Feasibility and implementation insights from implementing the health navigator model for cancer prevention among people experiencing homelessness across Europe.

Cancer-related mortality among People Experiencing Homelessness (PEH) is twice as high as in the housed population, with one-third of deaths in this community linked to conditions preventable through timely healthcare. The Health Navigator Model (HNM) is a person-centred approach to improve healthcare access for PEH. This study assessed the feasibility of implementing the HNM across four European countries. A non-randomised, single-arm pilot study was conducted from June 2022 to December 2023 in Austria, Spain, Greece, and the UK. Trained Health Navigators supported adult PEH-excluding those w

Understanding How Negative Emotions Affect Hazard Assessment Abilities in Construction: Insights from Wearable EEG and the Moderating Role of Psychological Capital.

Background: The construction industry faces significant safety hazards, frequent accidents, and inadequate management. Studies identify unsafe worker behaviors as the primary cause of construction accidents. However, most research overlooks the psychological state, particularly emotions, of construction workers. Methods: This study designed a behavioral experiment integrating social cognitive neuroscience, collecting real-time EEG data to classify and recognize fear, anger, and neutral emotions. Variance analysis explored differences in safety hazard identification and risk assessment under th

Video-Based Assessment and Prediction of Surgical Outcomes in Sleeve Gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Surgical complications impact quality of life and escalate healthcare costs. Intraoperative performance, accounting for 40% to 60% of adverse events, is often judged through visual cues. The accuracy of this in predicting postoperative outcomes remains underexplored. We sought to assess surgeon accuracy in predicting outcomes from robotic sleeve gastrectomy (RSG) videos. STUDY DESIGN: Fellowship-trained surgeons reviewed RSG clips collected from a high-volume tertiary bariatric center. Twenty-five cases were chosen: 13 with complications and 12 without. Surgeons predicted which ca

PDualNet: a deep learning framework for joint prediction of Parkinson's disease progression subtype and MDS-UPDRS scores.

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common and complex neurodegenerative diseases, characterized by remarkable motor and cognitive decline. As it is a highly heterogeneous disorder, i.e., the specific symptoms, their severity, and their progression rate manifest significant interpersonal variability, multiple progression subtypes can be defined. The identification and prediction of these subtypes is crucial for understanding the disease's state and future trajectory, advancing prognostic accuracy and personalized treatment planning. At the same time, the ability to predict future MDS-UPDRS

Reproducible Sex Differences in Personalized Functional Network Topography in Youth.

BACKGROUND: A key step towards understanding psychiatric disorders that disproportionately impact female mental health is delineating the emergence of sex-specific patterns of brain organization at the critical transition from childhood to adolescence. Prior work suggests that individual differences in the spatial organization of functional brain networks across the cortex are associated with psychopathology and differ systematically by sex. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the impact of sex on the spatial organization of person-specific functional brain networks. METHOD: We leveraged person-speci

Machine Learning for the Prediction of Amyloid Positivity in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid-β (Aβ) evaluation in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients is important for predicting conversion to Alzheimer's disease. However, Aβ evaluation through Aβ positron emission tomography (PET) is limited due to high cost and safety issues. OBJECTIVE: We therefore aimed to develop and validate prediction models of Aβ positivity for aMCI using optimal interpretable machine learning (ML) approaches utilizing multimodal markers. METHODS: We recruited 529 aMCI patients from multiple centers who underwent Aβ PET. We trained ML algorithms using a training cohort (324

Individual and neighborhood characteristics associated with neighborhood walking among US older adults.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood walking connotes physical activity and opportunities for social and cognitive engagement and improved mental health, factors previously associated with outcomes including mortality, cardiovascular disease, and dementia. Few studies have examined correlates of neighborhood-specific walking in older adults. PURPOSE: We investigated the individual and neighborhood/regional correlates of neighborhood-based walking among US older adults. METHODS: We obtained cross-sectional data on ≥ 65 year olds from the population-based 2017 National Household Travel Survey (n = 73,523)

Neuropsychosocial markers of binge drinking in young adults.

Binge drinking is associated with disease and death, and developing tools to identify risky drinkers could mitigate its damage. Brain processes underlie risky drinking, so we examined whether neural and psychosocial markers could identify binge drinkers. Reward is the most widely studied neural process in addiction, but processes such as emotion, social cognition, and self-regulation are also involved. Here we examined whether neural processes apart from reward contribute to predicting risky drinking behaviors. From the Human Connectome Project, we identified 177 young adults who binged weekly

Auditory cognition and perception of action video game players.

A training method to improve speech hearing in noise has proven elusive, with most methods failing to transfer to untrained tasks. One common approach to identify potentially viable training paradigms is to make use of cross-sectional designs. For instance, the consistent finding that people who chose to avidly engage with action video games as part of their normal life also show enhanced performance on non-game visual tasks has been used as a foundation to test the causal impact of such game play via true experiments (e.g., in more translational designs). However, little work has examined the

Development and internal validation of a depression severity prediction model for tinnitus patients based on questionnaire responses and socio-demographics.

Tinnitus is a complex condition that is associated with major psychological and economic impairments - partly through various comorbidities such as depression. Understanding the interaction between tinnitus and depression may thus improve either symptom cluster's prevention, diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we developed and validated a machine learning model to predict depression severity after outpatient therapy (T1) based on variables obtained before therapy (T0). 1,490 patients with chronic tinnitus (comorbid major depressive disorder: 52.2%) who completed a 7-day multimodal treatmen

Rating early child development outcome measurement tools for routine health programme use.

BACKGROUND: Identification of children at risk of developmental delay and/or impairment requires valid measurement of early child development (ECD). We systematically assess ECD measurement tools for accuracy and feasibility for use in routine services in low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC). METHODS: Building on World Bank and peer-reviewed literature reviews, we identified available ECD measurement tools for children aged 0-3 years used in ≥1 LMIC and matrixed these according to when (child age) and what (ECD domains) they measure at population or individual level. Tools measuring

New learning of music after bilateral medial temporal lobe damage: evidence from an amnesic patient.

Damage to the hippocampus impairs the ability to acquire new declarative memories, but not the ability to learn simple motor tasks. An unresolved question is whether hippocampal damage affects learning for music performance, which requires motor processes, but in a cognitively complex context. We studied learning of novel musical pieces by sight-reading in a newly identified amnesic, LSJ, who was a skilled amateur violist prior to contracting herpes simplex encephalitis. LSJ has suffered virtually complete destruction of the hippocampus bilaterally, as well as extensive damage to other medial

Cortical activation during cocaine use and extinction in rhesus monkeys.

RATIONALE: Acute re-exposure to cocaine or drug cues associated with cocaine use can elicit drug craving and relapse. Neuroimaging studies have begun to define neurobiological substrates underlying the acute effects of cocaine or cocaine cues in cocaine-dependent subjects. OBJECTIVE: The present study was the first to use functional brain imaging to document acute cocaine-induced changes in brain activity during active drug use in nonhuman primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Positron emission tomography imaging with O15-labeled water was used to measure drug-induced changes in cerebral blood fl

Laparoscopic bile duct injury: understanding the psychology and heuristics of the error.

Bile duct injury is an important unsolved problem of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, occurring with unacceptable frequency even in the hands of experienced surgeons. This suggests that a systemic predisposition to the injury is intrinsic to cholecystectomy and indicates that an analysis of the psychology and heuristics of surgical decision-making in relation to duct identification may be a guide to prevention. Review of published reports on laparoscopic bile duct injury from 1997 to 2007 was carried out. An analysis was also carried out of the circumstances of the injuries in 49 patients who had

Bidirectional modulation of basal forebrain N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor function differentially affects visual attention but not visual discrimination performance.

Basal forebrain neuronal circuits, specifically the corticopetal cholinergic system, mediate attentional abilities. The effects of infusions of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and the competitive NMDA receptor antagonist DL-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid (APV) into the basal forebrain were assessed in rats trained in an operant task designed to generate measures of sustained attention performance. Control animals were trained in a cued visual discrimination task devoid of explicit demands on attentional performance, but involving similar basic operant components as the sustained attention task. The impact of an emotional self-management skills course on psychosocial functioning and autonomic recovery to stress in middle school children.

Unmanaged emotional reactions to stress not only lead to behavior problems in young people but also create physiological conditions that inhibit learning and potentially increase the risk of disease later in life. For these reasons, the integration of emotional self-management skills training programs has become an increased priority in some schools. In this study, middle school students enrolled in a course in emotional competence skills learned techniques designed to intercept stressful responses during emotionally challenging situations. Behavioral outcomes were assessed using the Achieveme

Brain-computer interfaces in pediatric populations: research advances, application challenges, and future directions.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) establish direct communication pathways between the brain and external devices. Leveraging the unique neuroplasticity of the developing brain, BCIs have emerged as a novel rehabilitative technology for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and perinatal brain injury. This review comprehensively examines five major BCI paradigms-P300, motor imagery (MI), steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and

Chronic Mild Circadian Disruption Alters Anxiety-Like Behavior and Spatial Navigation in Adult Mice.

Sleep and circadian disruption adversely impacts mental health and physiology. Such disruption varies in degree and emerges from numerous causes, ranging from severe disruption arising from rotating shift work or frequent jetlag to more mild circadian stress experienced by people with circadian rhythm sleep disorders (CRSD). While the effects of extreme circadian disruption such as jetlag are established through animal studies, less is understood about more subtle mismatches between external zeitgeber cycles and internal circadian periods as is observed with CRSDs. The present study employed a
