Microaggressions in our daily workplace encounters: a barrier to achieving diversity and inclusion.

Originally coined in 1970 by Dr. Chester Pierce, the term "microaggression" encompasses any subtle insult or informal degradation of a member of any socially marginalized group. While incidents of blatant racism and sexism might be deterred by zero-tolerance policies in the workforce, microaggressions still plague our daily interactions with colleagues and patients alike. In this paper we define and categorize microaggressions using real-world examples, describe their repercussions and provide ways to appropriately respond to microaggressions on a personal and institutional level.

Closing in on 'perhaps the most dreadful of the remaining plagues': an independent view of the multidisciplinary alliance to optimize schistosomiasis control in Africa.

The 4-year (2006-2010) alliance to optimize schistosomiasis control and transmission surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa (CONTRAST), funded by the European Commission, stands out as a 'game-changer' by successfully harnessing and combining new as well as previously available capabilities for schistosomiasis control in selected African countries. By establishing an African research network and promoting an interactive agenda that operates simultaneously at the molecular, biological, spatial and social levels, a navigable avenue for validation and application of tools complementary to preventive

[The importance of early traumatic experiences for the development of the infant's brain].

Learning and social and emotional experiences have an impact on gene activity, and modify the growth and function of nerve cells. As a result, and depending on the interactive experiences within relationships, motoric, cognitive and emotional skills, as well as behavior of the infant are influenced. If the child fails to experience a dependable relationship, the symptoms of mental disturbance often develop (e.g. ADHD, among others). Further factors that impact on brain development and lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are deprivation, physical violence and sexual abuse in early chil

Consequences of severe epilepsy: psychosocial aspects.

Patients with severe epilepsy very often present a diversity of problems which interact with each other and with factors in the environment in subtle ways. Intellectual and social shortcomings as well as anxiety-related emotional problems are among the most common primary and secondary consequences seen in this patient group. Anxiety among the relatives, ignorance and prejudice in the general population often add to the patients' burdens. When seen from a developmental neuropsychological and psychological point of view the importance of early treatment must be stressed.

Epidermolysis bullosa, three cases in an African family--medical, social and economic problems in management in a developing country.

Epidermolysis bullosa is one of the mechanobullous diseases with skin lesions in response to minor traumata. Despite its low incidence, it presents many problems relating to management in a developing country as in Africa, such as the provision of supportive care within the large (usually poor) families typical in these countries. There are problems with education, choice of vocation, prospect in marriage and other social interactions. Health education is at the lowest form of development and the government's provision of health care is limited in scope. Three cases in a family of nine are pre…

The concept of dependence.

The concept of dependence is reviewed in Western and Asian contexts. Asians find it acceptable and necessary, whereas Westerners may adopt an ambivalent attitude or reject the issue. Homeostatic dependence or reliance upon social and physicochemical environment is vital for human development and adaptation. Dependence as a phenomenon can be an interactional state, a trait, a role, and an initiator of mental mechanisms. Imbalanced processes result in pathological dependencies or disorders. An understanding of aspects of dependence has therapeutic implications in the assessment of the patient an

Motivational conflicts in Rett syndrome.

Some of the peculiar symptoms of Rett syndrome including stereotypic wringing and washing hand movements, staring, social withdrawal, bouts of hyperpnea, are interpreted as the expression of motivational conflicts occurring in severely brain damaged patients unable to perform useful hand movements. These behaviours can be considerably reduced, if external 'requests' are substantially diminished and sources of keen interest (stories, music, face to face interactions) are activated. These preliminary observations were derived from 34 patients seen by the author.

Evolutionary and social aspects of disease.

There are important interactions between disease and organic evolution, between disease and cultural evolution, and between all three. Social behaviour influences disease and is influenced by it. Disease and disease mortality are woven into the complex of behavioural and physiological reactions to the stresses of overpopulation, which act to reduce population size. These principles are illustrated with reference to a number of diseases, including vitamin D imbalance, phenylketonuria, lactose intolerance, malaria, sickle cell anaemia, favism, plague, yellow fever, syphilis, ergot poisoning, kur

Ertugliflozin improves animal behaviours associated with oxidative stress and inflammation in a BTBR T + Itpr3tf/J mouse model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition typified by difficulties in social interactions, repetitive and restricted behaviour and heightened anxiety. Increasing evidence suggests that oxidative stress and neuroinflammatory processes are crucial in the development of these behavioural abnormalities. Ertugliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor approved by the FDA for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus, has also been reported to exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. BTBR T + Itpr3tf/J (BTBR) mice are widely used as a preclinical model of autism spectrum d…

Context Matters: Hyperscanning the N400 Lexical Frequency Effect during Scripted Conversation and Passive Listening.

ERP studies of lexical processing typically involve individuals perceiving isolated words or sentences. However, much of language processing … ipted conversation condition may reflect differences in lexical processing in the context of active social interaction compared with passive comprehension. Specifically, the rapport created by engaging in a conversation with another person may facilitate lexical access and reduce the greater processing associated with low-frequency words. These findings demonstrate …

Bio-inspired cognitive robotics vs. embodied AI for socially acceptable, civilized robots.

Although cognitive robotics is still a work in progress, the trend is to "free" robots from the assembly lines of the third industrial revol … a cognitive architecture based on bio-inspired embodied cognition, educated through development and social interaction. In contrast, the problem with current AI foundation models applied to robotics (EAI) is that, although they can be super-intelligent, they are intrinsically disembodied and ethically agnostic, independent of how much information was absorbed during …

Early life stress modulates behavioral sensitivity to alcohol and promotes escalation of alcohol drinking.

Adverse childhood experiences significantly increase the risk of developing alcohol use disorder (AUD) in adulthood. We used a model of combined limited bedding/nesting and maternal separation (LBN+MS) in C57BL/6J background mice to investigate how early life stress (ELS) modulates behavioral sensitivity to alcohol, long-term alcohol drinking patterns, and the effects of alcohol on social behaviors. Our findings reveal that ELS increased sensitivity to the stimulatory locomotor effects of alcohol (1.75 g/kg) selectively in females and reduced sensitivity to the sedative effects of alcohol (4.0

Investigating Associations Between General and Disorder-Specific Reward and Suicidality in Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Altered reward processing is proposed to be central to the pathology of anorexia nervosa (AN). This study aimed to investigate how aspects of reward dysfunction relate to suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STBs) in AN. METHOD: We compared responses on self-report measures of general (i.e., anticipatory, consummatory, and social reward) and disorder-specific (i.e., self-starvation reward) reward between individuals with AN with (AN + STBs; n = 28) or without (AN; n = 31) lifetime active STBs and healthy controls (HC; n = 32). Further, we examined whether interactions between general

Parental Voices on Virtual Reality in Pediatric Oncology: Experiences, Needs, and Pathways for Co-Design.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric cancer treatments significantly affect children's physical, emotional, and social well-being. Virtual reality (VR) is emerging as a promising non-pharmacological tool to enhance quality of life during hospitalization, yet little is known about parents perceive its potential role in supportive care. METHODS: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with five parents of children in remission from cancer. It explored their experiences during chemotherapy and their perspectives on how VR could help support children and families during treatment. RESULTS: Par

Knockdown of the Non-canonical Wnt Gene Prickle2 Leads to Cerebellar Purkinje Cell Abnormalities While Cerebellar-Mediated Behaviors Remain Intact.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) involve brain wide abnormalities that contribute to a constellation of symptoms including behavioral inflexibility, cognitive dysfunction, learning impairments, altered social interactions, and perceptive time difficulties. Although a single genetic variation does not cause ASD, genetic variations such as one involving a non-canonical Wnt signaling gene, Prickle2, has been found in individuals with ASD. Previous work looking into phenotypes of Prickle2 knock-out (Prickle2-/-) and heterozygous mice (Prickle2-/+) suggest patterns of behavior similar to individuals…

The intersectional social patterning of early-COVID-era digital intimacies among transgender and gender-diverse young adults: effects on peri-pandemic sexual decision-making.

Interactive communications technologies facilitate identity formation and socio-sexual connection among transgender and gender-diverse young people. However, within their communities, variations in technology use along ethno-racial, sexual and gendered lines, and as facilitators of sexual resilience during the early COVID-19 pandemic, remain under-studied. Among N = 230 transgender and gender-diverse young adults, surveyed between October 2020 and September 2021, latent class analyses characterised participants by preferred functional affordances, such as finding dates, sex and friends (Model

Stepping into emotions: investigating the effect of angry and fearful faces on forward stepping and quiet stance.

INTRODUCTION: Facial expressions conveying an emotion may affect social interactions, such as approach- or avoidance-related behaviors. A specific facial feature is the gaze direction. An emotional facial expression such as anger will elicit distinct behavioral tendencies, depending on whether the angry gaze is directed toward the onlooker, or in a different direction. We tested whether facial expressions of anger and fear, combined with direct or averted gaze, elicit approach- or avoidance tendencies, using a go/no-go variant of the whole-body stepping task. METHOD: Healthy adults stood on a…

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex as a Social Determinant of Health, Alongside Its Psychiatric Comorbidities: A Case Report.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurocutaneous disease that manifests across multiple body systems. While there are substantial guidelines and protocols for managing the physical presentation of the disease, managing the psychosocial factors and the adverse effects as a social determinant of health is complex and unclear. This study discusses a patient with TSC who was hospitalized for pneumonia and how both her psychiatric and somatic symptoms were managed. Here we present the case of a 38-year-old Caucasian female with shortness of breath and generalized weakness. She had a past medica

Cadmium Exposure Is Associated with Behavioral Deficits and Neuroimmune Dysfunction in BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J Mice.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurobehavioral disabilities characterized by impaired social interactions, poor communication skills, and restrictive/repetitive behaviors. Cadmium is a common heavy metal implicated in ASD. In this study, we investigated the effects of Cd exposure on BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J (BTBR) mice, an ASD model. We looked for changes in repetitive behaviors and sociability through experiments. We also explored the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of Cd exposure, focusing on proinflammatory cytokines and pathways. Flow cytometry measured IL-17A-, IL-17F-, IL-21-, …

Acceptance of communication technology, emotional support and subjective well-being for Chinese older adults living alone during COVID-19: A moderated mediation model.

Stringent social distancing measures implemented to control the spread of COVID-19 affected older adults living alone by limiting their social interaction beyond their households. During these restrictions, interactions beyond the household could be facilitated by communication technology (CT) such as voice calls, instant messages. Our study provides evidence on how CT acceptance could influence the emotional support and in turn, subjective well-being (SWB) of older adults living alone. We did a cross-sectional survey with 293 community-dwelling Chinese older adults. Participants were surveyed…
