Students' experiences of using ChatGPT for English language learning: a qualitative study in a Malaysian higher education institution.

A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted with 25 students from a Malaysian institution to gain a deeper understanding of their motivation for using ChatGPT in English language learning. The study employed Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the results demonstrated that ChatGPT has the potential to contribute positively to aspects related to English language competence, social connections, and independent learning processes. Therefore, ChatGPT emerges as a helpful resource for enhancing grammar, writing, and conversational tasks, allowing educators to prioritize higher order thinking abil…

Electroconvulsive therapy improves functional connectivity of the frontoparietal network and language network in patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Previous studies have reported abnormal functional connectivity (FC) in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD); however, the FC patterns of the frontoparietal network (FPN) and language network (LN) remained unclear. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is regarded as a one of the most effective treatments for patients with TRD. Despite its high efficacy, the underlying mechanisms of ECT remain largely unknown. Seed-based FC analysis was performed using imaging data from 72 patients with TRD (with 52 finishing the follow-up) and 63 healthy controls (HCs) to detect FC patterns of the FPN…

Acculturation to accumulation? Variation in the income-subjective well-being relationship by language among Latine respondents in the U.S.

Five decades of continuous research have revealed the relationship between income and subjective well-being (SWB) to be complex and multifaceted. Recent studies demonstrate significant variation in the importance of income for well-being across a variety of social contexts. A portion of this work has focused on Latin America, which contains some of the happiest countries in the world despite having relatively low standards of living and prosperity. Explanations for this paradox have usually focused on the role of culture, suggesting that income may be less relevant for shaping well-being in cu

Experiences and perspectives of UK speech and language therapists on telehealth assessment with people living with post-stroke aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Stroke care in the UK was significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with many services switching to telehealth. Post-pandemic, a UK survey of speech and language therapists (SLTs) working with people with aphasia (PWA) showed the vast majority planned to continue to use telehealth alongside in-person intervention. Telehealth is considered a cost-effective and feasible method of service delivery; however, there is limited evidence to support its use in the assessment of people with post-stroke aphasia. AIMS: To investigate what barriers and facilitators SLTs experience when …

A large language model-based tool for identifying relationships to industry in research on the carcinogenicity of benzene, cobalt, and aspartame.

BACKGROUND: Industry-funded research poses a threat to the validity of scientific inference on carcinogenic hazards. Scientists require tools to better identify and characterize industry sponsored research across bodies of evidence to reduce the possible influence of industry bias in evidence synthesis reviews. We applied a novel large language model (LLM)-based tool named InfluenceMapper to demonstrate and evaluate its performance in identifying relationships to industry in research on the carcinogenicity of benzene, cobalt, and aspartame. METHODS: All epidemiological, animal cancer, and mec…

Latent Profiles of Early Language Development in a Large Finnish-Speaking Sample of the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Research on early language development has primarily used two categories to group at-risk children, differing by the age at which risk is identified. Late talkers are toddlers with late onset of language development, some of whom may catch up with peers. Developmental language disorder is used to refer to children above the age of 4 years. To this day, the longitudinal relationship between the two categories remains unclear. In this study, we explored early language trajectories in a large birth cohort using exploratory methodology to gain better understanding of the types and prevale…

Perspective on patient and non-academic partner engagement for the responsible integration of large language models in health chatbots.

Uses of large language models (LLMs) in health chatbots are expanding into high-stakes clinical contexts, heightening the need for tools that are evidence-based, accountable, accurate, and patient-centred. This conceptual, practice-informed Perspective reflects on engaging patients and non-academic partners for the responsible integration of LLMs, grounded in the co-construction of MARVIN (for people living with HIV) and in an emerging collaboration with MIT Critical Data. Organised by the Software Development Life Cycle, we describe: conception/needs assessment with patient partners to identi…

Evaluating the readability and quality of AI-generated scoliosis education materials: a comparative analysis of five language models.

The complexity of scoliosis-related terminology and treatment options often hinders patients and caregivers from understanding their choices, making it difficult to make informed decisions. As a result, many patients seek guidance from artificial intelligence (AI) tools. However, AI-generated health content may suffer from low readability, inconsistency, and questionable quality, posing risks of misinformation. This study evaluates the readability and informational quality of scoliosis-related content produced by AI. We evaluated five AI models-ChatGPT-4o, ChatGPT-o1, ChatGPT-o3 mini-high, Dee

Shared Environment - Different Genes: Speech-Language Development in a Pair of Dizygotic Twins with and Without MECP2 Mutation.

This retrospective study compared the speech-language development of a pair of dizygotic twin girls during the first 2 years of life: one with typical development (Twin A) and one with atypical development (Twin B), who was later diagnosed with Rett syndrome (RTT). Audio snippets were extracted from home videos, with nearly equal representation from each child. The audio analysis focused on articulatory complexity, voice characteristics, and linguistic variability. Despite sharing the same social-communicative environment, the twins' speech-language development diverged. From the first to seco…
