Circulating immune complexes (CICs) have been detected in the sera of patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin's disease, chronic myeloid leukemia, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia by using C1q-binding and L1210-binding assays. Both assays gave broadly similar patterns of reactivity in terms of frequency and magnitude, though there are some differences. Significantly elevated CIC levels were observed in all pathologic groups. Various pure snake venom phospholipases A2 were used for studying their effect on guanylate cyclase activity. All the phospholipases A2 tested were found to activate guanylate cyclase from a rat brain homogenate. It was shown that particulate guanylate cyclase was especially affected. Low PRA and active renin (AR) may be accompanied by low inactive renin (IR), indicating impaired renin production, or by normal or elevated IR, suggesting defective conversion to AR. To explore these possibilities, plasma AR and IR (acid activation method) were measured in normal volunteers and in patients with low PRA. All low renin states showed significant low PRA and AR when compared to normals; on the other hand, IR was 11.8 +/- 1.1 ng/ml.h in normals; low in primary aldosteronism (2.1 +/- 0.5 ng/ml.h) and anephric subjects; normal in low renin essential hypertension (7.5 +/- 1.3 ng/ml.h)

The effect of vasopressin on the toad urinary bladder has been shown to be mediated by cyclic AMP. It has been assumed that, as demonstrated for other systems, this involves activation of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase. In order to test this hypothesis we investigated the effect of vasopressin on cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases in epithelial cells of toad bladders. About 80% of protein kinase activity and cyclic AMP-binding capacity was found to be in the cytosol. DEAE-cellulose chromatography showed a pattern of 15--20% type I and 80--85% type II cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase.

It is well established that caloric restriction extends life span and significantly retards the rate of occurrence of most age-associated degenerative disease processes. A paucity of data exists relative to the mechanisms by which caloric restriction accomplishes these events. We have examined the effect of caloric restriction in rats on several hepatic enzymes of intermediary metabolism.
