Biopsy-proven pulmonary determinants of heart disease.

Heart disease (HD) can stress the alveolar blood-gas barrier, resulting in parenchymal inflammation and remodeling. Patients with HD may therefore display any of the symptoms commonly attributed to primary pulmonary disease, although tissue documentation of corresponding changes through surgical lung biopsy (SLB) is rarely done. Intent on exploring the basis of HD-related alveolar-capillary barrier dysfunction, a retrospective analysis of SLB histopathology was conducted in patients with clinically diagnosed HD, diffuse pulmonary infiltrates, and no evidence of primary pulmonary disease. A micromodel analysis of factors influencing NAPL removal by surfactant foam flooding.

A methodology to study the trichloroethylene (TCE) and dodecane removal in porous media by surfactant foams (SF) was presented by using etched-glass micromodels. The purpose of this work was to systematically evaluate the impact of various physicochemical factors such as gas fraction (GF), surfactant concentration, pore structure and nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) types on NAPL removal during SF flooding. The TCE displacement by SF was dependent on the gas fraction of SF. Low GFs (50% and 66%) were more efficient for TCE removal and sweep efficiencies than a high GF (85%). An increase in TCE r

Influence of surfactant-facilitated interfacial tension reduction on chlorinated solvent migration in porous media: observations and numerical simulation.

The ability of a multiphase flow model to capture the migration behavior of chlorinated solvents under conditions of surfactant-facilitated interfacial tension (IFT) reduction is assessed through comparison of model predictions with observations from controlled laboratory experiments. Tetrachloroethene (PCE) was released in two-dimensional saturated systems, packed with sandy media that incorporated rectangular lenses of capillary contrast. Spatially uniform interfacial tension conditions were created in the tanks by pre-flushing the porous medium with either Milli Q water or an aqueous surfac

Effects of fasciculation on the outgrowth of neurites from spinal ganglia in culture.

This report describes the influence of neurite fasciculation on two aspects of nerve growth from chick spinal ganglia in vitro: the inhibition of outgrowth by high concentrations of nerve growth factor (NGF) and the preferential growth of neurites toward a capillary tube containing NGF. These studies involved a comparison of cultures of single cells, cell aggregates, and intact ganglia and the use of antibodies against the nerve cell adhesion molecule (CAM) to perturb fasciculation under a variety of conditions. The inhibition of outgrowth, which was observed with ganglia and aggregates but no

Investigation of heterocellular features of the mouse retinal neurovascular unit by 3D electron microscopy.

The retina has a complex structure with a diverse collection of component cells that work together to facilitate vision. The retinal capillaries supplying the nutritional requirements to the inner retina have an intricate system of neural, glial and vascular elements that interconnect to form the neurovascular unit (NVU). The retina has no autonomic nervous system and so relies on the NVU as an interdependent, physical and functional unit to alter blood flow appropriately to changes in the physiological environment. The importance of this is demonstrated by alterations in NVU function being ap…

Halting the Progression of Cicatricial Alopecia with Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin.

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is a chronic variant of cutaneous lupus erythematosus characterized by well-defined erythematous plaques with adherent scales and follicular plugging. The affected scalp shows erythema, edema, atrophy, alopecia, and telangiectasia. Trichoscopy of DLE shows branching capillaries, white patches, keratin plugs, reduced follicular ostia, and white dots and blue-gray dots arranged in speckles pattern. Prompt diagnosis and aggressive, early multimodal therapy helps in preventing disfiguring hair loss and psychosocial sequelae. Hereby, we present a case of reversal o…

A Patient Presents for Dental Extraction and Goes into Sickle Cell Crisis in the Dental Chair.

Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited autosomal recessive hemoglobinopathy associated with multiorgan damage. This single gene disorder involves one DNA base pair alteration, producing HbS. The sickle-shaped cells form when deoxygenated in the capillaries. The resulting RBC stasis leads to ischemia and pain, and acute and chronic organ damage. Patients with SCD presenting to a dental office need careful examination to rule out any current infections, neurologic deficits, or other organ involvement before formulating a dental treatment plan to avoid prolonged and complicated procedures. Early int…

Percutaneous treatment of anomalous systemic artery to pulmonary venous fistulas in children: Description of three cases and review of the literature.

In the normal lung, the only communications between the systemic and pulmonary arterial systems are the connections between the bronchial and pulmonary arteries that occur at the respiratory bronchioles, where pulmonary and bronchial capillaries freely anastomose. Rarely, anomalous connections can occur between normal or aberrant systemic arteries and pulmonary vessels. We performed a comprehensive literature review of all available manuscripts on PubMed and Google Scholar that included a case report or case series with diagnosis of systemic artery to pulmonary venous fistulas who underwent pe…

Novelties in the evaluation of microcirculation in septic shock.

Microvascular alterations were first described in critically ill patients about 20 years ago. These alterations are characterized by a decrease in vascular density and presence of non-perfused capillaries close to well-perfused vessels. In addition, heterogeneity in microvascular perfusion is a key finding in sepsis. In this narrative review, we report our actual understanding of microvascular alterations, their role in the development of organ dysfunction, and the implications for outcome. Herein, we discuss the state of the potential therapeutic interventions and the potential impact of nove…

Endometrial Perivascular Progenitor Cells and Uterus Regeneration.

Ovarian steroid-regulated cyclical regeneration of the endometrium is crucial for endometrial receptivity and embryo implantation, and it is dependent on the dynamic remodeling of the endometrial vasculature. Perivascular cells, including pericytes surrounding capillaries and microvessels and adventitial cells located in the outermost layer of large vessels, show properties of mesenchymal stem cells, and they are thus promising candidates for uterine regeneration. In this review, we discuss the structure and functions of the endometrial blood vasculature and their roles in endometrial regenera…

The role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in neurosurgical disease.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a relatively new imaging modality in the realm of neurosurgical disease. CEUS permits the examination of blood flow through arteries, veins, and capillaries via intravascular contrast agents and allows vascular architectural mapping with extreme sensitivity and specificity. While it has established utility in other organ systems such as the liver and kidneys, CEUS has not been studied extensively in the brain. This report presents a review of the literature on the neurosurgical applications of CEUS and provides an outline of the imaging modality's role in…

Bilateral Otorrhagia after Robotically Assisted Gynecologic Surgery in the Setting of a Reduced Trendelenburg Position and Low-Pressure Pneumoperitoneum: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Perioperative otorrhagia in association with nonotolaryngologic surgery is rare. The cause is typically attributed to the physiologic derangements associated with the Trendelenburg position and pneumoperitoneum during laparoscopic surgery. The most well-accepted etiology is an increase in arterial and venous pressures causing the rupture of subcutaneous capillaries, although the exact etiology remains unclear. We present the first reported case of bilateral spontaneous otorrhagia associated with robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery involving a reduced Trendelenburg position and low-pressu…

Nailfold capillaroscopy in leprosy.

Due to mounting evidences of interaction between Hansen's bacilli with endothelial cells and the paucity of studies addressing the presence of nailfold capillaroscopic alterations in patients with Hansen's disease, a study was carried out in order to verify the presence of capillaroscopic alterations in patients with leprosy in its various forms and its correlation with clinical parameters. Ten patients were evaluated at a specialized university service. Sixty percent of those had some capillaroscopic change, such as micro-hemorrhages, ectatic, bushy and corkscrew capillaries. Such changes wer…

Naringin promotes fracture healing through stimulation of angiogenesis by regulating the VEGF/VEGFR-2 signaling pathway in osteoporotic rats.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is characterized by a reduction in the number of sinusoidal and arterial capillaries in the bone marrow and reduced bone perfusion. Thus, osteogenesis and angiogenesis are coupled in the process of osteoporosis formation and fracture healing. Naringin is the main ingredient of the root Rhizoma Drynariae, a traditional Chinese medicine, and it has potential effects on promoting fracture healing. However, whether naringin stimulates angiogenesis in the process of bone healing is unclear. Here, we show that naringin promotes fracture healing through stimulating angioge…

De novo membranous nephropathy in renal allograft associated with antibody-mediated rejection and review of the literature.

A 71-year-old woman with unknown renal failure etiology received living donor transplantation had normal graft function for many years. At 11 years from transplantation, she developed nephrotic syndrome. Allograft biopsy showed membranous nephropathy (MN) and C4d positivity in the peritubular capillaries, suggestive of antibody-mediated rejection. At the time of nephrosis onset, she had new donor-specific antibody positivity. The case is unusual in that the diagnosis of de novo MN is based on evidence that she had antibody-mediated rejection. De novo MN remains relatively uncommon; we have rev…

Non-muscle myosins and the podocyte.

Proteinuria is often accompanied by a pathological change in the glomerulus that is refereed as effacement of the podocyte foot processes. The highly dynamic podocyte foot processes contain an actin-based contractile apparatus comparable to that of pericytes, which needs to be precisely and temporally controlled to withstand high pressure in the capillaries and to maintain intact glomerular filtration properties. This review outlines the most recent concepts on the function of the podocyte contractile apparatus with a focus on the role of non-muscle myosins as they have been highlighted by stu…

Polypoid arteriovenous malformation in the jejunum of a child that mimics intussusception.

Polypoid arteriovenous malformations, which are localized in the colon, are extremely rare in adults, with only 7 cases published to date. Here we present the case of a 6-year-old girl with a jejunal polypoid tumor that a sonogram and a computed tomographic scan have shown to resemble intussusception. Histologically, numerous large ectatic veins intermixed with small-caliber arteries, venules, arterioles, and capillaries were observed in the intestinal wall. A retrospective computed tomographic scan 3-dimensional angiographic reconstruction demonstrated that this may be a diagnostic characteri…

Acroangiodermatitis of mali: a rare vascular phenomenon.

Acroangiodermatitis (synonym pseudo-Kaposi sarcoma) is an unusual, benign condition which clinically presents as purple-colored patches, plaques or nodules, mostly on the extensor surfaces of lower extremities in patients with chronic venous insufficiency and arteriovenous malformations. It resembles aggressive conditions like Kaposi's sarcoma and requires histopathological examination for its diagnosis. We report two such cases of acroangiodermatitis. Histopathology of both the cases showed dilated capillaries in the dermis with extravasated red blood corpuscles (RBCs), hemosiderin deposits, …
