Factors associated with palliative care symptoms in cancer patients in Palestine.

Palliative care is critical to redundancy in cancer patients seeking to improve their quality of life. Evaluation should be incorporated into clinical practice routines at all stages of cancer. The Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) was used to rate the intensity of ten symptom evaluations designed and validated for cancer patients in various languages and cultures. Therefore, the study aims to assess the symptoms reported using ESAS scores to identify patients who would benefit from palliative care that can improve the integration of palliative care into standard cancer care at An-Naja

Cultural Adaptation of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 in Hindi for Use with Patients with Cancer in Community Palliative Care Settings.

ObjectivesPatient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in Indian settings is yet not very often used in palliative care with the Hindi-speaking population. The Hindi version of PHQ-9 is available but its cultural adaptation to the Hindi-speaking population in North India receiving palliative care services is required to be tested. PHQ-9 as a depression screening questionnaire may help to identify depression symptoms among patients with cancer. This study aimed to examine the cultural equivalence of PHQ-9 Hindi for use with patients with cancer receiving palliative care services in North India.Materi

Development of an adult neurofibromatosis clinic in the comprehensive cancer center setting and descriptive analysis of the first 100 patients with neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 is a multisystem genetic disorder that most commonly presents with dermatologic manifestations, while also involving the central and peripheral nervous systems. Additional features may include orthopedic, ophthalmologic, and cardiovascular abnormalities, and the condition is further associated with an increased risk of malignancy. Typically, patients receive multidisciplinary care in the setting of a large tertiary-care academic institution within the pediatric department. Here, we describe the development of an adult program housed within a National Cancer

Cultural adaptation and validation of the Sinhala version of the spiritual needs assessment for patients (S-SNAP) questionnaire.

BackgroundSpiritual support for patients and caregivers of critically ill patients is associated with improved quality of life. This aspect, however, is not incorporated into the current care pathways in Sri Lanka. The Spiritual Needs Assessment for Patients (SNAP) questionnaire, comprised of 3 domains: psychosocial, spiritual and religious, gives a platform for clinicians to assess the spiritual needs of those patients. This study presents the results of validation of the Sinhala version of the SNAP (S-SNAP) questionnaire.MethodsThe SNAP was translated from English to Sinhala using the standa

Disparities in care of older adults of color with cancer: A narrative review.

This review describes the barriers and challenges faced by older adults of color with cancer and highlights methods to improve their overall care. In the next decade, cancer incidence rates are expected to increase in the United States for people aged ≥65 years. A large proportion will be older adults of color who often have worse outcomes than older White patients. Many issues contribute to racial disparities in older adults, including biological factors and social determinants of health (SDOH) related to healthcare access, socioeconomic concerns, systemic racism, mistrust, and the neighborho

Early, Patient-Centered, and Multidisciplinary Approach in Newly Diagnosed Multiple Myeloma: What Are We Talking About? A Case Description and Discussion.

Specialized palliative care (SPC) is a multidisciplinary need-based approach from the time a life-threatening disease is diagnosed. Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) will, at the time of diagnosis, often present with symptoms and needs that require a multidisciplinary approach. This case describes the course of a patient with newly diagnosed MM, involving all vertebrae and with no common analgesic treatment providing sufficient relief. High symptom burden and psychosocial and existential factors contribute to his total suffering. SPC, anesthesiological, and radio-oncological disciplines are

Palliative care follow-up for cancer patients combining day-hospital visits and telemedicine: What feasibility?

BackgroundDue to the increasing life expectancy of patients with cancer, palliative care services are increasingly solicited to provide follow-up for individuals living at home. The implementation of teleconsultations represents a potential solution to extend access to palliative care follow-up to a larger number of patients. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the a priori acceptance of teleconsultations among all patients admitted to palliative care, as well as the feasibility of their implementation. We therefore initially explored whether a specific patient profile might limit acceptan

A multidisciplinary perspective on the complex interactions between sleep, circadian, and metabolic disruption in cancer patients.

Sleep is a basic need that is frequently set aside in modern societies. This leads to profound but complex physiological maladaptations in the body commonly referred to as circadian disruption, which recently has been characterized as a carcinogenic factor and reason for poor treatment outcomes, shortened survival, and reduced quality of life in cancer patients. As sleep and circadian physiology in cancer patients spans several disciplines including nursing science, neurology, oncology, molecular biology and medical technology, there is a lack of comprehensive and integrated approaches to deal

Current Perspectives of the Applications of Polyphenols and Flavonoids in Cancer Therapy.

The development of anticancer therapies that involve natural drugs has undergone exponential growth in recent years. Among the natural compounds that produce beneficial effects on human health, polyphenols have shown potential therapeutic applications in cancer due to their protective functions in plants, their use as food additives, and their excellent antioxidant properties. The possibility of combining conventional drugs-which are usually more aggressive than natural compounds-with polyphenols offers very valuable advantages such as the building of more efficient anticancer therapies with l

Revolutionizing the treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer: the impact, challenges and strategies of stem cell and genetically engineered cell therapies.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinct malignancy of the nasopharynx and is consistently associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Its unique anatomical location and complex aetiology often result in advanced-stage disease at first diagnosis. While radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy have been the mainstays of treatment, they often fail to prevent tumour recurrence and metastasis, leading to high rates of treatment failure and mortality. Recent advancement in cell-based therapies, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, have shown great promise in hematologic
