A comparative study of transoral and submental versus vestibular endoscopic thyroidectomy in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is widely adopted for its cosmetic advantage but is associated with postoperative oral discomfort and mental nerve injury. This study aimed to evaluate whether a modified technique, transoral and submental endoscopic thyroidectomy (TOaST), improves perioperative outcomes in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 136 patients with PTC who underwent either TOaST (n = 51) or TOETVA (n = 85). Key outcomes included operative time, time to oral intake, postoperative

Texture-Modified Soy Protein Gels Using Transglutaminase and Agar for Elderly Dysphagia Management.

Dysphagia, a condition characterized by difficulty swallowing, is commonly found in the elderly, increasing the risk of choking and aspiration. This study aimed to develop a texturally modified soy protein gel that meets the Universal Design Food (UDF) standard, specifically for elderly individuals with dysphagia. To create soft-textured foods, the gel's texture was modified using transglutaminase at varying concentrations (0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0%, w/v) in combination with agar. The soy protein gel prepared with 0.5% transglutaminase exhibited the lowest hardness value (2.2 × 103 N/m2) and was cl

Development of NADES-Annatto Seed Extract for Enhancing 3D Printed Food Designed for Dysphagia Patients.

This study develops a 3D printed food designed for dysphagia patients, incorporating a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES)-annatto seed extract. The objective was to enhance textural properties and bioactive retention in food matrices tailored for individuals with swallowing difficulties. NADES extraction was compared to ethanol, with the extracts incorporated into gelatin and starch hydrogels. Gelatin, a widely used biopolymer, improved mechanical properties and printability, ensuring a cohesive and structured matrix for 3D printing. Textural analysis showed that starch-based 3D printed hyd

The effectiveness of kinesiology taping on dysphagia in brain tumor survivors after neurosurgery: study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Dysphagia is a common complication in brain tumor survivors, either as a direct symptom of the tumor or a result of neurosurgery. With improved survival rates, the need for effective rehabilitation strategies is more crucial than ever. Kinesiology taping has shown promise in dysphagia rehabilitation for stroke patients, but its potential in brain tumor survivors is largely unstudied and represents a significant research opportunity. This pilot study aims to assess feasibility and gather preliminary data on the impact of kinesiology taping, in addition to standard dysphagia care, on improving s

A high-dose coenzyme Q10-emulgel for chronic oral therapy of deficient patients with secondary dysphagia.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is the major endogenously fat-soluble antioxidant synthesized in the mitochondrion inner membrane as the electron carrier in the respiratory chain. In CoQ10-deficient patients, early high-oral doses (5-50 mg/kg/day) can constrain renal dysfunction and neurological signs. CoQ10, a typical class IV drug, with low bulk density, was dissolved at high-dose (1 g) in the oil phase (20:80 O/W) of a novel emulgel of small serving size (25 g) for its chronic administration in deficient patients with secondary dysphagia, as an alternative to maintain therapy adherence. The novelty is

Cervical osteophytes resulting in dysphagia: A case report with literature review.

Dysphagia may result from either organic or structural conditions, whether malignant or benign, or functional disorders, primarily involving motility or sensory perception. However, its occurrence due to cervical osteophytes is a rare phenomenon. This report presents a case of anterior cervical osteophytes inducing dysphagia. An 81-year-old man presented with complaints of weakness, fever, dysphagia, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed a bulge in the posterior pharyngeal wall. A computed tomography scan revealed anterior cervical osteophytes extending from C2 t

From Congenital Torticollis to Leigh Syndrome: A Case Report of Diagnostic Evolution in an Infant.

Leigh syndrome is a rare, progressive mitochondrial disorder of childhood. Early diagnosis is often challenging due to nonspecific clinical manifestations. We report a 1-month-old male infant initially referred for suspected congenital muscular torticollis who ultimately received a diagnosis of Leigh syndrome. Despite unremarkable perinatal history, he subsequently developed persistent feeding difficulties, recurrent vomiting, failure to thrive, and global developmental delay. Early neurological assessment revealed poor repertoire patterns on General Movement Assessment. The Neonatal Oral-Moto
