Assessing the efficacy of immunotherapy in lung squamous carcinoma using artificial intelligence neural network.

BACKGROUND: At present, immunotherapy is a very promising treatment method for lung cancer patients, while the factors affecting response are still controversial. It is crucial to predict the efficacy of lung squamous carcinoma patients who received immunotherapy. METHODS: In our retrospective study, we enrolled lung squamous carcinoma patients who received immunotherapy at Beijing Chest Hospital from January 2017 to November 2021. All patients were grouped into two cohorts randomly, the training cohort (80% of the total) and the test cohort (20% of the total). The training cohort was used to

Fast and Accurate Amyloid Brain PET Quantification Without MRI Using Deep Neural Networks.

This paper proposes a novel method for automatic quantification of amyloid PET using deep learning-based spatial normalization (SN) of PET images, which does not require MRI or CT images of the same patient. The accuracy of the method was evaluated for 3 different amyloid PET radiotracers compared with MRI-parcellation-based PET quantification using FreeSurfer. Methods: A deep neural network model used for the SN of amyloid PET images was trained using 994 multicenter amyloid PET images (367 18F-flutemetamol and 627 18F-florbetaben) and the corresponding 3-dimensional MR images of subjects who

Estimation of the Continuous Walking Angle of Knee and Ankle (Talocrural Joint, Subtalar Joint) of a Lower-Limb Exoskeleton Robot Using a Neural Network.

A lower-limb exoskeleton robot identifies the wearer's walking intention and assists the walking movement through mechanical force; thus, it is important to be able to identify the wearer's movement in real-time. Measurement of the angle of the knee and ankle can be difficult in the case of patients who cannot move the lower-limb joint properly. Therefore, in this study, the knee angle as well as the angles of the talocrural and subtalar joints of the ankle were estimated during walking by applying the neural network to two inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors attached to the thigh and shan

Optical coherence tomography-based deep-learning model for detecting central serous chorioretinopathy.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a common condition characterized by serous detachment of the neurosensory retina at the posterior pole. We built a deep learning system model to diagnose CSC, and distinguish chronic from acute CSC using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images. Data from SD-OCT images of patients with CSC and a control group were analyzed with a convolutional neural network. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) were used to evaluate the model. For CSC diagnosis, our model showed an a

Real-time and multimodality image-guided intelligent HIFU therapy for uterine fibroid.

Rationale: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy represents a noninvasive surgical approach to treat uterine fibroids. The operation of HIFU therapy relies on the information provided by medical images. In current HIFU therapy, all operations such as positioning of the lesion in magnetic resonance (MR) and ultrasound (US) images are manually performed by specifically trained doctors. Manual processing is an important limitation of the efficiency of HIFU therapy. In this paper, we aim to provide an automatic and accurate image guidance system, intelligent diagnosis, and treatment str

Comparing Deep Learning Models for Multi-cell Classification in Liquid- based Cervical Cytology Image.

Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a reliable automated technique for the screening of Papanicolaou (Pap) smear data. It is an effective technique for collecting a majority of the cervical cells and aiding cytopathologists in locating abnormal cells. Most methods published in the research literature rely on accurate cell segmentation as a prior, which remains challenging due to a variety of factors, e.g., stain consistency, presence of clustered cells, etc. We propose a method for automatic classification of cervical slide images through generation of labeled cervical patch data and extracting dee

Estimation of cerebral blood flow velocity during breath-hold challenge using artificial neural networks.

UNLABELLED: The effect of untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) on cerebral haemodynamics and CA impairment is an active field of research interest. A breath-hold challenge is usually used in clinical and research settings to simulate cardiovascular and cerebrovascular changes that mimic OSA events. This work utilises temporal arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals to estimate the temporal cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFv) waveform. Measurements of CBFv, SpO2, and PPG, were acquired concurrently from volunteers performing two different protocols of breath

Particulate Matter Exposure of Passengers at Bus Stations: A Review.

This review clarifies particulate matter (PM) pollution, including its levels, the factors affecting its distribution, and its health effects on passengers waiting at bus stations. The usual factors affecting the characteristics and composition of PM include industrial emissions and meteorological factors (temperature, humidity, wind speed, rain volume) as well as bus-station-related factors such as fuel combustion in vehicles, wear of vehicle components, cigarette smoking, and vehicle flow. Several studies have proven that bus stops can accumulate high PM levels, thereby elevating passengers'

Feature relevance in physiological networks for classification of obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVE: Physiological networks (PN) model couplings between organs in a high-dimensional parameter space. Machine learning methods, in particular artifical neural networks (ANNs), are powerful on high-dimensional classification tasks. However, lack of interpretability of the resulting models has been a drawback in research. We assess relevant PN topology changes in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by novel ANN interpretation techniques. APPROACH: ANNs are trained to classify OSA based on the PNs of 48 patients and 48 age and gender matched healthy controls. The PNs consisting of 2812 links ar

Artificial Neural Network to Predict Varicocele Impact on Male Fertility through Testicular Endocannabinoid Gene Expression Profiles.

The relationship between varicocele and fertility has always been a matter of debate because of the absence of predictive clinical indicators or molecular markers able to define the severity of this disease. Even though accumulated evidence demonstrated that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a central role in male reproductive biology, particularly in the testicular compartment, to date no data point to a role for ECS in the etiopathogenesis of varicocele. Therefore, the present research has been designed to investigate the relationship between testicular ECS gene expression and fertility

Identification of a Novel Clinical Phenotype of Severe Malaria using a Network-Based Clustering Approach.

The parasite Plasmodium falciparum is the main cause of severe malaria (SM). Despite treatment with antimalarial drugs, more than 400,000 deaths are reported every year, mainly in African children. The diversity of clinical presentations associated with SM highlights important differences in disease pathogenesis that often require specific therapeutic options. The clinical heterogeneity of SM is largely unresolved. Here we report a network-based analysis of clinical phenotypes associated with SM in 2,915 Gambian children admitted to hospital with Plasmodium falciparum malaria. We used a networ

Use of automated learning techniques for predicting mandibular morphology in skeletal class I, II and III.

BACKGROUND: The prediction of the mandibular bone morphology in facial reconstruction for forensic purposes is usually performed considering a straight profile corresponding to skeletal class I, with application of linear and parametric analysis which limit the search for relationships between mandibular and craniomaxillary variables. OBJECTIVE: To predict the mandibular morphology through craniomaxillary variables on lateral radiographs in patients with skeletal class I, II and III, using automated learning techniques, such as Artificial Neural Networks and Support Vector Regression. Implementation of a smartphone as a wireless gyroscope platform for quantifying reduced arm swing in hemiplegie gait with machine learning classification by multilayer perceptron neural network.

Natural gait consists of synchronous and rhythmic patterns for both the lower and upper limb. People with hemiplegia can experience reduced arm swing, which can negatively impact the quality of gait. Wearable and wireless sensors, such as through a smartphone, have demonstrated the ability to quantify various features of gait. With a software application the smartphone (iPhone) can function as a wireless gyroscope platform capable of conveying a gyroscope signal recording as an email attachment by wireless connectivity to the Internet. The gyroscope signal recordings of the affected hemiplegic

Neural network pattern recognition of lingual-palatal pressure for automated detection of swallow.

We describe a novel device and method for real-time measurement of lingual-palatal pressure and automatic identification of the oral transfer phase of deglutition. Clinical measurement of the oral transport phase of swallowing is a complicated process requiring either placement of obstructive sensors or sitting within a fluoroscope or articulograph for recording. Existing detection algorithms distinguish oral events with EMG, sound, and pressure signals from the head and neck, but are imprecise and frequently result in false detection. We placed seven pressure sensors on a molded mouthpiece fi

Comparison of QSAR models based on combinations of genetic algorithm, stepwise multiple linear regression, and artificial neural network methods to predict Kd of some derivatives of aromatic sulfonamides as carbonic anhydrase II inhibitors.

Four stepwise multiple linear regressions (SMLR) and a genetic algorithm (GA) based multiple linear regressions (MLR), together with artificial neural network (ANN) models, were applied for quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling of dissociation constants (Kd) of 62 arylsulfonamide (ArSA) derivatives as human carbonic anhydrase II (HCA II) inhibitors. The best subsets of molecular descriptors were selected by SMLR and GA-MLR methods. These selected variables were used to generate MLR and ANN models. The predictability power of models was examined by an external test set an

Health status, infection and disease in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) studied using a canine microarray platform and machine-learning approaches.

Conservation biologists face many challenges in assessing health, immune status and infectious diseases in protected species. These challenges include unpredictable sample populations, diverse genetic and environmental backgrounds of the animals, as well as the practical, legal and ethical issues involved in experimentation. The use of whole genome scale transcriptomics with animal samples obtained in a minimally invasive manner is an approach that shows promise for health assessment. In this study we assessed the utility of a microarray to identify changes in gene expression predictive of hea
