Teens and opioids postsurgery (TOPS): protocol for a prospective observational study describing associations between sleep deficiency and opioid use following outpatient surgery in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: The opioid crisis is a significant burden on adolescent public health in the USA. Medical use of prescription opioids is a pathway via which adolescents transition to opioid misuse, opioid use disorder and overdose. More than half of all opioids prescribed to adolescents are for pain management following surgery. Yet, little is known about the critical period following surgery during which adolescents initiate opioid misuse or the modifiable mechanisms (such as sleep deficiency) contributing to this process. This prospective observational study will broaden our knowledge by exami

Health-related quality of life among pregnant women exposed to malaria in an endemic region of Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Scientific literature provides very limited evidence on the impact of gestational malaria (GM) on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of pregnant women. The objective of this study was to describe the HRQoL of pregnant women exposed to malaria in an endemic region of Colombia; to compare HRQoL between women with and without GM; and to understand the meanings attributed to HRQoL among women exposed to GM. METHODS: A convergent triangulation mixed-methods design (QUAN-QUAL) was used. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 400 pregnant women, and a grounded theory approach

Associations of combined exposures to surrounding green, air pollution and traffic noise on mental health.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is emerging that poor mental health is associated with the environmental exposures of surrounding green, air pollution and traffic noise. Most studies have evaluated only associations of single exposures with poor mental health. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate associations of combined exposure to surrounding green, air pollution and traffic noise with poor mental health. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we linked data from a Dutch national health survey among 387,195 adults including questions about psychological distress, based on the Kessler 10 scale, to an external dat

Irrational Beliefs and Personality Traits as Psychological Mechanisms Underlying the Adolescents' Extremist Mind-Set.

The tripartite model of militant extremist mind-set proposed by Stankov et al. (2010b) includes three components: War (justification of violent acts as war); God (violence is seeing extremist acts as moral because they are done in the name of God or Allah); and West (violence against Western countries is justified because they are perceived as evil and/or immoral). There is a lack of conceptual framework regarding psychological mechanism that underlie radicalization and extremism, and there is little evidence regarding risk factors for radicalization in the scientific literature. In the presen

Transportation noise exposure, noise annoyance and respiratory health in adults: A repeated-measures study.

Transportation noise leads to sleep disturbance and to psychological and physiological sustained stress reactions, which could impact respiratory health. However, epidemiologic evidence on associations of objective transportation noise exposure and also perceived noise annoyance with respiratory morbidity is limited. We investigated independent associations of transportation noise exposure and noise annoyance with prevalent respiratory symptoms and incident asthma in adults. Using 17,138 observations (from 7049 participants) from three SAPALDIA (Swiss Cohort Study on Lung and Heart Diseases in

Use of mental health services among disaster survivors: predisposing factors.

BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence of mental health problems after disasters it is important to study health services utilization. This study examines predictors for mental health services (MHS) utilization among survivors of a man-made disaster in the Netherlands (May 2000). METHODS: Electronic records of survivors (n = 339; over 18 years and older) registered in a mental health service (MHS) were linked with general practice based electronic medical records (EMRs) of survivors and data obtained in surveys. EMR data were available from 16 months pre-disaster until 3 years post-disaster. S

Effects of multicultural piano education on children's psychosocial wellbeing: the roles of cross-cultural musical competence and cultural identity.

INTRODUCTION: Children's psychosocial wellbeing is closely linked to emotional regulation, social competence, self-esteem, resilience, and cultural identity. Traditional piano instruction commonly prioritizes technical skills and Western classical repertoire, leaving its psychological and cross-cultural potential underexplored. This study examined whether a structured multicultural piano education programme could enhance psychosocial wellbeing in children aged 6-12 and whether cross-cultural musical competence and cultural identity mediated these effects. METHODS: A 12-week stratified control

Socio-ecological determinants of infertility psychological distress trajectories in women undergoing ART: a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Infertility psychological distress (IPD) is a prevalent condition influenced by a complex interplay of demographic, clinical, and psychosocial factors. However, the longitudinal progression of IPD remains poorly understood, and existing research has largely failed to capture the potential heterogeneity in its developmental trajectories over time. Furthermore, the multi-level determinants of these trajectories require clearer identification to inform targeted supportive care. AIMS: This study aimed to identify the distinct developmental trajectories of IPD among women undergoing as

Investigating the association between pain and psychological vulnerabilities and postpartum depression.

Pain and psychological vulnerabilities may be associated with the development of postpartum depression (PPD) in women undergoing Cesarean delivery. However, there is limited information regarding women undergoing labor and delivery. We investigated whether pre-delivery pain and psychological vulnerabilities, and other risk factors were associated with an increased risk of PPD among laboring women. This was a secondary analysis of a clinical trial conducted between June 2017 and July 2021. The risk of PPD was assessed using an online survey on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) adminis

Evidence for the biopsychosocial model of suicide: a review of whole person modeling studies using machine learning.

BackgroundTraditional approaches to modeling suicide-related thoughts and behaviors focus on few data types from often-siloed disciplines. While psychosocial aspects of risk for these phenotypes are frequently studied, there is a lack of research assessing their impact in the context of biological factors, which are important in determining an individual's fulsome risk profile. To directly test this biopsychosocial model of suicide and identify the relative importance of predictive measures when considered together, a transdisciplinary, multivariate approach is needed. Here, we systematically

Potassium-Competitive Acid Blocker Increases Ileal Permeability and Exacerbates Ileal Inflammation under Stress Conditions in a Mouse Model of Eosinophilic Enteritis.

INTRODUCTION: Potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs) have been empirically administered to treat non-esophageal eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases, although their efficacy remains unproven. Our previous findings demonstrated that psychological stress impairs the intestinal barrier and exacerbates eosinophilic enteritis (EoN) in a mouse model. Moreover, we demonstrated that P-CAB increased intestinal permeability under psychological stress. The aim of this study was to clarify the hypothesis that P-CAB exacerbate EoN by increasing intestinal permeability under stressful conditions. M

Unveiling Sustainable Food Choices: How Green Attributes and Environmental Values Drive the Continuous Purchase Intentions of Organic Cocoa in Taiwan.

As the global agri-food system faces escalating climate-related challenges, developing localized low-carbon short food supply chains (SFSCs) has become a vital strategy for sustainable agriculture. To elucidate the psychological drivers of green consumer behavior within this context, this study integrates the Stimulus-Organism-Behavior-Consequence (SOBC) framework with the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The aim is to investigate the continuous purchase intentions of Taiwanese consumers for organic cocoa. Data collected via an online survey from 377 consumers with prior cocoa consumption exp
