The most common active ingredient in hair coloring is para-phenylenediamine (PPDA), which can produce contact dermatitis, particularly in persons who dye their scalp hair and in hairdressers. We have identified another group of patients also at risk, namely men from Arab countries, who commonly grow beards and dye them. Contact dermatitis, an inflammatory response of the skin to an irritant or an allergen, can affect hospital staff. Most clinicians are routinely exposed to irritants such as latex, detergents, and chemicals. Treatment with topical corticosteroids and avoidance of suspect irritants usually resolves the dermatitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We calculated the IR of occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by chromium, nickel and cobalt by occupation, during a 7-year period (1991-1997) from the data of the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases and from the statistics on the working population in different occupations.

Protein contact dermatitis (PCD) is a chronic recurrent dermatitis caused by contact with a proteinaceous material. PCD may also present as paronychia. Here a case of PCD and paronychia from natural rubber latex (NRL) is presented. The correct diagnosis would not have been established if prick testing with NRL had not been performed. This case shows that contact allergy presenting as dermatitis may occur despite negative patch test results. PCD from NRL may be relatively common, although very few cases have been published. We report a case of severe peristomal dermatitis that was refractory to conventional treatments. Patch testing revealed positive allergies to myroxylon perulase (balsam of Peru), propylene glycol, Stomahesive paste, and Gantrez. This is the second reported case of patch-test-positive peristomal allergy to Gantrez.

Twenty-six adult free-ranging Canadian toads (Bufo hemiophrys) were collected from northeastern North Dakota (USA) during the last week of August 1994 and placed in captivity. During late December and January 1995, 21 Canadian toads died. Clinical signs included increased time sitting in water bowls, darkened dorsal skin, constant arching of their backs, and hyperemia and sloughing of ventral epidermis. Interleukin (IL)-7 transgenic mice, which we established previously, developed severe dermatitis characterized by massive infiltration of gammadelta T cells in the dermal lesion.
