Histopathology of the central nervous system in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Histopathologic findings in the central nervous system in 100 autopsy cases of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) gave evidence of a variety of opportunistic infections and probably of infection by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Gliomesenchymal cell nodules (47 per cent of cases) and spongiform alterations with demyelination were common. Vasculitides (8 per cent) and lesions such as acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis may be attributable partly to hypersensitivity reactions. Multinucleated cells, including giant cells that could be a hallmark of HIV encephalitis, were common in

Novel Carbon Dots Nanomaterials for the Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Lung Injury and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Mechanisms and Applications.

Acute Lung Injury (ALI) and its severe manifestation, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), represent critical clinical challenges characterized by diffuse alveolar damage, uncontrolled inflammatory storms, and oxidative stress. Despite supportive therapies such as mechanical ventilation have advanced considerably, mortality rates remain persistently high. Over the past five years, Carbon Dots (CDs)-a novel class of zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials-have demonstrated significant potential for the precision theranostics of ALI/ARDS due to their ultra-small size (<10 nm), tunable photo

NLRP3 inflammasome in acute kidney injury: molecular mechanisms, post-translational regulation, and immunotherapeutic potential.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a critical clinical syndrome characterized by a rapid decline in renal function. Dysregulated inflammatory responses play a crucial role in its pathogenesis, contributing to high patient mortality and a tendency to progress to chronic kidney disease (CKD). As a crucial sensor of the innate immune system, the NLRP3 inflammasome participates in the occurrence and development of AKI and its transition to CKD by activating caspase-1, promoting the maturation of IL-1β/IL-18, and inducing pyroptosis. This review elucidates the molecular composition of the NLRP3 inflammas

KLF transcription factors in metabolic kidney disease: from podocyte protection to tubulointerstitial fibrosis.

Metabolic kidney disease comprises renal disorders driven or worsened by systemic metabolic abnormalities, including diabetic kidney disease, obesity-related kidney injury, hyperuricemia-associated nephropathy, and metabolic syndrome-associated chronic kidney disease. Despite different triggers, these disorders share podocyte injury, glomerular endothelial dysfunction, tubular lipotoxicity, mitochondrial impairment, oxidative stress, inflammation, and tubulointerstitial fibrosis, indicating a common program of metabolic stress-induced renal cell reprogramming. Krüppel-like factors (KLFs) are z

MicroRNA profiles in multiple sclerosis: A review of the literature.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder that affects the central nervous system. Although its exact cause remains unknown, it is known that an autoimmune response, triggered by interactions between genetic predisposition and environmental factors, leads to an attack against the myelin sheath. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding regulatory RNAs that modulate post-transcriptional gene expression, may play an important role in MS pathophysiology, affecting immunological pathways such as T-cell differentiation, macrophage activation, and apoptosis regulation. Studies hav

An mRNA-based broad-spectrum antiviral inspired by ISG15 deficiency protects against viral infections in vitro and in vivo.

Type I interferons (IFN-Is) are cytokines with potent antiviral and inflammatory capacities. IFN-I signaling drives the expression of thousands of IFN-I-stimulated genes (ISGs), whose aggregate function results in the control of viral infections. A few of these ISGs are tasked with negatively regulating the IFN-I response to prevent overt inflammation. ISG15 is a negative regulator whose absence leads to persistent, low-grade elevation of ISG expression and concurrent, often self-resolving, mild autoinflammation. The limited breadth and low-grade persistence of ISGs expressed in ISG15 deficien

[Research progress on ICU-acquired weakness in sepsis patients].

With the development of critical medical emergency technology, the success rate of sepsis treatment has been significantly improved, and the improvement of the long-term quality of life of sepsis survivors has also attracted more and more attention. ICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) refers to a group of syndromes with systemic and symmetrical muscle weakness during the intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization and cannot be explained by the patient's own disease, which often involve diaphragm and skeletal muscle, resulting in difficulty in weaning and nosocomial infection. The incidence of ICU-AW

Kaurenoic acid is a potent inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 RNA synthesis, virion assembly, and release in vitro.

INTRODUCTION: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, continues to pose global health challenges despite the availability of approved vaccines and antiviral drugs. The emergence of new variants of SARS-CoV-2 and ongoing post-COVID complications necessitate continuous exploration of effective treatments. Kaurenoic acid (KA) is a tetracyclic diterpenoid isolated from plants of the Copaifera genus and has been previously recognized for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antitumor pr

Emerging role of N-acetyltransferase 10 in diseases: RNA ac4C modification and beyond.

N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C), a conserved RNA modification, plays critical roles in RNA stability and translation. As the primary enzyme catalyzing ac4C, N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10) is increasingly implicated in diverse diseases. This review systematically explores NAT10's multifaceted contributions to cancer, autoimmune disorders, infectious diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and metabolic syndromes. In cancer, NAT10 drives malignancy by enhancing oncogenic processes such as proliferation, metastasis, and therapy resistance, with overexpression linked to poor prognosis across multiple malign

Homer-3 antibody in autoimmune cerebellar syndromes: a potentially treatable mimic of MSA-C - A review.

Autoimmune cerebellar ataxia (ACA) associated with anti-Homer-3 antibodies is a rare but increasingly recognized immune-mediated neurological condition. It represents a potentially treatable cause of sporadic cerebellar syndrome and may clinically mimic primarily multiple system atrophy of the cerebellar type (MSA-C), and less frequently, other atypical parkinsonian disorders. Because of the significant clinical overlap with neurodegenerative diseases, particularly MSA-C, Homer-3-associated ACA may be underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, delaying effective treatment. This narrative review synthesiz

Temporal Association Between Dengue Outbreaks and Neurologic Autoimmune Diseases in French Guiana.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent decades have witnessed the emergence of arbovirus infections, such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses, which are responsible for neurologic complications such as Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). To date, it has mainly been demonstrated that these neurologic complications occur concomitantly with infectious processes. We hypothesized that arbovirus infections may also influence the incidence of autoimmune diseases of the central or peripheral nervous system. METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational, single-center study conducted between January 200

Focus on brain-lung crosstalk: Preventing or treating the pathological vicious circle between the brain and the lung.

Recently, there has been increasing attention to bidirectional information exchange between the brain and lungs. Typical physiological data is communicated by channels like the circulation and sympathetic nervous system. However, communication between the brain and lungs can also occur in pathological conditions. Studies have shown that severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), cerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and other brain diseases can lead to lung damage. Conversely, severe lung diseases such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pneumonia, and respiratory failure ca

Advance in the mechanism and clinical research of myalgia in long COVID.

As severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to evolve, mortality rates of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have significantly decreased. However, a variable proportion of patients exhibit persistent prolonged symptoms of COVID-19 infection (long COVID). This virus primarily attacks respiratory system, but numerous individuals complain persistent skeletal muscle pain or worsening pre-existing muscle pain post COVID-19, which severely affects the quality of life and recovery. Currently, there is limited research on the skeletal muscle pain in long COVID. In this

Red Flags for Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy Associated with Sarcoidosis or Connective Tissue Diseases.

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare autoimmune disorder of the peripheral nervous system. Diagnosis relies on clinical and electrophysiological criteria. Various disorders requiring specific treatment regimens may be associated with CIDP, including sarcoidosis (SAR-CIDP) and connective tissue disease (CTD-CIDP). Therefore, it is important to distinguish between CIDP, SAR-CIDP and CTD-CIDP. In this retrospective monocentric study, we analyzed 16 patients with SAR-CIDP and 11 with CTD-CIDP and compared them with a group of 17 patients with idiopathic CIDP.

[Nutrition and dietary supplements].

Nutritional problems occur very frequently in patients with cancer and different problems are associated with separate phases of the disease. Therefore, it is principally recommended to regularly screen all patients with cancer for nutritional disorders and in the case of conspicuous results meticulous diagnostics should be carried to clarify the underlying causes. The focus is on food intake and possible disturbing complaints, the physical performance index, nutritional status including weight change and body composition, the metabolic pattern and the presence of a systemic inflammatory react

Sequential Extracorporeal Therapy in Sepsis.

Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome initiated by a dysregulated host response to infection. Maladaptive inflammatory burst damages host tissues and causes organ dysfunction, the burden of which has been demonstrated as the paramount predictor of worse clinical outcomes. In this setting, septic shock represents the most lethal complication of sepsis and implies profound alterations of both the cardiovascular system and cellular metabolism with consequent high mortality rate. Although an increasing amount of evidence attempts to characterize this clinical condition, the complexity of multiple

Comparative investigation of analgesic tolerance to taurine, sodium salicylate and morphine: Involvement of peripheral muscarinic receptors.

Nowadays various analgesic medications are used for the management of acute and chronic pain. Among these opioid and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs stand in the first line of therapy, however, prolonged administration of these substance is generally challenged by development of analgesic tolerance in patients. Therefore, it is highly valuable to find new pharmacological strategies for prolonged therapeutic procedures. In this respect, Taurine, a free amino acid, has been shown to induce significant analgesia at both spinal and peripheral levels through cholinergic mechanisms. In the pre

Aquaporin-4-Positive Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Presenting with Paraneoplastic Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an inflammatory central nervous system disorder that preferentially affects the optic nerve and the spinal cord. Although NMOSD is more commonly an idiopathic autoimmune condition associated with antibodies against aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-IgG, the disease may also occur as a paraneoplastic syndrome in rare instances. In these cases, the expression of AQP4 by the tumor is likely the trigger of the autoimmune response. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 32-year-old woman who presented with progressive tetraparesis, cranial inv

Development of systemic lupus erythematosus after dupilumab treatment in a case of atopic dermatitis.

Dupilumab, a monoclonal antibody that specifically inhibits signal transductions by interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13, has been used to treat T-helper (Th)2-type allergic disorders, including atopic dermatitis and asthma. We report a 21-year-old female patient with atopic dermatitis who developed systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) unexpectedly after dupilumab treatment. Her skin lesions partially improved after dupilumab treatment; however, a part of her skin lesions on the face, nape, and upper extremities were refractory even after a 15-month period of dupilumab treatment. These dupilumab-refract
