Long-term follow-up of children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy II: neurophysiological aspects.

The aim of this study was to examine long-term neurophysiological outcomes and sensory function in patients with obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP). The same 70 children/adolescents examined in part I: functional aspects (35 males, 35 females; age range 7-20y, mean 13y 6mo [SD 4y 3mo], median 13y) were examined with neurophysiological methods at 3 to 7 months and at 7 to 20 years of age. Thirteen of the 70 participants underwent nerve reconstruction before 1 year of age. Electromyography (EMG) was performed on deltoid and first interossei muscles; Quantitative Sensory Test was used for C6

Sonographic differentiation of stable and unstable lateral condyle fractures of the humerus in children.

Fractures of the lateral humeral condyle in children may cause difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. The fracture line involves the cartilaginous trochlea, which cannot be visualized on conventional radiographs. Therefore, a differentiation is not possible between the conservatively treated stable and the surgically treated unstable fracture, which involves the joint surface but is not dislocated primarily. We performed high-resolution ultrasonography in six children (age, 4-9 years) with a lateral condyle fracture of the humerus and uncertain joint involvement. Ultrasonography was able to

MR imaging of the elbow. An update.

MR imaging provides clinically useful information in assessing the elbow joint. Superior depiction of muscles, ligaments, and tendons as well as the ability to visualize nerves, bone marrow, and hyaline cartilage directly are advantages of MR imaging relative to conventional imaging techniques. These features of MR imaging may help to establish the cause of elbow pain by accurately depicting the presence and extent of bone and soft-tissue pathology. Ongoing improvements in surface coil design and newer pulse sequences have resulted in higher quality MR images of the elbow that can be obtained

Treatment for lateral epicondylitis: variables related to recovery.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a treatment regime utilised for lateral epicondylitis that is designed to expedite return to activity and to identify variables related to treatment outcomes. Patients treated in a sports medicine clinic between 1978 and 1980 received, by mail, a brief questionnaire investigating the variables of the injuries and level of success of the treatment. Specific techniques ensured confidentiality and validation of information. Through the analyses conducted, an inverse relationship in the total group between the level of success and the

Rapid Pain Reduction and Wound Closure Following Treatment With an Amorphous Silica-Based Fiber Wound Matrix in Partial-Thickness Thermal Burns: A Case Report.

Partial-thickness thermal burns can cause substantial pain and require effective wound management to support re-epithelialization. A 30-year-old man sustained 3%-4% total body surface area partial-thickness burns of the left hand, forearm, elbow, and abdomen following a gasoline-accelerated brush fire. Despite emergency debridement, dressings, and multimodal analgesia, pain remained 6-10/10. Approximately two days after injury, an amorphous silica-based fiber (SBF) wound matrix was applied to the open wounds, while a silica-based cream (SBC) was applied to surrounding intact skin. At initial S

Free Functional Gracilis Muscle Transfer for Severe Pediatric Volkmann Ischemic Contracture After Traditional Splinting of a Supracondylar Humerus Fracture: A Case Report.

Volkmann ischemic contracture is a severe and largely preventable complication of untreated or delayed compartment syndrome. In children, it is most commonly associated with supracondylar humerus fractures, especially when external compression from casts or splints is not promptly recognized. We report the case of a six-and-a-half-year-old right-handed girl who developed severe left upper-limb dysfunction after a closed supracondylar humerus fracture treated in a rural setting with tight traditional splint immobilization, locally known as "Jbira." No fasciotomy was performed during the acute p

Stemless vs. stemmed reverse total shoulder arthroplasty as primary treatment in the elderly: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is widely used for cuff-deficient and degenerative shoulder conditions in older adults. While stemmed implants offer long-term success, stemless designs have gained attention due to bone preservation and ease of revision, but evidence remains limited. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar till June 2025. Five studies met the inclusion criteria. Key outcomes included satisfaction, Visual Analog Scale for pain, functional scores, shoulder range of motion (ROM), fracture-related co

Rehabilitation Management of a Patient with Median Nerve Entrapment from Venipuncture-associated Hematoma in Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever: A Case Report.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a severe form of dengue presenting commonly with bleeding diathesis, but rarely with peripheral nervous system manifestations. Proximal median neuropathy comprises 1% of upper limb compression syndromes, and this case is the first to report injury to the proximal median nerve due to compression from hematoma formation. This case report presents the rehabilitation process of a 25-year-old Filipino female median nerve entrapment from venipuncture-associated hematoma presenting as burning sensation on the medial elbow, forearm and hand, weak flexion movement of her lef

Analysis of the Characteristics and Intricacies of Arrangement of Neural Elements in the Costoclavicular Block Using Ultrasound: A Retrospective Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound (US)-guided costoclavicular block (CCB) is a promising new approach to brachial plexus (BP) block which is increasingly being utilized. Conventionally, the costoclavicular space (CCS) has been described to contain three cords. However, there may be variations in the neural pattern of the BP which is important to know to prevent inadvertent injury. We intend to describe the variations in neural patterns from retrospective scans of patients receiving costoclavicular BP block. METHODS: The stored US images of patients who had received BP block using the CCB for surgery at

Life-threatening subclavian artery bleeding following percutaneous coronary intervention with stent implantation: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Vascular complications of transradial percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are rare and usually occur at the access site below the elbow. Life-threatening vascular complications during transradial PCI therapy, such as vessel perforation and dissection in the brachiocephalic, subclavian, internal mammary, and thyrocervical arteries, are rarely reported. Subclavian artery bleeding is a potentially serious complication of vascular interventional procedures leading to tracheal obstruction, hemothorax, respiratory failure, hemorrhagic shock, and death if not diagnosed early and trea

Quantification of Behind Shield Blunt Impacts Using a Modified Upper Extremity Anthropomorphic Test Device.

Ballistic shields are used by military and police members in dangerous situations to protect the user against threats such as gunfire. When struck, the shield material deforms to absorb the incoming kinetic energy of the projectile. If the rapid back-face deformation contacts the arm, it can potentially impart a large force, leading to injury risk, termed behind armor blunt trauma (BABT). This work characterized the loading profiles due to the contact between the deforming back-face of the shield and the arm using a modified upper extremity anthropomorphic test device (ATD). This ATD measured

Kinesiotaping therapy for midshaft clavicular fractures: a randomised trial study.

Midshaft clavicle fractures with shortening by less than 2 cm or minimal displacement without neurovascular injury can be treated conservatively. We hypothesized that kinesiotaping reduces the disadvantages of conservative treatment, such as early-phase pain, high nonunion rates, and a prolonged time to return to work, and yields better clinical and functional outcomes. Forty patients were randomly divided into the arm slings only (group S) or arm sling with kinesiotaping therapy group (group K). The outcome measures included the visual analog scale (VAS) score, Constant score, American Should

Extensive progressive heterotopic ossification post-Covid-19 in a man.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of extraskeletal bone in muscle and soft tissues and could be genetic or non-genetic. The classic presentation of non-genetic HO is in young adults with a clear history of local trauma, surgery or prolonged immobilization after spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. Genetic HO has a significant clinical severity compared to non-genetic causes and includes fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). FOP is an extremely rare genetic skeletal disorder characterized by congenital malformations of the great toes and progressive heterotopic ossifica

MRI Utility in Hand Surgery.

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is frequently used in the diagnosis of upper extremity conditions. We hypothesize that the results often do not change treatment. The purpose of the present study was to prospectively assess the extent to which MRI findings alter patient management. Methods: Ten hand surgeons who were ordering an MRI (elbow or distal) completed a standardized questionnaire. Prior to obtaining the MRI, the surgeon recorded their pre-MRI diagnosis and recommended treatment if no MRI could be obtained. Following the MRI, the surgeon recorded their post-MRI diagnosis an
