Systematic adaptation of a visual-aided adolescent nutrition intervention from peri-urban Burkina Faso for rural Uganda using intervention mapping.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 10–24 years in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including rural Uganda, frequently exhibit low nutrition literacy and poor diet quality, increasing their risk of malnutrition and diet-related non-communicable diseases. Many nutrition interventions are developed in high-income or school-based settings, limiting their relevance for low-income, rural, and out-of-school populations. Context-specific, community-anchored interventions deliverable through existing community health systems remain scarce. This study systematically adapted an adolescent nutr

Laparoscopic bariatric surgery versus any non-surgical intervention for adolescents or adults with obesity: protocol for a systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis of randomised clinical trials.

INTRODUCTION: The number of people living with obesity is increasing rapidly worldwide, and the WHO estimates approximately 5 million deaths yearly from non-communicable diseases related to elevated body mass index (BMI). The most effective treatment for weight loss is bariatric surgery, but due to the associated risks and the need for lifelong care, this is not a viable treatment for every patient. With the advent of gut-hormone-based medications to treat obesity, the effectiveness of non-surgical treatment is approaching that of surgical interventions. We therefore aim to investigate the ben

Poor maternal health outcomes and associated factors among women undergoing cesarean section in Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cesarean section is the most commonly performed major surgical procedure in obstetrics and gynecology worldwide. Despite advancements in surgical techniques, cesarean section is still associated with higher maternal morbidity and mortality compared to vaginal delivery. Adverse maternal outcomes following cesarean section includes hemorrhage, infections, hysterectomy, uterine rupture, and pronged hospital stay. However, studies on maternal health outcomes following cesarean section are yet well studied in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess poor maternal health outcomes

Air quality and attributable mortality among city dwellers in Kampala, Uganda: results from 4 years of continuous PM2.5 concentration monitoring using BAM 1022 reference instrument.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a known risk factor for non-communicable diseases that causes substantial premature death globally. Rapid urban growth, burning of biomass and solid waste, unpaved sections of the road network, rising numbers of vehicles, some with highly polluting engines, contribute to the poor air quality in Kampala. OBJECTIVE: To provide evidence-based estimates of air pollution attributable mortality in Kampala city, with focus on ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5). METHODS: We utilized a time series design and prospectively collected data on daily ambient PM2.5 concent

Health-related quality of life and associated factors in adults living with HIV in Rwanda.

In Rwanda, as in other sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, life expectancy of people living with HIV (PLWH) has increased dramatically as a result of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). People living with HIV can now live longer but with increasing rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Thus, prevention of NCD comorbidities in PWLHI is crucial to maintain and gain health-related benefits and to maximise the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in the long-term management of PLWH. This study determines the association between physical and mental health-related dimensions of quality o

Patterns of cross-sectional and predictive physical activity in Swiss adults aged 52+: results from the SAPALDIA cohort.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for the vast majority of deaths in Switzerland. Insufficient physical activity (PA) is an established NCD risk factor and PA is known to be beneficial for physical and mental wellbeing. Sedentary behaviour (SB) is an additional, independent risk factor and associated with frailty in older adults. This study aimed at describing cross-sectional PA patterns in a general population sample of subjects aged 52 years and older (52+) from eight areas across different language regions of Switzerland. Additionally, the predictive association of self-r

Maternal Vitamin D Status and Infant Infection.

Maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy may modulate fetal immune system development and infant susceptibility to infections. Vitamin D deficiency is common during pregnancy, particularly among African American (AA) women. Our objective was to compare maternal vitamin D status (plasma 25(OH)D concentration) during pregnancy and first-year infections in the offspring of African American (AA) and non-AA women. We used medical records to record frequency and type of infections during the first year of life of 220 term infants (69 AA, 151 non-AA) whose mothers participated in the Kansas Univers

Risk factors for the expansion of cutaneous leishmaniasis by Leishmania tropica: Possible implications for control programmes.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania tropica is emerging in new areas, initially as outbreaks and then establishing endemic foci. There is little evidence of the risk factors and effectiveness of existing control measures, what limits our ability to generalize in different epidemiological settings. The disease is described as anthroponotic; however, zoonotic outbreaks have been reported in some countries. Our aim was to identify risk factors in a recently reported endemic focus in Morocco in order to design more effective control programmes. A case-control study was conducted from

Newborn Infection Control and Care Initiative for health facilities to accelerate reduction of newborn mortality (NICCI): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Newborn health is a key issue in addressing the survival of children under five years old, particularly in low and middle income countries, and the evidence base for newborn health interventions continues to evolve. Over the last decade, maternal and under five-year-old mortality and morbidity rates have been successfully reduced in Cambodia, but newborn health has lagged behind. Evidence suggests that an important proportion of newborn mortality both globally and in Cambodia is attributable to infections and sepsis. While initiatives are being implemented to address some causes of

Efficacy and effectiveness of infant vaccination against chronic hepatitis B in the Gambia Hepatitis Intervention Study (1986-90) and in the nationwide immunisation program.

BACKGROUND: Gambian infants were not routinely vaccinated against hepatitis B virus (HBV) before 1986. During 1986-90 the Gambia Hepatitis Intervention Study (GHIS) allocated 125,000 infants, by area, to vaccination or not and thereafter all infants were offered the vaccine through the nationwide immunisation programme. We report HBV serology from samples of GHIS vaccinees and unvaccinated controls, and from children born later. METHODS: During 2007-08, 2670 young adults born during the GHIS (1986-90) were recruited from 80 randomly selected villages and four townships. Only 28% (753/2670) co

[Technological evolutions in blood donation screening and their impact on the residual risk].

During the two last decades, the risk of viral transfusion transmission for some infectious agents (HIV, HCV, HBV and HTLV) has been markedly reduced by improved donor screening, improvements of serological assays and the implementation of minipool nucleic acid testing for HIV-1 and HCV viruses. However, implementation during the year 2010 of nucleic acid testing for the detection of HIV RNA, HCV RNA and HBV DNA in a single triplex assay may provide additional safety, especially after acute infection during the window period. The effect of a social network-based intervention to promote HIV testing and linkage to HIV services among fishermen in Kenya: a cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, highly mobile men such as fishermen have a low uptake of HIV testing, prevention, and treatment. This study aimed to examine whether a HIV status-neutral, social network-based intervention could improve testing and linkage to prevention and treatment among fishermen in Kenya. METHODS: The Owete cluster-randomised trial mapped the male social networks of fishermen in three communities along Lake Victoria in Siaya County, Kenya, and identified distinct social networks (clusters) with a highly connected, network-central man (promoter) in each network. Burden of pulmonary tuberculosis among Ethiopians seeking jobs in the Middle East: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, pre-and post-migration TB screening are integral to controlling TB among migrants. Annually, approximately 300,000 Ethiopians migrate to the Middle East in search of job opportunities. But prior to their trip the migrants are randomly distributed by Wafid to 12 authorized clinics in Addis Ababa, for pre-migration medical screening for communicable diseases including Tuberculosis (TB), which is one of the main concerns and screened using chest X-ray (CXR). Based on the screening results, the job seekers are classified as Fit or Unfit to travel to the Middle East. This stud

Magnitude of metabolic syndrome in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia: A community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is becoming a major public health problem globally; it is clear that the burden of MetS is rapidly increasing the rates of non-communicable diseases (NCD). In Ethiopia studies done so far have shown a large disparity in magnitude of the prevalence of MetS and were mainly institution-based studies. Therefore, this study assess the prevalence of MetS among adults who are residing in Gondar city using Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) assessment tool. The findings are imperative to developing and strengthening

Selective Caries Removal in Permanent Teeth (SCRiPT) for the treatment of deep carious lesions: a randomised controlled clinical trial in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent non-communicable disease globally and can have serious health sequelae impacting negatively on quality of life. In the UK most adults experience dental caries during their lifetime and the 2009 Adult Dental Health Survey reported that 85% of adults have at least one dental restoration. Conservative removal of tooth tissue for both primary and secondary caries reduces the risk of failure due to tooth-restoration, complex fracture as well as remaining tooth surfaces being less vulnerable to further caries. However, despite its prevalence the
