From neuromuscular activation to end-point locomotion: An artificial neural network-based technique for neural prostheses.

Neuroprostheses, implantable or non-invasive ones, are promising techniques to enable paralyzed individuals with conditions, such as spinal cord injury or spina bifida (SB), to control their limbs voluntarily. Direct cortical control of invasive neuroprosthetic devices and robotic arms have recently become feasible for primates. However, little is known about designing non-invasive, closed-loop neuromuscular control strategies for neural prostheses. Our goal was to investigate if an artificial neural network-based (ANN-based) model for closed-loop-controlled neural prostheses could use neuromu

Modeling the activity of furin inhibitors using artificial neural network.

Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models were constructed for predicting the inhibition of furin-dependent processing of anthrax protective antigen of substituted guanidinylated aryl 2,5-dideoxystreptamines. Molecular descriptors calculated by E-Dragon and RECON were subjected to variable reduction using the Unsupervised Forward Selection (UFS) algorithm. The variables were then used as input for QSAR model generation using partial least squares and back-propagation neural network. Prediction was performed via a two-step approach: (i) perform classification to determine wheth

In search of subtypes of Chinese developmental dyslexia.

The dual-route model offers a popular way to classify developmental dyslexia into phonological and surface subtypes. The current study examined whether this dual-route model could provide a framework for understanding the varieties of Chinese developmental dyslexia. Three groups of Chinese children (dyslexics, chronological-age controls, and reading-level controls) were tested on Chinese exception character reading, pseudocharacter reading (analogous to English nonword reading), novel word learning, and some phonological and orthographic skills. It was found that Chinese exception character re

[A new linear neural network multi-component analysis method and its application in the analysis of VC yinqiao tablets quantitative analysis].

We measured NIR spectrum of VC yinqiao tablets with spectral instrument, analyzed the contents of acetaminophen and vitamin C in the VC yinqiao tablets with principal component analysis (PCA) and Linear Neural Network, and discussed the choice of principal component number and ANN's parameters affecting the network. To compare arithmetic performance, the authors also processed the spectral data with partial least squares and PCA-BP neural network. Compared with other two data process methods, the experiment and the result of data process showed that the PCA-linear neural network possess the be

Development of quantitative structure-activity relationship and classification models for a set of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

Mathematical models are developed to find quantitative structure-activity relationships that correlate chemical structure and inhibition toward three carbonic anhydrase (CA) isozymes: CA I, II, and IV. Numerical descriptors are generated to encode important topological, geometric, and electronic features of molecular structure. After descriptor generation, multiple linear regression, and computational neural network (CNN) analyses are performed on various descriptor subsets to find superior models for prediction. Committees of five CNNs were utilized to average final predicted values for the 1

[Artificial intelligence in sleep analysis (ARTISANA)--modelling visual processes in sleep classification].

We describe a novel approach to the problem of automated sleep stage recognition. The ARTISANA algorithm mimics the behaviour of a human expert visually scoring sleep stages (Rechtschaffen and Kales classification). It comprises a number of interacting components that imitate the stepwise approach of the human expert, and artificial intelligence components. On the basis of parameters extracted at 1-s intervals from the signal curves, artificial neural networks recognize the incidence of typical patterns, e.g. delta activity or K complexes. This is followed by a rule interpretation stage that i

Time-scale analysis of motor unit action potentials.

Quantitative analysis in clinical electromyography (EMG) is very desirable because it allows a more standardized, sensitive and specific evaluation of the neurophysiological findings, especially for the assessment of neuromuscular disorders. Following the recent development of computer-aided EMG equipment, different methodologies in the time domain and frequency domain have been followed for quantitative analysis. In this study, the usefulness of the wavelet transform (WT), that provides a linear time-scale representation is investigated, for describing motor unit action potential (MUAP) morph

Enhanced Prediction of Absorption and Emission Wavelengths of Organic Compounds through Hybrid Graph Neural Network Architectures.

The prediction of absorption and emission spectra is a crucial task in chemistry and materials science, traditionally addressed with computational methods, such as density functional theory (DFT). While DFT can deliver with high accuracy, its substantial computational cost and long run times hinder its scalability for large molecular systems. In this study, we present an efficient graph neural network (GNN)-based approach for predicting optical properties. Our method combines molecular graph representations with molecular fingerprints, allowing the model to capture detailed structural and elec

Computational deconvolution of gene expression by individual host cellular subsets from microarray analyses of complex, parasite-infected whole tissues.

Analyses of whole organs from parasite-infected animals can reveal the entirety of the host tissue transcriptome, but conventional approaches make it difficult to dissect out the contributions of individual cellular subsets to observed gene expression. Computational deconvolution of gene expression data may be one solution to this problem. We tested this potential solution by deconvoluting whole bladder gene expression microarray data derived from a model of experimental urogenital schistosomiasis. A supervised technique was used to group B-cell and T-cell related genes based on their cell typ

EEG and ECG Wearable Biosensor-Based Affective State Analysis Using Deep Learning over 6G IoT Healthcare Networks.

Physiological signal analysis using wearable biosensors like an electroencephalogram (EEG) and an electrocardiogram (ECG) is widely investigated for affective computing; however, the integration of deep learning-based affective computing within 6G-driven IoT healthcare infrastructures remains limited, with data transmission latency posing a significant challenge. This study proposes a framework for EEG and ECG-based affective state analysis over 6G IoT networks. We utilize an attention-based deep learning model for three-class emotion recognition from EEG signals, and a ResNet50-based convolut

Enhanced SqueezeNet model for detecting IoT-Bot attacks: A comprehensive approach.

The exponential growth of Internet of Things (abbreviated as IoT) has led to a surge in cyber threats, especially botnet attacks that compromise network security. Although machine learning (abbreviated ML) & deep learning (abbreviated as DL) approaches have shown promise in detecting these attacks, they often struggle with limited accuracy & high computational requirements, making them unsuitable for real-time detection in resource-constrained IoT environments. To overcome these limitations, this research proposes an enhanced detection framework based on an improved SqueezeNet model integrated

Change Detection in Graph Streams by Learning Graph Embeddings on Constant-Curvature Manifolds.

The space of graphs is often characterized by a nontrivial geometry, which complicates learning and inference in practical applications. A common approach is to use embedding techniques to represent graphs as points in a conventional Euclidean space, but non-Euclidean spaces have often been shown to be better suited for embedding graphs. Among these, constant-curvature Riemannian manifolds (CCMs) offer embedding spaces suitable for studying the statistical properties of a graph distribution, as they provide ways to easily compute metric geodesic distances. In this paper, we focus on the proble

Time Is Not Space: Core Computations and Domain-Specific Networks for Mental Travels.

UNLABELLED: Humans can consciously project themselves in the future and imagine themselves at different places. Do mental time travel and mental space navigation abilities share common cognitive and neural mechanisms? To test this, we recorded fMRI while participants mentally projected themselves in time or in space (e.g., 9 years ago, in Paris) and ordered historical events from their mental perspective. Behavioral patterns were comparable for mental time and space and shaped by self-projection and by the distance of historical events to the mental position of the self, suggesting the existen

Cervical cancer diagnosis based on modified uniform local ternary patterns and feed forward multilayer network optimized by genetic algorithm.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer for women. Early and accurate diagnosis can save the patient's life. Pap smear testing is nowadays commonly used to diagnose cervical cancer. The type, structure and size of the cervical cells in pap smears images are major factors which are used by specialist doctors to diagnosis abnormality. Various image processing-based approaches have been proposed to acquire pap smear images and diagnose cervical cancer in pap smears images. Accuracy is usually the primary objective in evaluating the performance of these systems. In this paper, a

Interpretable EEG Emotion Classification via CNN Model and Gradient-Weighted Class Activation Mapping.

Background/Objectives: Electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition plays an important role in affective computing and brain-computer interface applications. However, existing methods often face the challenge of achieving high classification accuracy while maintaining physiological interpretability. Methods: In this study, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) model with a simple architecture for EEG-based emotion classification. The model achieves classification accuracies of 95.21% for low/high arousal, 94.59% for low/high valence, and 93.01% for quaternary classification

Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Working Memory: Change in Functional Connectivity Between the Dorsal Attention, Default Mode, and Fronto-Parietal Networks.

Sleep deprivation (SD) is very common in modern society and has a profound effect on cognitive function, in particular on working memory (WM). This type of memory is required for completion of many tasks and is adversely affected by SD. However, the cognitive neural mechanism by which SD affects WM, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the changes in the brain network involved in WM after SD. Twenty-two healthy subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging scan while in a state of resting wakefulness and again after 36 h of total SD and performed a WM task before each sca

Resting-State Connectivity of the Left Frontal Cortex to the Default Mode and Dorsal Attention Network Supports Reserve in Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Reserve refers to the phenomenon of relatively preserved cognition in disproportion to the extent of neuropathology, e.g., in Alzheimer's disease. A putative functional neural substrate underlying reserve is global functional connectivity of the left lateral frontal cortex (LFC, Brodmann Area 6/44). Resting-state fMRI-assessed global LFC-connectivity is associated with protective factors (education) and better maintenance of memory in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Since the LFC is a hub of the fronto-parietal control network that regulates the activity of other networks, the question arises

Multimodal Assessment of Consciousness with Brain-Computer Interfaces and Artificial Intelligence: From Acquired Brain Injury to Neurodegenerative Disease.

The assessment of consciousness has been shaped largely by research on acquired disorders of consciousness after acute or chronic brain injury, but similar problems of unreliable behavioral expression increasingly arise in neurodegenerative disease. This translational overlap is especially relevant when preserved cognition, awareness, or intentionality cannot be reliably expressed because of severe motor impairment, fluctuating arousal, cognitive decline, aphasia, apraxia, or impaired cooperation. In neurodegenerative disease, degeneration of arousal systems, large-scale brain networks, cognit

Deep Learning Algorithm for the Confirmation of Mucosal Healing in Crohn's Disease, Based on Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy Images.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mucosal healing (MH) is associated with a stable course of Crohn's disease (CD) which can be assessed by confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE). To minimize the operator's errors and automate assessment of CLE images, we used a deep learning (DL) model for image analysis. We hypothesized that DL combined with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and long short-term memory (LSTM) can distinguish between normal and inflamed colonic mucosa from CLE images. METHODS: The study included 54 patients, 32 with known active CD, and 22 control patients (18 CD patients with MH and four
