INTRODUCTION: Traditional iron parameters often fail to distinguish the cause of iron-restricted anemia in patients without an obvious underlying cause. We evaluated whether an oral iron absorption test (OIAT) and hepcidin measurement could be useful diagnostic tests in these patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data extracted from medical records of all patients who underwent an OIAT and hepcidin measurement, noting subsequent clinical diagnosis. Δ Iron >15 µmol/L during the OIAT and a hepcidin level below the median (or suppressed ≤0.5 n<sc>m</sc>) were considered appropriate.

INTRODUCTION: Malabsorptive bariatric procedures, like the biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) and BPD with duodenal switch (BPD/DS), have excellent results in terms of weight loss. However, these malabsorptive techniques are associated with severe malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vitamin and mineral status after BPD and BPD/DS in the long term.

METHODS: Patients with gastroparesis on oral intake (N = 305) were enrolled in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Gastroparesis Registry and completed diet questionnaires at 7 centers.
