Comparison of the choroidal structural components and choroidal vascularity index between patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and healthy controls.

AIM: To compare the choroidal structural components and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) between patients with obstructive sleep apnea synd … es of LA, SA, and TCA between the groups (p>0.05). No significant correlation was found between the polysomnography test results and the choroidal measurements (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: In our study, CVI was found to be lower in patients with OSAS than in the healthy controls. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required to evaluate the role of CVI in OSAS.

Limbic hypoconnectivity in idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder with impulse control disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Current neuroimaging research has revealed several brain alterations in idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD) that mirror and precede those reported in PD. However, none have specifically addressed the presence of changes across the reward system, and their role in the emergence of impulse control disorders (ICDs). We aimed to compare the volumetric and functional connectivity characteristics of the reward system in relation to the psychobehavioral profile of patients with iRBD versus healthy controls and PD patients. METHODS: Twenty patients with polysomnography confir…

Genetic and demographic predisposing factors associated with pediatric sleepwalking in the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Sleepwalking is a parasomnia associated with non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and is formally diagnosed using polysomnography (PSG). However, PSG are difficult to perform on children or adolescents due to needed compliance. To understand this condition in youth, few studies have been conducted on a large cohort of youths with a diverse distribution of ages and races to characterize it better in the absence of PSG. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of sleepwalking in youth, as well as associated demographic and genetic characteristics, using questionnaires in a l…

The Influence of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease on Daytime Sleepiness and Depressive Symptom in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: As there is insufficient evidence for a relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), we investigated whether OSA diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG) is related to GERD. METHODS: A total of 402 subjects was evaluated. Overnight PSG was performed and a few questionnaires on GERD, anxiety, depression, and daytime sleepiness were administered. An apnea-hypopnea index < 5 was the classification criterion for subjects without OSA. Subjects with heartburn or acid regurgitation at least once a week were classified as having GERD. RESU…

Is there any relation between arterial stiffness and insomnia? A challenging question.

PURPOSE: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder which has high comorbidity with a number of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). As a possible risk factor for the CVDs, arterial stiffness may be assessed non-invasively by pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AI). The aim of this study was to evaluate any relation between insomnia and arterial stiffness. METHODS: Patients with insomnia were included in the study after the exclusion of other sleep disorders by polysomnography. Sleep quality and the degree of insomnia symptoms were evaluated by the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and i…

Changes during medical treatments before adenotonsillectomy in children with obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVES: The severity of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can vary from mild to very severe (AHI ≥ 30 events/h) with the seasons. The efficacy of medical treatment has been investigated in cases of mild and moderate pediatric OSA, but not in severe cases thoroughly. METHODS: Our prospective cohort study involved 205 children who visited our outpatient clinic between December 2014 and May 2020. We performed home sleep tests after the initial visit, and then polysomnography after optimizing the control of rhinitis, sinusitis, adenoid hypertrophy, and tonsillitis by using medical treat…

Sleep stage dynamics in young patients with sleep bruxism.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that sleep stage dynamics are different in patients with sleep bruxism (SB) and that these changes are associated with the occurrence of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA). METHODS: Fifteen healthy controls and 15 patients with SB underwent overnight polysomnography. Sleep variables and survival curves of continuous runs of each sleep stage were compared between the groups. Stage transition dynamics and the probability of stage fragmentation were analyzed for three epochs before and after the epoch with RMMA. Survival curves of continuous runs of eac…
