Mango fruit has become increasingly popular in recent years. We report on 2 patients who developed anaphylactic reactions after the ingestion of fresh mango. Allergy to mango was confirmed by a positive skin prick test result and positive cellular allergen stimulation test results. Neither of the patients had detectable mango-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels. We report the first case of a severe anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reaction to sodium ferric gluconate complex in a pregnant patient. Sodium ferric gluconate complex is felt to be one of the safest forms of iron therapy during pregnancy. This case highlights the need for extreme caution and vigilance in pregnant patients receiving any type of parenteral iron therapy.

The results from the Swedish system for reporting severe and fatal reactions caused by food for the period 1993-96 were published in Lakartidningen in 1997. We now report the results for the period 1997-2003. The number of fatal cases has decreased from 1.75 to 0.86 per year and the number of life-threatening cases from 3 to I per year. A woman aged 66 was prescribed acetazolamide (Diamox) in the outpatient clinic because of glaucoma. She went into irreversible anaphylactic shock with massive pulmonary oedema, probably due to a cross reaction in sulphonamide allergy. Before prescribing acetazolamide, the physician should inquire about sulphonamide allergy because of the related chemical structure of the substances. In our country approximately forty people die every year from anaphylaxis caused by hymenoptera stings. Between 1988 and 1996, 48 patients, who had experienced a systemic reaction to hymenoptera sting and were proved to have specific IgE antibodies to wasp, yellow or both (RAST score > or = 2), received rush immunotherapy (RIT) using venom extracts in our hospital.
