High sodium diet intake and cardiovascular diseases: An attributable death study in Tianjin, China.

There is clear evidence that high sodium intake is associated with many health issues including hypertension and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Several national and worldwide studies have estimated deaths from CVDs attributable to high sodium. But how to evaluate the impact of high sodium intake on diseases using regional routine monitoring and investigation data is necessary and important. Our study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the high sodium intake attributed to CVDs deaths based on the routine monitoring data from China National Nutrition and Health Survey (CNNHS) in Tianjin, China. Heart Rate Variability Features as Predictors of Intermittent Theta-Burst Stimulation Response in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with autonomic dysfunction as indicated by deficits in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. These abnormalities are expressed as elevated heart rate and reduced heart rate variability (HRV), respectively. Intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), a form of transcranial magnetic stimulation, has demonstrated effectiveness in PTSD. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether HRV may be an iTBS biomarker for PTSD and whether iTBS impacts autonomic activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty veterans with PTSD participated

Civilian moral injury: associations with trauma type and high-frequency heart rate variability in two trauma-exposed community-based samples.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury exposure (MIE) and distress (MID) may indirectly affect the relationship between trauma exposure and alterations in autonomic regulation [assessed via high-frequency heart rate variability (hfHRV)] in civilians, but this has not been tested in prior research. We conducted two exploratory studies to examine trauma types' associations with MIE and MID among civilian medical patients (Study 1) and explore how these facets may indirectly affect the relationship between trauma type and hfHRV among civilians seeking mental health services (Study 2). METHODS: Participants re

Investigating the possible mechanisms of autonomic dysfunction post-COVID-19.

Patients with long COVID suffer from many neurological manifestations that persist for 3 months following infection by SARS-CoV-2. Autonomic dysfunction (AD) or dysautonomia is one complication of long COVID that causes patients to experience fatigue, dizziness, syncope, dyspnea, orthostatic intolerance, nausea, vomiting, and heart palpitations. The pathophysiology behind AD onset post-COVID is largely unknown. As such, this review aims to highlight the potential mechanisms by which AD occurs in patients with long COVID. The first proposed mechanism includes the direct invasion of the hypothal

Sleep-Disordered Breathing and Cardiac Arrhythmias in Adults: Mechanistic Insights and Clinical Implications: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), characterized by specific underlying physiological mechanisms, comprises obstructive and central pathophysiology, affects nearly 1 billion individuals worldwide, and is associated with excessive cardiopulmonary morbidity. Strong evidence implicates SDB in cardiac arrhythmogenesis. Immediate consequences of SDB include autonomic nervous system fluctuations, recurrent hypoxia, alterations in carbon dioxide/acid-base status, disrupted sleep architecture, and accompanying increases in negative intrathoracic pressures directly affecting cardiac function. Day-night …

Differential impact of individual autonomic domains on clinical outcomes in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: While autonomic failure is a well-known prognostic factor for more aggressive disease progression in Parkinson's disease (PD), with a three- to sevenfold higher risk of dementia and death within 10 years after the diagnosis, the individual impact of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urogenital, thermoregulatory, and pupillomotor autonomic domains on PD clinical outcomes remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the 5-year risk of developing dementia, falls, postural instability, dysarthria, and dysphagia in PD patients with and without autonomic impairment at baseline

RFC1 repeat expansions: A recurrent cause of sensory and autonomic neuropathy with cough and ataxia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ataxia and cough are rare features in hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSAN), a group of diseases of mostly unknown genetic cause. Biallelic repeat expansions in RFC1 are associated with cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of RFC1 repeat expansions in a cohort of HSAN patients. METHODS: After unremarkable whole-exome sequencing (WES) analysis, we performed repeat-primed PCR to detect intronic RFC1 expansions in 12 HSAN families, who all presented with chronic cough. RES

Neuromuscular amyloidosis: Unmasking the master of disguise.

Amyloidosis refers to an etiologically heterogeneous group of protein misfolding diseases, pathologically characterized by extracellular amyloid fibrils producing congophillic amorphous deposits in organs and tissues, which may lead to severe organ dysfunction and mortality. Clinical presentations vary and are often nonspecific, depending on what organs or tissues are affected. In systemic amyloidosis, the peripheral nervous system is commonly affected, whereas the skeletal muscles are only rarely involved. Immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis and hereditary transthyretin (ATTRv) amyloi

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity and the later development of epilepsy in a chemotherapy-associated brain damage.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy in childhood leukemia potentially induces brain lesions and neurological sequelae. Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) is known as a treatment-associated complication; however, the full clinical spectra of PSH remain to be elusive. CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old girl was diagnosed of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) M5. After the intensification therapy, she developed recurrent symptoms of episodic tachycardia, hypertension and perspiration lasting for several hours per day. The low-frequency-high-frequency ratio on Holter electrocardiography was rapidly increased from

Reconceptualizing non-pharmacologic approaches to Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) and Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS): A theoretical and evidence-based approach. Part II: The clinical application of nonpharmacologic care for NAS/NOWS.

There has been increasing emphasis on the importance of the development of self-regulatory capacities of the individual as the cornerstone of development. The caregivers' abilities to manage their own attention, emotions, physiology and behaviors influence the development of the child's self-regulatory and interactive capacities, and thereby their overall development. Newborns prenatally exposed to psychoactive substances and/or to other prenatal stressors such as maternal poor nutrition, increased maternal stress, trauma, difficult and/or impoverished environments, in tandem with genetic pred

Physiopharmacological properties of the testicular capsule: A concise review.

The testicular capsules of different mammalian species exhibit spontaneous motor activity. In addition, contractions can be mediated by neuronal stimulation or exogenous drug administration. However, the physiological role of testicular capsule motor activity is still not well understood. Nevertheless, there is evidence for putative roles in spermatozoa transport from the testis to the caput epididymis, control of interstitial/intratesticular pressure and testicular blood flow. In this review, we have collated information about the agents that regulate testicular capsule motor activity, their

Cardiovascular Autonomic Disturbances in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction.

In heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), diminished tonic and reflex vagal heart rate modulation and exaggerated sympathetic outflow and neural norepinephrine release are evident from disease inception. Each of these disturbances of autonomic regulation has been independently associated with shortened survival, and β-adrenoceptor antagonism and therapeutic autonomic modulation by other means have been demonstrated, in clinical trials, to lessen symptoms and prolong survival. In contrast, data concerning the autonomic status of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection

Altered structure and functional connectivity of the central autonomic network in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder.

Evidence suggests peripheral autonomic structures may contribute to autonomic dysfunction in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD). However, whether the central autonomic network (CAN) is affected in iRBD remains unclear. Magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired from 65 participants (32 patients with iRBD and 33 matched healthy controls). We investigated the CAN in patients with iRBD using a combined voxel-based morphometry and resting-state functional connectivity analysis and characterised the relationships between alterations of the CAN and autonomic symptoms.
