Comparative Analysis of Surgical Stabilization of Traumatic Rib Fractures in Patients With Morbid Obesity: A Retrospective Review of the Nationwide Readmissions Database.

BackgroundThe effectiveness of surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) in patients with obesity is unknown.MethodsThe Nationwide Readmissions Database 2015-2019 was used to identify adult patients with obesity and rib fractures (RF). The outcomes of those with Obesity who underwent SSRF were compared to non-operative management (NOM) and also to non-obese participants who underwent SSRF. Patient demographics and outcomes were characterized with univariate, multivariate, and inverse-propensity score (IWPS) analyses adjusting for confounding variables and selection bias. Primary outcomes

Renalism: an obstacle to left heart catheterization in chronic kidney disease patients.

BACKGROUND: "Renalism" is a term defining the therapeutic nihilism that leads to patients with kidney disease waiting longer for effective interventions to reach them; in this context is also inscribed the reluctance of clinicians to conduct contrast-based studies such as left heart catheterization on individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) often requires left heart catheterization, and delay can lead to increased mortality and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample Database 2016-2018 was used to sample pa

Trends in the burden of low back pain attributable to occupational ergonomic factors among the global population aged 15-64 years (1990-2021): a study based on the GBD database.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a major public health concern among the global working-age population and is closely associated with occupational ergonomic factors (OEF). However, comprehensive evidence on the global and regional burden of LBP attributable to OEF, as well as its long-term temporal trends in the working population, remains limited. Therefore, a systematic assessment of the burden and trends of OEF-related LBP is essential for informing occupational health policies and preventive strategies. METHODS: This study used the GBD 2021 database to analyze the Disability-Adjusted Li

Surgical management of urolithiasis in france from 2016 to 2022: epidemiological data from the national PMSI database.

PURPOSE: The incidence of urolithiasis is rising in France, with a prevalence approaching 10% in the general population. Over the past decades, minimally invasive endourological techniques have profoundly transformed surgical management. Although current guidelines recommend extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), ureteroscopy (URS), and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) based on stone and patient characteristics, little is known about their nationwide use. This study aimed to describe recent trends in the surgical management of upper urinary tract stones in France. METHODS: Data from

Temporal trends in mortality involving chronic lower respiratory disease and chronic kidney disease: evidence from CDC WONDER, 1999-2023.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease (CLRD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are comorbid progressive diseases that have, over the decades, significantly contributed to high mortality rates. The overlapping mechanisms are aggravated by their coexistence, thus resulting in a poorer prognosis. The purpose of the study is to examine countrywide mortality rates related to CLRD and CKD and to identify the disparities among various population groups. METHODS: The CDC WONDER database was used to discuss age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) of CLRD among patients with chronic kidney disease

Impact of a comprehensive healthy lifestyle score on a broad spectrum of cardiometabolic and related diseases and its incremental value for risk prediction based on the UK biobank database.

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic and related diseases (CMDs) represent a major global disease burden. While traditional risk factors are well-established, the role of lifestyle factors in primary prevention has not been sufficiently studied. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 148,155 participants in the UK Biobank without baseline CMDs. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the impact of healthy lifestyle factors (non-current smoking, non-excessive drinking, regular physical activity, healthy diet, and healthy sleep) on 11 types of CMDs (coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, a

Association between renal replacement therapy and in-hospital mortality in patients with severe acute kidney injury: a retrospective cohort study based on MIMIC-IV database.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs frequently in intensive care unit (ICU) settings and correlates strongly with adverse patient outcomes. Whether renal replacement therapy (RRT) can effectively improve mortality outcomes in these patients remains controversial, primarily due to interference from confounding by indication. Within nephrology and critical-care practice, identifying which severe-AKI subgroups derive a survival benefit from RRT is a question of direct bedside relevance, and observational analyses with rigorous bias control are particularly informative when balance

Effectiveness of Amenamevir Vs. Valacyclovir in Preventing Herpes Zoster-Related Hospitalization and Complications: A Target Trial Emulation Using a Large Japanese Claims Database.

Amenamevir is a novel anti-herpes zoster drug that is increasingly used in Japan because of its once-daily administration and lack of renal dose adjustment requirements. However, evidence of its clinical effectiveness is limited. This study aimed to estimate the clinical effectiveness of amenamevir vs. valacyclovir in preventing zoster-related hospitalizations and complications. Using a nationally representative claims database from 2017 to 2024, we conducted a retrospective cohort study with a new-user, active-comparator design. We included adults (aged ≥ 18 years) with uncomplicated herpes z

Decreased Life Expectancy in Patients with Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Population-based data on the life expectancy and mortality for acute (AP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) in the United States are limited. This study evaluates the life expectancy, mortality rates and the cause of death in AP and CP patients. METHODS: Using the nationwide Veterans Administration database from 1999 to 2015, we identified AP and CP patients (using ICD-9 codes) and non-pancreatitis patients (controls). Age at the time of death was used as a surrogate indicator of life expectancy. Life expectancy in AP and CP patients was compared with the controls, using Cox-

A Graph-Based Multimodal Fusion Framework for Assessment of Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease.

Freezing of Gait (FOG) is a significant symptom contributing to gait dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Most current methods for assessing FOG severity often overlook the interpretability of the extracted gait features. In this study, we design a multimodal gait feature dataset with rich physical significance, including kinematics, kinetics, and spatiotemporal modalities. We also propose a graph-based multimodal fusion framework (GMFF) to accurately quantify FOG severity. GMFF employs the graph attention mechanism to extract modality-specific features and utilizes the generalize
