Tiny but mighty: Insects can drive carrion decomposition in the absence of facultative vertebrate scavengers.

Scavengers play a key role in recycling animal biomass, yet the relative contributions of insects and vertebrates to this process remain poorly understood. Moreover, understanding whether one scavenger group can compensate for the absence of another is critical for predicting how carrion decomposition may respond to changes in community composition or seasonal conditions. To address this, we assessed the capacity of scavenging insects and facultative vertebrate scavengers to recycle animal biomass in alpine Australia. We measured carcass persistence (decay rates) of 64 eastern gray kangaroos (

The epidemiology of ceftriaxone and cotrimoxazole-resistant Escherichia coli from humans, poultry, and their environment in central Malawi: A cross-sectional study.

The poultry industry represents an important reservoir for clinical antibiotic resistance, especially in low- and middle-income-countries where food security pressures drive intensified farming and antibiotic use. However, evidence linking poultry production to public health risks remains limited in settings such as Malawi. This study examined Escherichia coli resistance to ceftriaxone and cotrimoxazole, two antibiotics with distinct stewardship priorities. We conducted a cross-sectional study between July and September 2022 in Malawi's Central region, targeting poultry farms. Our mixed-method

Interferon-gamma receptor signaling regulates innate immunity during Staphylococcus aureus craniotomy infection.

A craniotomy is a neurosurgical procedure performed to access the intracranial space. In 3-5% of cases, infections can develop, most caused by Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation on the skull surface. Medical management of this infection is difficult, as biofilm properties confer immune and antimicrobial recalcitrance to the infection and necessitate additional surgical procedures. Furthermore, treatment failure rates can be appreciably high. These factors, compounded with rapidly expanding rates of antimicrobial resistance, highlight the need to develop alternative treatment strategies to

Lactobacillus Re-Engineers Gut Microbiota to Overcome E. coli Colonization Resistance in Mice.

The intestinal health and functionality of animals play pivotal roles in nutrient digestion and absorption, as well as in maintaining defense against pathogenic invasions. These biological processes are modulated by various determinants, including husbandry conditions, dietary composition, and gut microbial ecology. The excessive use of anthropogenic antibiotics may disrupt intestinal microbiota composition, potentially leading to dysbiosis that directly compromises host homeostasis. While Lactobacillus species are recognized for their immunomodulatory properties, their precise mechanisms in r

Dynamics of Tunga penetrans infections and severity of associated morbidity among pigs during the dry season in rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease which is common in impoverished communities. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is caused by female sand fleas, Tunga penetrans, and pigs are amongst the major domestic animal reservoirs. Depending on the environment, tungiasis occurs throughout the year or preferentially in the dry seasons. This study investigated changes in sand flea abundance and associated morbidity in pigs during a dry season. METHODS: Tunga penetrans lesions were counted and staged in 35 pigs amongst 22 households with at least one affected pig. Five weekly examinations were

Evaluation of Automated Object-Detection Algorithms for Koala Detection in Infrared Aerial Imagery.

Effective detection techniques are important for wildlife monitoring and conservation applications and are especially helpful for species that live in complex environments, such as arboreal animals like koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus). The implementation of infrared cameras and drones has demonstrated encouraging outcomes, regardless of whether the detection was performed by human observers or automated algorithms. In the case of koala detection in eucalyptus plantations, there is a risk to spotters during forestry operations. In addition, fatigue and tedium associated with the difficult and r

The integrated analysis and underlying mechanisms of FNDC5 on diabetic induced cognitive deficits.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic hyperglycemia is considered as an important factor to promote the neurodegenerative process of brain, and the synaptic plasticity as well as heterogeneity of hippocampal cells are thought to be associated with cognitive dysfunction in the early process of neurodegeneration. To date, fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5) has been highlighted its protective role in multiple neurodegenerative diseases. However, the potential molecular and cellular mechanisms of FNDC5 on synaptic plasticity regulation in cognitive impairment (CI) induced by diabetics are stil

Seroprevalence and risk factors for brucellosis amongst livestock and humans in a multi-herd ranch system in Kagera, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis remains a significant health and economic challenge for livestock and humans globally. Despite its public health implications, the factors driving the endemic persistence of Brucella at the human-livestock interface in Tanzania remain poorly elucidated. This study aimed to identify the seroprevalence of Brucella infection in livestock and humans within a ranching system and determine associated risk factors for disease endemicity. METHODS: A cross-sectional sero-epidemiological study was conducted in 2023 in Tanzania's Karagwe District, involving 725 livestock (cattle,

Molecular Epidemiologic and Geo-Spatial Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus Cultured from Skin and Soft Tissue Infections from United States-Born and Immigrant Patients Living in New York City.

(1) Background: With increasing international travel and mass population displacement due to war, famine, climate change, and immigration, pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), can also spread across borders. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) most commonly causes skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), as well as more invasive infections. One clonal strain, S. aureus USA300, originating in the United States, has spread worldwide. We hypothesized that S. aureus USA300 would still be the leading clonal strain among US-born compared to non-US-born residents, even though risk

Different Swine Production Systems Can Shape Slurry Resistome at Mechanism and Class Levels Based on Swine Manure Evaluation.

Antimicrobial resistance is a major threat to public health. Antimicrobial use in animal husbandry is a major concern since it can favor an increase in antimicrobial resistance among farms. Herein, we aim to better understand and characterize the main resistome profiles in microbial communities found in pig farms. Sampling of swine manure was performed in two different timepoints (October 2019 and January 2020) in each of the 14 different swine farms, located in the mesoregion of Western Santa Catarina state in Brazil, a pole of swine product production of worldwide importance. Samples were di

Hyperimmune Targeting Staphylococcal Toxins Effectively Protect Against USA 300 MRSA Infection in Mouse Bacteremia and Pneumonia Models.

Staphylococcus aureus has been acquiring multiple drug resistance and has evolved into superbugs such as Methicillin/Vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA/VRSA) and, consequently, is a major cause of nosocomial and community infections associated with high morbidity and mortality for which no FDA-approved vaccines or biotherapeutics are available. Previous efforts targeting the surface-associated antigens have failed in clinical testing. Here, we generated hyperimmune products from sera in rabbits against six major S. aureus toxins targeted by an experimental vaccine (IBT-V02) and demonstrated

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Persistence of Enveloped Viruses in Environmental Waters and Wastewater in the Absence of Disinfectants.

Enveloped viruses are characterized by a lipid-containing envelope that encapsulates the virion, and they have been the cause of major outbreaks and pandemics. Some enveloped viruses are excreted in feces and other bodily fluids of infected people and animals, raising the question of their fate in the aquatic environment. Consequently, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the decay rate constants (k) of enveloped viruses from 12 families (i.e., Coronaviridae, Cystoviridae (specifically Phi6), Filoviridae, Hepadnaviridae, Herpesviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Pneumo

Airborne Disinfection by Dry Fogging Efficiently Inactivates Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), Mycobacteria, and Bacterial Spores and Shows Limitations of Commercial Spore Carriers.

Airborne disinfection of high-containment facilities before maintenance or between animal studies is crucial. Commercial spore carriers (CSC) coated with 106 spores of Geobacillus stearothermophilus are often used to assess the efficacy of disinfection. We used quantitative carrier testing (QCT) procedures to compare the sensitivity of CSC with that of surrogates for nonenveloped and enveloped viruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), mycobacteria, and spores, to an aerosolized mixture of peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide (aPAA-HP). We then used the

Surfactant lung delivery with LISA and InSurE in adult rabbits with respiratory distress.

BACKGROUND: In preterm infants, InSurE (Intubation-Surfactant-Extubation) and LISA (less invasive surfactant administration) techniques allow for exogenous surfactant administration while reducing lung injury associated with mechanical ventilation. We compared the acute pulmonary response and lung deposition of surfactant by LISA and InSurE in surfactant-depleted adult rabbits. METHODS: Twenty-six spontaneously breathing surfactant-depleted adult rabbits (6-7 weeks old) with moderate RDS and managed with nasal continuous positive airway pressure were randomized to 3 groups: (1) 200 mg/kg of s
