High perinatal and neonatal mortality in rural India.

A prospective study conducted in rural India on pregnant women showed poor utilization of primary health services and very poor maternal care receptivity especially in terms of antenatal care. A very high perinatal mortality rate of 81.3/1000 live births and a neonatal mortality rate of 63.7/1000 live births was observed in the present study. Out of 204 live births, 72.05% of newborn developed complications within 6 weeks of the delivery. Most of the complications were of a minor nature and could be attributed to poor environmental conditions, lack of personal hygiene and ignorance. The study

Antenatal monitoring of the high risk fetus.

Fetus may be at high risk of perinatal mortality or morbidity or childhood morbidity either due to congenital malformations, genetically inherited disorders, chromosomal aberrations or due to antenatal and/or intrapartum hypoxia. Environmental hazards of infection, radiation and drug ingestion or maternal medical disorders are associated with some risk to the fetus. So it is important to identify those at risk by obtaining a detailed medical and family history. Maternal age and past obstetric history would also suggest the high risk nature of the pregnancy. A detailed clinical examination of t

Mortality pattern in the Emergency Paediatric Unit of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria.

Three hundred and seven (307) deaths were recorded out of 3,155 admissions into the Emergency Paediatric Unit of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria between January 1st and December 31st 1986, giving a percentage mortality of 9.9 percent. 67 percent of the patients who died were aged between one month and twenty four months, and the overall male: female ratio of deaths was 1:1.04. Measles with complications was the commonest cause of death (24.1 percent) closely followed by protein energy malnutrition (23 percent) and respiratory tract infection (18 percent). Over half of the patie

Perinatal mortality associated with intrauterine infection due to pseudomonads.

Pseudomonads are common causes of nosocomial infections but are rarely implicated in perinatal disease. In a retrospective autopsy study we found that 9% of all acute congenital bacterial infections were due to Pseudomonas species. Premature rupture of membranes occurred in half the cases and clinical maternal amnionitis in two-thirds. One case was apparently nosocomial in origin. No known risk factors were implicated in any other case. Seven infants were stillborn and two died within a few hours. Congenital pneumonia, funisitis, and chorioamnionitis were found at autopsy. Intrauterine infecti

Nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis.

Twenty cases of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis were reviewed. The incidence of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis was 1/2,029 (20 cases in 40,588 deliveries). The diverse etiologies of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis are demonstrated. The incidence of erythroblastosis fetalis caused by Rh isoimmunization declined markedly. The perinatal mortality rate was 14/18 or 78%. Prematurity, the presence of congenital anomalies, and the severity of hydrops fetalis contribute to this poor prognosis. However, a better understanding of the pathophysiology of hydrops fetalis, along with early detection by ultras

Diabetes and pregnancy in South Carolina: prevalence, perinatal mortality, and neonatal morbidity in 1978.

Through retrospective analysis of vital records and hospital discharge data, this study examines the prevalence of diabetes in pregnancy and diabetes-related perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity in South Carolina in 1978. Diabetes was observed in 5.9/1000 deliveries. Diabetic natality rates for whites and nonwhites were 5.1/1000 and 6.9/1000, respectively. In comparison with comprehensive screening programs, these rates suggest that more than half of all diabetic pregnancies in South Carolina are unrecognized. The overall diabetic perinatal mortality rate was 102 deaths/1000 deliveries,

Acute respiratory infection and associated factors among young children presenting to hospital in Sierra Leone.

OBJECTIVES: Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide, with a substantial burden in Sierra Leone. Although maternal, infant, and environmental factors influence ARI susceptibility, their role in disease severity remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted prospective surveillance of children aged <24 months admitted to Kenema Government Hospital from October 2020 to October 2021. Eligible children were enrolled within 48 hours of admission and had at least one acute respiratory symptom. Nose and throat swabs were collected and tested using
