A case study on postoperative radiation therapy of the big toe.

Sweat gland cancers, particularly eccrine sweat gland carcinomas, are rare and challenging to treat due to their aggressive nature and inconspicuous clinical presentation. Aggressive digital papillary adenocarcinoma, a rare subtype, frequently presents with delays in diagnosis, increasing the risk of metastasis and recurrence. Surgical excision remains the standard treatment, but the role of postoperative radiation therapy is not well-established due to the paucity of data. This case study explores the use of radiotherapy in treating a 50-year-old female with digital papillary adenocarcinoma o

Curcumin and vitamin D3 release from calcium phosphate enhances bone regeneration.

Improving early in vivo osseointegration and removing residual cancer cells after tumor removal requires the development of novel bone implants with osteogenic and anti-cancer properties. Here, curcumin and vitamin D3 (Cur/VitD3) are loaded into calcium phosphate (CaP) matrices to improve in vivo osteogenesis and inhibit the proliferation of human osteosarcoma cells. Patient-specific, 3D-printed tricalcium phosphate (TCP) loaded with Cur/VitD3 increases the viability of in vitro osteoblast cells after 11 days. When delivered in combination, Cur/VitD3 loaded hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated Ti64 impl

Comparison of patient-specific implants with standard plates after 3-D-planned corrective osteotomy for distal radial malunions.

We compared 3-D-printed patient-specific implants (PSIs) with standard palmar locking plates for radiological accuracy after extra-articular corrective osteotomy for malunited distal radial fractures. Eleven patients were operated on with a PSI. Additionally, a plastic printed model of each patient was operated on with a standard plate in vitro. Three months postoperatively, radial alignment in patients and models was compared with the preoperative ideal planning using CT scans. Patients with PSIs showed smaller rotational deviations (median 7°) compared with standard plate models (9°). Deviat

Evaluation Strategies for Tissue-engineered Tracheas: From In Vitro Characterization to In Vivo Assessment.

The trachea plays a critical role in maintaining airway patency, ventilation, and mucociliary clearance, supported by its unique anatomical and structural features. Tracheal defects resulting from congenital anomalies, malignancies, trauma, or prolonged intubation present significant clinical challenges. Traditional reconstruction methods, such as end-to-end anastomosis and patch grafts, are often limited by technical feasibility and suboptimal outcomes. Recently, tissue-engineered tracheal scaffolds (TETs), particularly those fabricated using 3D bioprinting technologies, have emerged as promi…

Orthogonal Agent Comprising a Nitrile N-Oxide and a Phenylcarbamate for Facile Molecular Integration on Styrne-Butadiene Resin.

The covalent attachment of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGylation) to materials minimizes non-specific fouling of the material surface with bioco … tron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurements. Because SB resin is frequently used as a 3D-printing polymer, the present study indicates that the orthogonal agent can be applicable to the surface modification of 3D-printed objects precisely manufactured by using a computer-aided design (CAD) file in the future.

Artificial intelligence-assisted blockchain-based framework for smart and secure EMR management.

Healthcare professionals, patients, and other stakeholders have been storing medical prescriptions and other relevant reports electronically. These reports contain the personal information of the patients, which is sensitive data. Therefore, there exists a need to store these records in a decentralized model (using IPFS and Ethereum decentralized application) to provide data and identity protection. Many patients recurrently visit doctors and undergo treatments while receiving different prescriptions and reports. In case of an emergency, the doctors and attendants may need and benefit from the

Internal podalic version of second twin: Improving feet identification using a simulation model.

BACKGROUND: Podalic version and breech extraction require high obstetrical expertise. Identifying fetal extremities is the first crucial step for trainees. When this skill is not polished enough, it increases the inter-twin delivery interval and can even jeopardize the whole manoeuver. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a model for simulating and training this specific skill, with obstetrical mannequin, and 3D printed hands and feet. Five feet and five hands (five rights and five lefts of each one) were printed in 3D after initial ultrasound acquisition of a near term fetus. Each foot and hand,

Heart and Lung Sound Measurement Using an Esophageal Stethoscope with Adaptive Noise Cancellation.

In surgeries where general anesthesia is required, the auscultation of heart and lung sounds is essential to provide information on the patient's cardiorespiratory system. Heart and lung sounds can be recorded using an esophageal stethoscope; however, there is huge background noise when this device is used in an operating room. In this study, a digital esophageal stethoscope system was designed. A 3D-printed case filled with Polydimethylsiloxane material was designed to hold two electret-type microphones. One of the microphones was placed inside the printed case to collect the heart and lung s

Adaptation to life in aeolian sand: how the sandfish lizard, Scincus scincus, prevents sand particles from entering its lungs.

The sandfish lizard, Scincus scincus (Squamata: Scincidae), spends nearly its whole life in aeolian sand and only comes to the surface for foraging, defecating and mating. It is not yet understood how the animal can respire without sand particles entering its respiratory organs when buried under thick layers of sand. In this work, we integrated biological studies, computational calculations and physical experiments to understand this phenomenon. We present a 3D model of the upper respiratory system based on a detailed histological analysis. A 3D-printed version of this model was used in combin

Electronic fingerprinting of the dead.

To date, a number of methods exist for the capture of fingerprints from cadavers that can then be used in isolation as a primary method for the identification of the dead. We report the use of a handheld, mobile wireless unit used in conjunction with a personal digital assistant (PDA) device for the capture of fingerprints from the dead. We also consider a handheld single-digit fingerprint scanner that utilises a USB laptop connection for the electronic capture of cadaveric fingerprints. Both are single-operator units that, if ridge detail is preserved, can collect a 10-set of finger pad print

Chromosome 6p influences on different dyslexia-related cognitive processes: further confirmation.

In this study, which is a continuation and an extension of an earlier study, we enrolled two new families (N=31) and recruited more individuals from the previously ascertained families (N=56). The eight multiplex families (N=171) presented in this study were ascertained from a sample of adult probands whose childhood reading history is well documented through archival information. Six phenotypes were constructed to span a range of dyslexia-related cognitive processes. These phenotypes were (1) phonemic awareness (of spoken words); (2) phonological decoding (of printed nonwords); (3) rapid auto

A Novel Non-Planar Bioprinting Methodology for Enhanced Surface Fidelity of the Cornea.

Traditional 3D bioprinting of corneal constructs relies on planar slicing, which often results in a significant stairstep effect and the loss of anatomical curvature. Curvilinear layering has emerged as a promising alternative to address these limitations. The presented methodology, based on non-planar layer integration, ensures a smoother surface finish. The model's surface is identified via vertex normals and reconstructed using the Poisson method. Finally, surface parametrization is applied to generate spatially curved trajectories. To validate the algorithm, corneal constructs were printed…

A 3D printable tissue adhesive.

Tissue adhesives are promising alternatives to sutures and staples for joining tissues, sealing defects, and immobilizing devices. However, existing adhesives mostly take the forms of glues or hydrogels, which offer limited versatility. We report a direct-ink-write 3D printable tissue adhesive which can be used to fabricate bioadhesive patches and devices with programmable architectures, unlocking new potential for application-specific designs. The adhesive is conformable and stretchable, achieves robust adhesion with wet tissues within seconds, and exhibits favorable biocompatibility. In vivo
