Innovative application of a traffic-prediction spatio-temporal graph convolutional network for dengue disease forecasting.

Dengue fever, a vector-borne disease, is a major public health challenge. Accurate prediction methods that can better reflect the complexity of the outbreak are essential for dengue prediction and vector control. In this study, we introduce an adapted Spatio-Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (STGCN), originally developed for traffic forecasting, to predict weekly dengue cases in nine countries in South and Central America from 2014 to 2022. In this approach, we use environmental and socio-economic data in addition to climate data and historical dengue case information to capture complex tra

Duplex ultrasonography predicts safety of radial artery harvest in the presence of an abnormal Allen test.

BACKGROUND: The Allen test is commonly used to assess collateral hand circulation before radial artery harvest for coronary artery bypass grafting. However there is no consensus as to whether an abnormal Allen test is an absolute or relative contraindication to radial artery harvesting. We assessed the safety of harvesting the radial artery using arterial duplex ultrasonography in patients with an abnormal Allen test. METHODS: Two hundred and eighty-seven consecutive patients scheduled for total arterial coronary revascularisation underwent preoperative Allen tests over a 34-month period. Pat

Building Dual AI Models and Nomograms Using Noninvasive Parameters for Aiding Male Bladder Outlet Obstruction Diagnosis and Minimizing the Need for Invasive Video-Urodynamic Studies: Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing underlying causes of nonneurogenic male lower urinary tract symptoms associated with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) is challenging. Video-urodynamic studies (VUDS) and pressure-flow studies (PFS) are both invasive diagnostic methods for BOO. VUDS can more precisely differentiate etiologies of male BOO, such as benign prostatic obstruction, primary bladder neck obstruction, and dysfunctional voiding, potentially outperforming PFS. OBJECTIVE: These examinations' invasive nature highlights the need for developing noninvasive predictive models to facilitate BOO diagnosis

Diagnosis Algorithm of Cardiac Sarcoidosis: Where Are We?

This commentary discusses the recently published article, "Speckle-tracking echocardiography as an effective screening tool for cardiac involvement among patients with systemic sarcoidosis in an Indian cohort: A prospective observational study". Owing to improved imaging modalities and increased awareness of cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), the prevalence of CS has risen. Given that CS is a relatively rare condition with high mortality, it is essential for the initial test to demonstrate high sensitivity. However, several guidelines offer differing opinions on the diagnosis algorithm for CS. This com

Predicting Long-Term Prognosis of Poststroke Dysphagia with Machine Learning.

Background: Poststroke dysphagia is a common condition that can lead to complications such as aspiration pneumonia and malnutrition, significantly affecting the quality of life. Most patients recover their swallowing function spontaneously, but in others difficulties persist beyond six months. Can we predict this in advance? On the other hand, there have been recent attempts to use machine learning to predict disease prognosis. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether machine learning can predict the long-term prognosis for poststroke dysphagia using early videofluoroscopic swallowing

Is it possible to identify cases of coronary artery bypass graft postoperative surgical site infection accurately from claims data?

BACKGROUND: Claims data has usually been used in recent studies to identify cases of healthcare-associated infection. However, several studies have indicated that the ICD-9-CM codes might be inappropriate for identifying such cases from claims data; therefore, several researchers developed alternative identification models to correctly identify more cases from claims data. The purpose of this study was to investigate three common approaches to develop alternative models for the identification of cases of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgical site infection, and to compare the performanc

Deep learning applied to standard radiographs improves detection of implant loosening in total knee arthroplasty: A proof-of-concept study.

PURPOSE: Implant loosening is a common cause of failure in total knee arthroplasty, and for appropriate treatment, the correct diagnosis is of vital importance. Detection is challenging as radiographs only reveal obvious cases, computed tomography (CT) scans are hindered by metal artifacts, and bone scintigraphy lacks specificity, while all methods are time-consuming and/or involve radiation exposure. This proof-of-concept study aimed to develop a deep learning (DL) tool to detect implant loosening using a set of two-dimensional (2D) radiographs. METHODS: A total of 307 radiograph sets (anter
