Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) with subsequent pulmonary embolus (PE) is frequently fatal if untreated. Athletes may be susceptible to DVT following minor blunt trauma to the popliteal fossa. We report an adult male hockey player with no "classic" risk factors for DVT who presented with a DVT and bilateral PE following minor popliteal blunt trauma. This case report illustrates the utility of likelihood ratios when interpreting the results of diagnostic tests such as Doppler ultrasonography.

Results of this study allow for the assessment of primary injuries to the pedestrian's lower extremities inflicted in a frontal collision with the forepart of a moving car. The character of the injuries was shown to depend on the shape of the forefront. Morphological criteria for the characteristic of the injuries are proposed allowing to distinguish between bodily harm caused by frontal impact of the forefront of "classical" VAZ (1-7) car models. The data obtained were subjected to statistical treatment.

A 46-year-old patient sustained a dia-infracondylar tibial fracture after a ski accident. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) was carried out. BACKGROUND: In 2002, our institution published a 5-year retrospective review of 10 patients who developed secondary extremity compartment syndrome (SECS) with a mortality rate of 70%. Since then, we have aggressively screened for the development of SECS in high-risk patients. A short cut review was carried out to establish whether prophylactic antibiotics reduce infections and other complications in elderly patients with pretibial haematomas. Altogether 65 papers were found using the reported search, of which none presented any evidence to answer the clinical question. It is concluded that there is no evidence available to answer this question. Further research is needed.

A distally-based sural flap was used in four patients with soft-tissue defects in the lower leg and foot. All flaps survived completely without venous congestion. To make safe use of this flap it is important to include both the sural nerve and the lesser saphenous vein in the flap. It also seems to be important to include the surrounding fatty tissues in the pedicle and to avoid compression at the point of its angulation. OBJECTIVES: To undertake a prospective epidemiological study of the injuries sustained in English youth academy football over two competitive seasons.
METHODS: Player injuries were annotated by medical staff at 38 English football club youth academies. A specific injury audit questionnaire was used together with a weekly return form that documented each club's current injury status.

We report the result of the treatment of 26 lower limb fractures in patients with established paraplegia. We treated one fracture of the femoral neck, one intertrochanteric, two subtrochanteric, two of the femoral shaft, seven of the supracondylar region, six of the proximal tibia, one of the tibial shaft, and six pilon fractures.
