[Neuronal organization of field 4 of the motor cortex of the cat brain].

By means of the silver nitrate impregnation method after Golgi-Kopsch in kittens and young cats the field 4 in the cerebral motor cortex has been studied. The motor cortex of the field 4 possesses certain heteromorphism. Besides usual stellate and pyramidal neurons, that differ from real ones by some morphological signs: their body is often round, the apical dendrite is much thinner than the corresponding dendrite of a pyramidal neuron, it does not produce oblique branches along the course, never gets into the I layer, the spines arrange less densely. According to the mode of dendrites setting…

Novel role of SARM1 mediated axonal degeneration in the pathogenesis of rabies.

Neurotropic viral infections continue to pose a serious threat to human and animal wellbeing. Host responses combatting the invading virus i … tudy, we show that neurons activate selective and compartmentalized degeneration of their axons and dendrites in response to infection with different field strains of lyssavirus. We further show that this axonal degeneration is mediated by the loss of NAD and calpain-mediated digestion of key structural proteins such as MAP2 and neurofilament. We then analy …

Substance P NK1 receptor in the rat corpus callosum during postnatal development.

INTRODUCTION: The expression of substance P (SP) receptor (neurokinin 1, NK1) was studied in the rat corpus callosum (cc) from postnatal day … aching the midline. At P5, intracallosal NK1IP-n had a predominantly round cell bodies with primary dendrites of different thickness from which originated thinner secondary branches. Between P10 and P15, dendrites were longer and more thickly branched, and displayed several varicosities as well as short, thin appendages. Between P20 and P30, NK1IP-n were qu …

Abnormal climbing fibre-Purkinje cell synaptic connections in the essential tremor cerebellum.

Structural changes in Purkinje cells have been identified in the essential tremor cerebellum, although the mechanisms that underlie these changes remain poorly understood. Climbing fibres provide one of the major excitatory inputs to Purkinje cells, and climbing fibre-Purkinje cell connections are essential for normal cerebellar-mediated motor control. The distribution of climbing fibre-Purkinje cell synapses on Purkinje cell dendrites is dynamically regulated and may be altered in disease states. The aim of the present study was to examine the density and distribution of climbing fibre-Purkin…

Contrasting distribution of physiological cell types in different regions of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis.

We characterized the electroresponsive and morphological properties of neurons in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). Previously … ly related to particular physiological phenotypes. One neuronal class had highly branched and spiny dendrites; the second had longer but poorly branched and sparsely spiny dendrites. Both often exhibited dendritic varicosities. Since LTB cells prevail in BNST, it will be important to determine what inputs set their firing mode (tonic vs. bursting) and in wh …

Two populations of neurokinin 1 receptor-expressing projection neurons in lamina I of the rat spinal cord that differ in AMPA receptor subunit composition and density of excitatory synaptic input.

Lamina I of the spinal cord contains many projection neurons that express the neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1r). It has been reported that these … ay not differ in the types of noxious stimulus that activate them. Glutamatergic synapses on distal dendrites of the large cells were significantly longer than those on proximal dendrites, which presumably compensates for the greater attenuation of distally-generated excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs). Both types of cell received contacts from peptide …

Structural abnormalities in neurons are sufficient to explain the clinical disease and fatal outcome of experimental rabies in yellow fluorescent protein-expressing transgenic mice.

Under natural conditions and in some experimental models, rabies virus infection of the central nervous system causes relatively mild histop … cerebral cortex. However, fluorescence microscopy revealed marked beading and fragmentation of the dendrites and axons of layer V pyramidal neurons in the cerebral cortex, cerebellar mossy fibers, and axons in brainstem tracts. At an earlier time point, when mice displayed hind-limb paralysis, beading was observed in a few axons in the cerebellar commissur …

Ultrastructural localization of connexins (Cx36, Cx43, Cx45), glutamate receptors and aquaporin-4 in rodent olfactory mucosa, olfactory nerve and olfactory bulb.

Odorant/receptor binding and initial olfactory information processing occurs in olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) within the olfactory epithelium. Subsequent information coding involves high-frequency spike synchronization of paired mitral/tufted cell dendrites within olfactory bulb (OB) glomeruli via positive feedback between glutamate receptors and closely-associated gap junctions. With mRNA for connexins Cx36, Cx43 and Cx45 detected within ORN somata and Cx36 and Cx43 proteins reported in ORN somata and axons, abundant gap junctions were proposed to couple ORNs. We used freeze-fracture repl…

Characterization of somatostatin- and cholecystokinin-immunoreactive periglomerular cells in the rat olfactory bulb.

Periglomerular cells (PG) are interneurons of the olfactory bulb (OB) that modulate the first synaptic relay of the olfactory information from the olfactory nerve to the dendrites of the bulbar principal cells. Previous investigations have pointed to the heterogeneity of these interneurons and have demonstrated the presence of two different types of PG. In the rat OB, type 1 PG receive synaptic contacts from the olfactory axons and are gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic, whereas type 2 PG do not receive synaptic contacts from the olfactory axons and are GABA immunonegative. In this study, we…

Output from Toh-IR profiles was primarily to large ganglion cell dendrites but also to bipolar cell axons, GABA-IR amacrines, unspecified amacrine cells and other Toh-IR dendrites. CONCLUSIONS: The synaptology of the dopamine cells of the turtle retina suggests that sustained inhibitory amacrine cell pathways, including G …

Neuronal alterations in patients with dementia: a Golgi study on biopsy samples.

Golgi-impregnated neurons in biopsy samples of the cerebral cortex (area 8) of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), Pick's disease (PD) and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), but not in control samples, have swellings in the proximal and mid regions of dendrites of pyramidal and non-pyramidal cells that differ from normal dendritic varicosities. Dendritic outgrowths, isolated or in clusters, and covered with spines occur only in neurons with reduced dendritic arbors mainly located in the vicinity of senile plaques. Degenerating pyramidal and non-pyramidal neurons, although distributed through…

Spongiform encephalopathy: a neurocytologist's viewpoint with a note on Alzheimer's disease.

Ultrastructural studies of spongiform encephalopathy (SE) reveal no very early pathological changes in kuru where membrane lamellation has been reported. This observation is challenged. In the later stages of SE, two main theories are examined--the spiroplasma theory and the prion (6 nm filament) theory. Neither are sufficiently convincing at present. In my own ultrastudies of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease brain, extensive dismantling of the dendritic microtubule cytoskeleton has been observed. Loss of dendritic cytoskeleton implies loss of dendritic cytotransport with abolition of postsynaptic ev
