Enhancing Relation Extraction for COVID-19 Vaccine Shot-Adverse Event Associations with Large Language Models.

OBJECTIVE: The rapid evolution of the COVID-19 virus has led to the development of different vaccine shots, each designed to combat specific variants and enhance overall efficacy. While vaccines have been crucial in controlling the spread of the virus, they can also cause adverse events (AEs). Understanding these relationships is vital for vaccine safety monitoring and surveillance. METHODS: In our study, we collected data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) and social media platforms (Twitter and Reddit) to extract relationships between COVID-19 vaccine shots and adverse

Enhanced security of affine ciphers using digraph transformation and a modified three pass protocol.

Ensuring secure data transmission over public channels remains a fundamental challenge in modern communication systems. Cryptography, through encryption and decryption processes, is vital for protecting sensitive information from unauthorized access. Various symmetric and asymmetric cryptographic algorithms are used for this purpose, including Caesar, Affine, Vigenère, Hill ciphers, DES, AES, elliptic curve cryptography, ElGamal, and RSA. Among them, the Affine cipher is a monoalphabetic substitution cipher designed to convert plaintext into unreadable ciphertext to prevent intrusion. Although

Using dynamic foodscape models to assess bottom-up constraints on population performance of herbivores.

Resource heterogeneity governs a multitude of ecological processes, but the mechanisms by which heterogeneity influences population performance are not fully resolved. Because optimizing behavior is challenging in heterogeneous landscapes, individual variation in foraging and movement strategies is common, and understanding the consequences of that variation is one of the most pressing challenges in modern ecology. In theory, such consequences should be modulated at least in part by nutrition, which directly influences discretionary energy available for growth and reproduction. We developed a

Improving Machine Learning Models of Late-onset Sepsis Prediction Using Optimized Control Group Selection: A Comparative Study.

Late-onset sepsis (LOS) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants due to their immature immune systems and the complex clinical environment of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Predictive models leveraging non-invasive vital sign data, such as heart rate variability (HRV), respiration and motion, have shown potential for early detection of LOS. However, the use of different control group selection strategies across LOS prediction studies, without any systematic comparison, has limited the potential to further improve the model performance. In this study, we evalu

Pressure-Wire Guided Hybrid Branch Pulmonary Artery Band Placement for Palliation of Single Ventricle and Critical Congenital Cardiac Lesions.

BACKGROUND: Historically, bilateral pulmonary artery band (PAB) placement was guided by pulmonary blood flow surrogates including systemic blood pressure (BP) and arterial saturation. These metrics alone may result in suboptimal bPAB placement. We perform a hybrid PAB (hPAB) procedure employing pressure-wire assessment to evaluate pulmonary hemodynamics and guide the procedure. METHODS: Single-center retrospective study of consecutive patients that underwent hybrid bPAB procedure between August 2015 and May 2022. Reduced EEG complexity in stable coronary artery disease: an evidence of covert brain dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence indicates that coronary heart disease (CHD) is frequently accompanied by cerebral injury. Non-linear electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis is an effective method for capturing abnormal EEG signal dynamics. This study characterized the complexity of EEG in CHD patients based on non-linear indices. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with CHD were enrolled, as well as an equal number of non-coronary controls. Five-minute, resting-state EEG recordings were obtained under standardized conditions. Non-linear dynamics were quantified using Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZC), per

A comparison of pixel intensity-based and object-based image analysis software algorithms for assessing immunohistochemical staining of sections from paraffin-embedded human tumor samples.

Histopathological diagnosis relies on careful and expert assessment of tissue as guided by multiple criteria relevant to specific immunohistochemical (IHC) markers. Computer-aided detection or diagnosis systems have recently been deployed to detect abnormalities in histological samples, transforming many areas of research and medicine such as pathology. These software packages can provide a helpful decision support tool for accelerating analysis, but they would need to capture information from the sample in a manner that facilitates the multicriteria assessment/interpretation demanded by the I

Large-scale automated phenotyping of cardiac arrest and withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy using electronic health record data.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Anoxic brain injury following cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States. Withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy (WLST) is a common end-of-life decision in these patients, but its contributing factors and outcomes remain poorly understood. We developed machine learning models to enable large-scale, automated phenotyping to identify patients who died following WLST. METHODS: We used structured and unstructured EHR (Electronic Health Record) data from two major hospitals to train models that identify (1) patients with cardiac arrest and coma, and (2) patie
