Understanding the relationship between GP training and improved patient care - a qualitative study of GP educators.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has highlighted the benefits of receiving care in a postgraduate GP training practice including improved patient satisfaction, more appropriate secondary care usage, cancer diagnosis, and antibiotic prescribing. Whilst the influence of being registered in a postgraduate GP training practice on patient outcomes is modest relative to other factors such as deprivation, disease burden, demography, and ethnicity, the reasons for this benefit is not clear. AIM: This study explores how GP trainers perceive engagement with clinical education influences patient care. M

Metformin's impact on statin-associated muscle symptoms: An analysis of ACCORD study data and research materials from the NHLBI Biologic Specimen and Data Repository Information Coordinating Center.

Statins are widely prescribed, yet statin muscle pain limits their use, leading to increased cardiovascular risk. No validated therapy for statin muscle pain exists. The goal of the study was to assess whether metformin was associated with reduced muscle pain. A secondary analysis of data from the ACCORD trial was performed. An ACCORD sub-study assessed patients for muscle cramps and leg/calve pain while walking, typical non-severe statin muscle pain symptoms. We compared muscle pain between patients using a statin (n = 445) or both a statin and metformin (n = 869) at baseline. Overall patient

Predictive factors influencing pregnancy rates after intrauterine insemination with frozen donor semen: a prospective cohort study.

The extent to which certain parameters can influence pregnancy rates after intrauterine insemination with frozen donor semen was examined prospectively. Between July 2011 and September 2015, 402 women received 1264 IUI cycles with frozen donor semen in a tertiary referral infertility centre. A case report form was used to collect data prospectively. The primary outcome measure was clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), confirmed by detection of a gestational sac and fetal heartbeat using ultrasonography at 7-8 weeks of gestation. Statistical analysis was carried out using generalized estimating equati

Triage for management of cervical high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion patients with positive margin by conization: a retrospective analysis.

The objective of this study is to guide a triage for the management of cervical high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) patients with positive margin by conization. Clinico-pathological data of HSIL patients with positive margin by conization were retrospectively collected from January 2009 to December 2014. All patients underwent secondary conization or hysterectomy within 6 months. The rate of residual lesion was calculated, and the factors associated with residual lesion were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analyses. Among a total of 119 patients, 56 (47.06%) patients pres

Serial analysis of gene expression in methamphetamine- and phencyclidine-treated rodent cerebral cortices: are there common mechanisms?

Pharmacological actions of methamphetamine (METH) and phencyclidine (PCP) are different, but both of them can induce similar psychiatric disorders including abuse, intoxication, withdrawal, and psychotic symptoms like those of schizophrenia. These mental disorders are caused not only by their direct pharmacological effects, but also by secondary brain damage containing gene expression changes. In order to broadly grasp these alterations, we used serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE), a transcriptome analysis. We analyzed three cDNA libraries from cerebral cortices of saline (1 mL/kg)-, MET

Multimodal response-predictor analysis for three non-invasive brain stimulation protocols.

Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) methods such as paired associative stimulation (PAS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) are used to modulate cortical excitability and reduce symptoms in a variety of psychiatric disorders. Recent studies have shown significant inter-individual variability in the physiological response to these techniques when they are applied over the hand representation of primary motor cortex (M1hand). The goal of the present study was to identify neurophysiological, neuroanatomical, and neurochemical
