The cerebellum in cognitive processes: supporting studies in children.

Over the last decade, increasing evidence of cognitive functions of the cerebellum during development and learning processes could be ascertained. Posterior fossa malformations such as cerebellar hypoplasia or Joubert syndrome are known to be related to developmental problems in a marked to moderate extent. More detailed analyses reveal special deficits in attention, processing speed, visuospatial functions and language. A study about Dandy Walker syndrome states a relationship of abnormalities in vermis lobulation with developmental problems. Further lobulation or volume abnormalities of the

Bridging appetite and emotional dynamics: the oxytocinergic system as a therapeutic axis in feeding and eating disorders.

Feeding and eating disorders represent some of the most devastating and paradoxical conditions in medicine, where the biological drive to survive collides with altered motivation, affect, and reward. Although neurobiological and metabolic research has substantially advanced our understanding of feeding and eating disorders, mechanism-driven therapeutic options remain limited. The oxytocinergic network has gained increasing attention for its dual capacity to regulate energy balance and socio-emotional processing. In this review, we systematically integrate preclinical and clinical evidence to p

A phenomenological representation of neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adolescents: A graphic organization.

Psychiatric nosology serves both clinical and research needs by providing a common language and informing healthcare planning. However, a movement toward transdiagnostic approaches is growing for assessments and care management of neurodevelopment disorders. During childhood and adolescence, symptoms appear as developmental delays. They often overlap across disorders, making the diagnosis difficult. To account for the multidimensional symptomatology, we propose a visualization of neurodevelopmental disorders phenomenology that would make it easier to analyze an individual as a network of diagn

Sleep and Cancer.

Background/Objectives: Sleep issues are common in the general population, and these problems occur even more frequently for people with cancer. Sleep problems may pre-exist a patient's cancer diagnosis, and there is a growing interest in understanding the impact of sleep on cancer development and progression. Sleep disorders may impact cancer through altered metabolism, impacts on immune response, and alterations in hormones and gene expression. Sleep disorders may also arise after, or be aggravated by, an individual's cancer and cancer treatment. Treating a person with cancer's sleep disorder

The 5-HT7 receptor system as a treatment target for mood and anxiety disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical animal and preliminary human studies indicate that 5-HT7 antagonists have the potential as a new treatment approach for mood and anxiety disorders. In this systematic review, we aimed to review the relationship between the 5-HT7 receptor system and mood and anxiety disorders, and to explore the pharmacology and therapeutic potential of medications that target the 5-HT7 receptor for their treatment. METHODS: Medline, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PsycINFO databases, the National Institute of Health website Clinicaltrials.gov, controlled-trials.com, and relevant grey literat

New Paradigms of Old Psychedelics in Schizophrenia.

Psychedelics such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin (magic mushrooms), and mescaline exhibit intense effects on the human brain and behaviour. In recent years, there has been a surge in studies investigating these drugs because clinical studies have shown that these once banned drugs are well tolerated and efficacious in medically supervised low doses called microdosing. Psychedelics have demonstrated efficacy in treating neuropsychiatric maladies such as difficult to treat anxiety, depression, mood disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, suicidal ideation, posttraumatic stres

Effects of Appearance- and Performance-Enhancing Drugs on Personality Traits.

Appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs (APEDs) are commonly used by adolescents and young adults in an effort to improve not only athletic performance but also physical and mental efficiency and sexual appearance. The rationale for using these drugs is grounded in the perceived importance of external appearance, the quest for health and youth, and the urge to boost one's sexual performances. Although APED users tend to be quite moderate overall, some specific subpopulations can display pathological use associated with high-risk behaviors. A wide and diverse range of APEDs is now easily ac

Effects of sulforaphane in the central nervous system.

Sulforaphane (SFN) is an active component extracted from vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli. Activation of the nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) signaling is a common mechanism for the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activity of some herb-derived compounds, such as icariin and berberine. However, due to its peculiar ability in Nrf2 activation, SFN is recognized as an activator of Nrf2 and recommended as a supplementation for prevention and/or treatment of disorders like neoplasm and heart failure. In the central nervous system (CNS), the prophylactic and/or therapeu

[Socioemotional disorders in children living in Konzo-affected areas, an epidemic paralytic disease associated with cyanide poisoning from food in sub-Saharan Africa].

INTRODUCTION: the aim of this study was to describe the socioemotional profile of children living in Konzo-affected areas, an epidemic toxico-nutritional palsy in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: we evaluated the socioemotional profile of 210 children, 123 with Konzo and 87 presumed to be healthy (4-17 years) based on a structured interview conducted with their parents during an epidemioclinic survey of Konzo in Congo-Kinshasa in 2011. Neurocognitive profile was identified by the KABC-II, the BOT-2 and the global neurological symptom index of Konzo. Associative tests were carried out by using chi

Longitudinal perspectives on the psychosis spectrum in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

The prevalence of psychotic disorders in individuals with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11DS) reaches 25-35% in young adulthood and may provide a neurogenetic model for clinical risk of psychotic disorders in the general population. This review focuses on prospective longitudinal studies in 22q11DS, which capture fluctuations in psychosis symptoms over time and may provide insights into potential demographic, clinical, cognitive, and neuroimaging predictors of psychosis-spectrum outcomes in the general population. Findings are compared and contrasted with those from idiopathic psychosis-spectr

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of citicoline for bipolar and unipolar depression and methamphetamine dependence.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use disorders are common and severe problems. Persons with mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorder, have high rates of substance use disorders. We previously reported promising findings on drug use, memory and study retention in patients with a history of mania and cocaine dependence given the nutritional supplement citicoline. In the current proof-of-concept study, we examined citicoline in bipolar or unipolar depression and methamphetamine dependence. METHODS: Sixty adults with bipolar depression or major depressive disorder and methamphetamine dependence w

Emerging control and disruptive behavior disorders during early childhood.

The current study evaluates associations between control processes and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during early childhood. Participants were 98 children between ages 3 and 6 and their primary caregivers. Diagnostic information on ODD and ADHD symptoms was available from parents and teachers/caregivers via standardized rating forms. Affective, effortful, and cognitive control processes were measured using parent and examiner ratings via standardized questionnaires, observational ratings, and child performance on laboratory tasks of cog

Cognitive and behavioral therapies for pathological gambling.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of behavioral and cognitive treatment approaches in the management of pathological gambling disorders. Disappointingly, the literature to date contains only one controlled outcome study in which two differing behavioral techniques were compared. Although research in general has focussed on identifying the nature of cognitive distortions in gambling, findings from these studies have not been systematically translated into treatment programs. It is concluded that methodological limitations including small sample size, absence of control groups,

Epilepsy, Cognitive, and Behavioral Outcomes in Neurocutaneous Syndromes: A Comparative Review of NF1, TSC, and Sturge-Weber Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Neurocutaneous syndromes (NCS), including neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), and Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), are rare neurodevelopmental disorders frequently associated with epilepsy, cognitive impairment, and behavioural difficulties. Although caused by different genetic alterations, these disorders share biological mechanisms that influence brain development, neuronal connectivity, and network excitability. Beyond being a common neurological manifestation, epilepsy is increasingly recognized as an important factor influencing cognitive and behaviou

Catastrophic cognitions about coronavirus: the Oxford psychological investigation of coronavirus questionnaire [TOPIC-Q].

BACKGROUND: Cognitive therapies are developed on the principle that specific cognitive appraisals are key determinants in the development and maintenance of mental health disorders. It is likely that particular appraisals of the coronavirus pandemic will have explanatory power for subsequent mental health outcomes in the general public. To enable testing of this hypothesis we developed a questionnaire assessing coronavirus-related cognitions. METHODS: 12 285 participants completed online a 46-item pool of cognitions about coronavirus and six measures of different mental health problems. The s

[Relationship between mental and physical disorders in old age and senility.].

In order to identify the relationship between mental and physical disorders in the elderly and senile age, 70 patients were examined in one of the clinics in Arkhangelsk, including 56 (80%) persons aged 60-74 years and 14 (20%) people aged 75 years and older. A questionnaire was conducted, data from outpatient records were studied, and the clinical status assessment was used, as well as methods for determining mental and physical condition. The most frequent mental and physical disorders were the cognitive and depressive disorders presence, a high risk of malnutrition syndrome, sarcopenia and

Examining the symptom-level specificity of negative problem orientation in a clinical sample.

Given the equivocal state of the literature as to the symptom-level specificity of the cognitive variable labeled negative problem orientation (NPO), we targeted NPO-symptom relations. A clinical sample (N = 132) of adults diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, mood disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder completed self-reports of NPO and symptom types (worry, depression, obsessive-compulsive, panic, and social anxiety). Symptom-level specificity was examined using a combination of zero-order and regression analyses that controlled for the other assessed symptoms. Results were that NPO shared

Sleep problems in children with neurological disorders.

This review describes the complex and often reciprocal relationship between sleep problems, neurological disorders and/or intellectual disability in children. The causes of Intellectual disability (ID) discussed in this review include those conditions present from or around the time of birth, although it also considers traumatic brain injuries occurring later in development. This review discusses the patterns of sleep difficulty associated with specific disorders and summarizes the assessment and interventions, both behavioural and pharmacological, applicable to children. Many neurological dis

Associations Between Schizophrenia Polygenic Liability, Symptom Dimensions, and Cognitive Ability in Schizophrenia.

IMPORTANCE: Schizophrenia is a clinically heterogeneous disorder. It is currently unclear how variability in symptom dimensions and cognitive ability is associated with genetic liability for schizophrenia. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether phenotypic dimensions within schizophrenia are associated with genetic liability to schizophrenia, other neuropsychiatric disorders, and intelligence. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In a genetic association study, 3 cross-sectional samples of 1220 individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were recruited from community, inpatient, and voluntary sector

Increasing Educator Resources for Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Using a Knowledge-to-Action Framework: The Development of DementiaBank Grand Rounds.

PURPOSE: An educational gap exists in content knowledge and clinical education for speech-language pathologists concerning the treatment and assessment of cognitive-communication disorders from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). This gap may result in less effective speech-language pathology services for this population. The overarching goal of this project was to enhance graduate speech-language pathology education about MCI and dementia due to AD to improve the quality of future service providers. METHOD: To achieve this goal, this project had two o
