BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) has been the third leading cause of hospital-acquired AKI. Retinoic acid (RA), the main derivative of vitamin A, has preventative and therapeutic effects in ischemia-reperfusion-AKI and UUO models, but little is known about its effects on CI-AKI. This study aimed to explore the effects of RA on CI-AKI as well as the underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: We established a new miniature pig model of CI-AKI by catheterizing the external jugular vein and injecting a single dose of iohexol after dehydration. Bun, Scr, serum and urinary RBP and β-M

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 6-year-old castrated male Bactrian camel was evaluated because of a 14hour history of oliguria and stranguria that progressed to anuria.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Perineal urethral pulsations and intermittent tail flagging with no accompanying urination were observed. Ultrasonography of the urethra revealed multiple hyperechoic foci with shadowing artifact indicative of calculi present in the penile urethra distal to the sigmoid flexure. Rectal palpation revealed a pulsating hard urethra and intact distended urinary bladder. Further clinical examination was not possible because o

AIMS: Continent urinary diversion is preferred by some patients and orthotopic urinary diversion (OUD) has become the procedure of choice for most men following cystectomy for invasive bladder cancer. OUD in women, however, is less common, likely due to a high rate of hypercontinence (HC), potentially from lax support of pelvic structures similar to pelvic organ prolapse. As such, we evaluated if abdominal sacrocolpopexy (ASC) at the time of OUD in women led to decreased rates of HC.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all female patients receiving OUD by a single surgeon and ASC was performed

PURPOSE: We examined the ability of antimicrobial agents to diffuse through the retention balloons of urinary catheters and inhibit their encrustation by Proteus mirabilis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An agar diffusion screening test was developed to detect agents capable of diffusing through catheter balloons and inhibiting the growth of P. mirabilis. The effect of inflating the balloons with antibacterials on the ability of P. mirabilis to encrust catheters was tested in laboratory models of the catheterized bladder.
RESULTS: Of 18 antimicrobial agents active on P. mirabilis only mandelic acid,

PURPOSE: To determine whether an antiproliferative urine factor that we previously discovered to be specific for urine from interstitial cystitis (IC) patients originated in the lower urinary tract or a more proximal site.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sequential catheterized urine specimens were collected under sterile conditions from the bladder and renal pelvis of 20 IC patients and one control patient (with stress incontinence). Antiproliferative activity was determined by 3H-thymidine incorporation of primary normal adult bladder epithelial cells cultured with pH- and osmolality-corrected bladd

Chyluria is the passage of chylus into urine resulting in fistulization through the lymphatic system and the urinary system. This rare condition is usually caused by filaria infestation or malformations, neoplasia or trauma. We report a case of a 18-year-old man. The patient presented milky urine which had appeared after angiography following minor leg trauma. Physical examination revealed asymmetry of the face and cutaneous dyschromia. Blood tests revealed hypogammaglobulinemia and altered CD4/CD8 ratio (0.6). Urine tests showed proteinuria (30 mg/dl), lipiduria (triglycerides 750 mg/dl) and

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Rhabdomyosarcoma [RMS] is a malignant soft-tissue neoplasm characterized by skeletal muscle differentiation. It accounts for 7 % of childhood malignancies and is, by a wide margin, the most common sarcoma of childhood (Pappo, 1996). Approximately 20 % of cases of childhood rhabdomyosarcoma occur in the genitourinary tract (vagina, urinary bladder, prostate, paratestis, and uterus), and they are most commonly observed in the head and neck region.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reviewed the case of a 42-year-old male who presented with a 2-week history of blood in the urine,

INTRODUCTION: Historically after complete primary repair of exstrophy (CPRE) in girls, it had been more likely to observe urinary incontinence than retention. Following recent technical modifications of elongating the urethra and narrowing the bladder neck, the authors have observed a high rate of urinary retention in girls after CPRE.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to identify factors that may be responsible for this observation by reviewing historical and current outcomes. The authors hypothesized that differences in anatomic dimensions at the time of CPRE may contribute to urinary retention.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is now recognized as a prevalent, physically and emotionally disruptive, and costly health problem in the geriatric population. Because incontinence may be a manifestation of a subacute or reversible process within or outside of the lower urinary tract, and because effective treatment is available, it is important for primary care physicians to identify and appropriately assess incontinence in their geriatric patients. The initial evaluation of an incontinent geriatric patients. The initial evaluation of an incontinent geriatric patient includes a targeted history and

Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is frequently characterized by coexisting storage and voiding abnormalities, particularly in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and concomitant detrusor overactivity (DO) and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (DSD). Conventional therapies often improve either storage or voiding function at the expense of the other, creating a significant therapeutic challenge. Combined intradetrusor and urethral botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A) injection has emerged as a potential dual-target strategy aimed at simultaneously improving bladder storage and

INTRODUCTION: Urethral stricture, characterized by urethral narrowing due to fibrosis and scar tissue, is a common urological condition. It occurs in about 200 per 100,000 people, with increasing incidence over the past 50 years. Internal urethrotomy is commonly performed for short strictures, but its high recurrence rate has led to the exploration of adjunctive treatments like adjunct of triamcinolone application. This study aimed to analyze the effect of triamcinolone as adjunctive therapy for internal urethrotomy on reducing urethral stricture recurrence in urethral stricture patients.

Sacral agenesis (SA) is a rare condition characterized by the absence of one or more lower sacral vertebral bodies. In India, children with this condition often present late with symptoms primarily related to urinary and bowel dysfunction. Maternal diabetes is the only confirmed risk factor, significantly elevating the incidence rate. We discuss a case of a nine-year-old female who presented to the pediatric outpatient department (OPD) with chronic constipation and urinary retention, having experienced symptoms since infancy. Initial investigations at peripheral hospitals had yielded no clear

BACKGROUND: Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD) is common in patients with a urinary catheter and is a risk factor for emergence agitation (EA). The mainstay of CRBD management is anticholinergics. Dexamethasone inhibits acetylcholine release. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dexamethasone on postoperative CRBD and EA.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 90 patients undergoing urological surgery requiring urinary catheterization were allocated randomly to one of two groups (each n = 45). Before induction of anesthesia, the dexamethasone group received 10 mg (2 ml) of dexamet…
