Bypass neural interfaces for paralysis: clinical translation, challenges and future directions.

Advances in neural recording, real-time decoding and bioelectronic stimulation have enabled a new class of systems that re-establish functional communication across disrupted neural pathways. In the context of paralysis, these neural bypass interfaces link upstream neural intent to effector activation downstream of the lesion, effectively circumventing sites of injury within the nervous system to restore volitional movement. In this review, we define neural bypass interfaces as an emerging category of bioelectronic medicine, distinct from conventional brain-computer interfaces and neuromodulat

Decoding the brain-machine interaction for upper limb assistive technologies: advances and challenges.

Understanding how the brain encodes upper limb movements is crucial for developing control mechanisms in assistive technologies. Advances in assistive technologies, particularly Brain-machine Interfaces (BMIs), highlight the importance of decoding motor intentions and kinematics for effective control. EEG-based BMI systems show promise due to their non-invasive nature and potential for inducing neural plasticity, enhancing motor rehabilitation outcomes. While EEG-based BMIs show potential for decoding motor intention and kinematics, studies indicate inconsistent correlations with actual or pla…

Brain outcomes with lifestyle change in adults with Down syndrome: Rationale and design for a 12-month randomized trial.

Most adults with Down syndrome (DS) will develop pathology associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). By age 65, the cumulative incidence of dementia exceeds 90%. The available data from trials in typically developed adults suggest the potential for intentional weight loss and changes in dietary intake to prevent or delay the development of AD. However, the potential of weight loss to prevent or delay AD in adults with DS has not been previously examined. In this article, we describe the methods and rationale for a randomized trial that will evaluate the impact of weight loss and dietary intake…

The implications of healthcare professionals wearing jewelry on patient care biosafety: observational insights and experimental approaches.

The use of jewelry among healthcare professionals poses a risk of cross contamination due to potential bacterial accumulation and spread. Through a mixed-method design, this study first analyzed the implications of healthcare professionals wearing jewelry on patient care biosafety as well as on the residual bacterial load of hands and rings after hand hygiene. Firstly, an observational prevalence study to verify whether nursing professionals wear personal accessories during healthcare assistance was carried out. Second, an experimental design involving intentional contamination and hygiene of …

Impressions about harm are formed rapidly and then refined, modulated by serotonin.

Attributing motives to others is a crucial aspect of mentalizing, can be biased by prejudice, and is affected by common psychiatric disorders. It is therefore important to understand in depth the mechanisms underpinning it. Toward improving models of mentalizing motives, we hypothesized that people quickly infer whether other's motives are likely beneficial or detrimental, then refine their judgment (classify-refine). To test this, we used a modified Dictator game, a game theoretic task, where participants judged the likelihood of intent to harm vs. self-interest in economic decisions. Toward

News insights into social cognition in Williams syndrome from a comprehensive assessment and a virtual reality task.

Although the uneven neuropsychological profile of William Syndrome (WS) is well established, less is known about social perception and how profile characteristics may affect the ability to predict other's intentions, a main hallmark of social cognition. This study aimed at examining the neuropsychological profile, including social perception, of adolescents and adults with WS, and at verifying which neuropsychological outcome might account for their social prediction ability. Twenty-six individuals with WS were administered a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, and a virtual reality s…

The transdiagnostic use of worry and rumination to avoid negative emotional contrasts following negative events: A momentary assessment study.

The contrast avoidance model (CAM) suggests that individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are sensitive to a sharp increase in negative and/or decrease in positive affect. They thus worry to increase negative emotion to avoid negative emotional contrasts (NECs). However, no prior naturalistic study has examined reactivity to negative events, or ongoing sensitivity to NECs, or the application of CAM to rumination. We used ecological momentary assessment to examine effects of worry and rumination on negative and positive emotion before and after negative events and intentional use of …

Procedures by Physician Associates in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The number of obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States is decreasing and providers backfilling this service have not been well described. The intent of the study was to identify the skills that physician associates (PAs) in obstetrics and gynecology (OBGyn) contribute to this aspect of medicine and surgery. METHODS: A survey of PAs specializing in OBGyn was conducted in 2022. The intent was to list office-based procedures that were part of their skill set. A vetted questionnaire was sent to the 1,630 American Academy of Physician Associates members who i

When to discharge and when to voluntary or compulsory hospitalize? Factors associated with treatment decision after self-harm.

Clinicians assessing suicidal patients in emergency departments (EDs) must decide whether to admit the person to a psychiatric ward with voluntary or compulsory hospitalization or to discharge him/her as an outpatient. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify independent predictors of this decision among a large sample of self-harm (SH) patients. It used data from all patients admitted to four Swiss EDs between 2016 and 2019. Socio-demographic, clinical, and suicidal process-related characteristics data were evaluated against the decision for voluntary or compulsory hospitalization using t

The loud scratch: a newly identified gesture of Sumatran orangutan mothers in the wild.

The communicative function of primates' self-directed behaviours like scratching has gained increasing attention in recent years, but their intentional use is still debated. Here, we addressed this issue by exploring the communicative function of 'loud scratches' in wild Sumatran orangutans. Building on previous studies in chimpanzees, we examined the prediction that audio-visual loud scratches are used communicatively in mother-infant travel coordination. Specifically, we examined whether individual, social and scratch features affected the use of pre-move scratches, markers of intentional si…

Loss of expression of BAP1 is very rare in non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Germline mutations of the BAP1 gene have been implicated in a cancer predisposition syndrome which includes mesothelioma, uveal melanoma, cutaneous melanocytic lesions, renal cell carcinoma, and possibly other malignancies. Double hit inactivation of BAP1 with subsequent loss of expression of the BAP1 protein also occurs in approximately 50% of mesotheliomas. The link between BAP1 mutation and lung cancer is yet to be fully explored. We sought to assess BAP1 expression in a large cohort of lung cancers undergoing surgery with curative intent. We searched the Anatomical Pathology database of ou
