Factors Predicting Internalized Stigma Among Men Who Have Sex with Men Living with HIV in Beijing, China.

Internalized stigma in people living with HIV is associated with negative outcomes including sexual risk behaviors and depression. Little research has focused on internalized stigma in men who have sex with men living with HIV (MSMLWH) in China. We measured internalized stigma and examined its potential predictors in a sample of 277 MSMLWH from two infectious disease specialist hospitals in Beijing, China. Descriptive analysis showed an intermediate high level of internalized stigma in these men. Multiple linear regression revealed that higher levels of stereotypes, negative affect, older age,

The relationships between HIV stigma, emotional status, and emotional regulation among HIV-affected children in rural China.

Children affected by HIV/AIDS have unique psychosocial needs that often go unaddressed in traditional treatment approaches. They are more likely than unaffected peers to encounter stigma, including overt discriminatory behaviors, as well as stereotyped attitudes. In addition, HIV-affected children are at risk for experiencing negative affect, including sadness and depression. Previous studies have identified a link between HIV stigma and the subsequent emotional status of children affected by HIV/AIDS. However, limited data are available regarding protective psychological factors that can miti

Housing and Support Services with Homeless Mothers: Benefits to the Mother and Her Children.

This study reports the mental health outcomes of a small randomized clinical trial (n = 60) that compared housing and supportive services (Ecologically-Based Treatment, EBT) to community based housing and support services (treatment as usual, TAU). Mothers receiving EBT, but not those receiving TAU, reported reductions in their children's behavioral health problems. Reductions in mothers' mental health problems and intimate partner violence were observed in both TAU and EBT. The current findings provide evidence supporting the efficacy of independent housing and integrated support services. Gi

Peer influences on adolescent alcohol and other drug use outcomes.

PURPOSE: To examine the role of family environment and peer networks in abstinence outcomes for adolescents 1 year after intake to alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment. DESIGN: Survey of 419 adolescents 13 to 18 years of age at consecutive intakes to AOD treatment programs at four sites of a large health system, with telephone follow-up survey 1 year after intake. METHODS: Examined association of 1-year abstinence with baseline characteristics. Using logistic regression, we examined characteristics predicting 1-year abstinence and predicting having fewer than four substance-using friends a

Being differently the same: the mediation of identity tensions in the sharing of illness experiences.

The sharing of experiences between patients has become increasingly privileged as a source of knowledge and support in contemporary healthcare. Despite this, relatively little is known about the processes whereby people's experiences become, or fail to become, valued as sources of health-related knowledge in different contexts. Through a secondary analysis of 87 interviews conducted between 2006 and 2008 in the UK with people affected by motor neurone disease (46 interviews) and Parkinson's disease (41 interviews), we explore the identity work involved in turning other people's experiences int

Staying safe from hepatitis C: engaging with multiple priorities.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant global public health problem. In developed countries, 90% of new infections occur among people who inject drugs (PWID), with seroprevalence increasing rapidly among new injectors. Staying Safe is an international, qualitative, social research project, the aim of which is to draw on the experiences of long-term PWID to inform a new generation of HCV prevention strategies. The Sydney project team employed life history interviews and computer-generated timelines to elicit detailed data about unexposed participants' (n =13) injecting practices, ci

Psychosocial outcomes in children with hemifacial microsomia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether children with hemifacial microsomia (HFM) have higher risk for psychosocial problems than children without HFM. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-six children with HFM (64% male, mean age = 6.9 years) were compared to 568 matched controls (50% male, mean age = 7.0 years) on parent and teacher measures of behavior problems and social competence, and teacher rankings of peer acceptance. RESULTS: Parents of cases and controls reported similar levels of behavior problems and social competence. Teachers reported higher frequencies of internalizing problems, lower soc

Unprotected sex of homeless women living in Los Angeles county: an investigation of the multiple levels of risk.

This research uses multi-level modeling to investigate the context of unprotected sex of homeless women. Based on interviews with 429 randomly selected women living in temporary shelter settings in Los Angeles, this project investigates multiple levels of influence on unprotected sex with particular partners. Previous studies have investigated condom use of homeless women primarily at the individual level. This project investigates unprotected sex at the level of the partnership, the individual woman, and her social network. Homeless women who believe in the efficacy of condoms to prevent HIV

OBJECTIVE: Based on social ecological theory, this study examined the joint relations among adolescents' family, peer, and school contexts and depressive symptoms in youth with spina bifida using cumulative, protective, and specific effects models. METHOD: Sixty families of adolescents with spina bifida and 65 comparison families reported on adolescents' positive experiences within these contexts and on depressive symptoms when youth were 14-15 and 16-17 years old. RESULTS: Adolescents with spina bifida had fewer total positive contexts and less positive experience within peer and school con

Outcomes from the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH) program for bereaved caregivers.

Although preventive efforts for bereaved individuals have not been shown to be particularly effective in past studies, it has been suggested that intervention effects might be underestimated due to methodological issues such as short follow-up assessments. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the efficacy (as whole intervention packages and as component parts) of the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH) interventions in preventing complicated grief, normal grief, and depressive symptoms at a longer term follow-up assessment among bereaved caregivers (N = 224). Sexual network position and risk of sexually transmitted infections.

OBJECTIVES: A population-based sexual network study was used to identify sexual network structures associated with sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk, and to evaluate the degree to which the use of network-level data furthers the understanding of STI risk. METHODS: Participants (n = 655) were from the baseline and 12-month follow-up waves of a 2001-2 population-based longitudinal study of sexual networks among urban African-American adolescents. Sexual network position was characterised as the interaction between degree (number of partners) and two-reach centrality (number of partners'

Recent developments in understanding the psychosocial aspects of depression.

Recent advances in the psychosocial understanding of depression have elaborated an already complex aetiological model. Yet each new strand seems to echo, and forge links with, themes uncovered earlier, making it easier to see what is common about the 'final common pathway' to onset. For example, although recent stressors have for some time been recognised predictors of onset, new insights about the origins of these stressors have overlapped with other new work on depression and childhood adversity to identify a group who 'produce' their own severe life events in response to early negative expe

Positive behavioral support of adults with developmental disabilities: assessment of long-term adjustment and habilitation following restrictive treatment histories.

The long-term maintenance of behavioral treatment effects is an important measure of clinical significance but is not reported with regularity in the published literature. The present report concerned therapeutic maintenance by evaluating five adults with developmental disabilities who had been exposed to multiple, restrictive procedures (food deprivation, mechanical restraint, electric shock) in a prior residential treatment facility and were transitioned to a new habilitation setting where these procedures were terminated in favor of alternative methods of behavior support. As revealed throu

Coping with chronic illness: a qualitative study of coping with postpolio syndrome.

The study describes how 24 people with postpolio syndrome (PPS) cope with their problems. Two qualitative interviews were conducted, 6 weeks apart. The interviews were analysed inductively. It was found that the participants experienced many types of illness-related problems in their everyday lives. Furthermore, they describe the progressive deterioration in terms of a general weakness, fatigue and pain--these adding to the emotional stress. A variety of coping strategies are employed and the result of the analysis shows it to be impossible to carry out a clearly differentiated grouping into p

Workplace drinking climate, stress, and problem indicators: assessing the influence of teamwork (group cohesion).

OBJECTIVE: While job-related alcohol use may be associated with problems for drinkers, less is known about the effects of employee drinking on co-workers. We hypothesized that either exposure to co-worker drinking or the presence of a drinking climate would positively correlate with reports of stress and other problems. Following previous research, we also predicted that work group cohesion (or team orientation) would buffer against such problems. METHOD: Two random samples of municipal employees (Ns = 909 and 1,068) completed anonymous surveys. These assessed individual drinking, co-worker d

Engaging and retaining women in outpatient alcohol and other drug treatment: the effect of referral intensity.

Women with alcohol or other drug (AOD) problems experience a range of barriers to inpatient treatment. Although research in the general population shows that high-intensity referrals are more effective than low-intensity referrals at engaging and retaining individuals in outpatient AOD treatment, the impact of referral intensity has not been assessed for women only. To examine this issue, a secondary analysis was conducted using an existing data set that included a sample of 109 women. Although intensity of referral was not related to entry into or relapse during treatment, high-intensity refe
