BACKGROUND: Following blunt trauma, diagnosis of shoulder dislocation based on physical examination alone is difficult due to possible concurrent proximal humeral fractures. X-rays are therefore used to confirm diagnosis. Results from recent observational studies comparing diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) with X-rays for shoulder dislocation have been encouraging. The aim of this study was to determine whether PoCUS improves diagnostic accuracy when used with physical examination for the diagnosis of shoulder dislocation, proximal humeral fracture and ascertaining succes

Forty patients with articular fractures of the distal radius in which anatomic reduction of the joint surface could not be obtained by closed manipulation or by ligamentotaxis with external fixators had a combination of percutaneous and/or open reduction techniques to restore articular congruity. X-ray films taken after treatment with an average follow-up of 4 years showed satisfactory extraarticular alignment in 85% of the cases, and 37 (92.5%) patients demonstrated an articular step-off of 1 mm or less at late follow-up examination. Radiographic evidence of radiocarpal arthritis was present

BACKGROUND: Ulnar styloid fractures are often associated with distal radius fractures. However, controversy exists regarding whether to treat ulnar styloid fractures. This study aimed to evaluate clinical effects of internal fixation for ulnar styloid fractures after distal radius fractures were treated with the volar locking plate system.
METHODS: We used prospectively collected data of distal radius fractures. 111 patients were enrolled in this study. A matched case-control study design was used. We selected patients who underwent fixation for ulnar styloid fractures (case group). Three con

BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation of pelvic fractures could restore the stability of the pelvic ring, but there were several problems. Minimally invasive closed reduction cannulated screw treatment of pelvic fractures has lots advantages. However, how to insert the cannulated screw safely and effectively to achieve a reliable fixation were still hard for orthopedist. Our aim was to explore the significance of 3D printing technology as a new method for minimally invasive cannulated screw treatment of unstable pelvic fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Ruptures of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon are a well-known complication of distal radius fractures (DRF). There are a lot of suspected mechanisms, including mechanical friction, vascular impairment, injury associated with reduction, and local adhesion. However, there have been limited reports about a closed rupture of the EPL tendon associated with a relatively large, displaced dorsal "beak" fracture fragment. We report about the management outcomes and clinical significance of closed ruptures of the EPL tendon caused by a displaced dorsal fracture fragment of beak-li

INTRODUCTION: There are various surgical approaches for the treatment of posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury-associated tibial fracture avulsion, including arthroscopy-assisted surgery and open posterior surgery. However, none of these treatments are perfect. We have established a simple procedure with microendoscopy-assisted reduction and cannulated screw fixation for the treatment of this disease through a single mini-incision. In this study, we delineated the effects of this surgical approach for patients with PCL tibial avulsion fracture.

BACKGROUND: The wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) technique, which is based on the local infiltration of lidocaine and epinephrine, is widely used in hand and wrist surgery. However, few studies have been conducted on the cost-benefit analysis of phalanx fracture surgery using the WALANT technique. This study aimed to investigate the clinical condition, as well as the time spent for anesthesia and operation. We also performed an economic analysis to compare general anesthesia, local anesthesia with a tourniquet, and the WALANT technique for plate fixation of phalanx fractures.

Surgical morbidity from open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of maxillary sinus wall fracture often surpasses the benefits of ORIF. Hence, the authors devised transnasal endoscopic-assisted reduction of maxillary sinus wall fracture (TERM) without internal fixation as a minimally invasive surgery for maxillary sinus wall fracture. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of TERM in cadavers and patients. Six cadavers were dissected to evaluate the feasibility of TERM. In addition, 20 patients with maxillary sinus wall fractures who underwent TERM in a tertiary hospit

PURPOSE: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the humeral head is a devastating complication of proximal humeral fracture (PHF) that often results in long-term morbidity for the patient. Rates of AVN depend on the number of fracture fragments and are highly variable. The literature suggests that timely stable and anatomic reduction may decrease the rate at which AVN develops after PHF. To our knowledge, there is no literature published investigating a temporal relationship between the timing of PHF fixation and rates of AVN.
METHODS: Operative records of one orthopedic trauma surgeon were used to iden

Pilon fractures in the adolescent are complicated by the presence of the adjacent physis. These fractures usually result from high-energy trauma, frequently associated with soft-tissue trauma, further potentiating treatment difficulties. Although rare, such fractures are associated with a high complication rate, including physeal arrest. It was the objective of this review to increase awareness of this fracture pattern in the adolescent, to determine the types of complications in this difficult group, and to develop a treatment plan to improve the outcome of treatment. Seven children, with a t

An 85-year-old female walker dependent presented with a displaced olecranon fracture following a fall. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using an anatomic olecranon locking plate was performed. Two-week postoperative X-rays revealed fixation failure with persistent fragment displacement and a wide fracture gap. To manage this condition, non-operative management, including sling immobilization for 4 weeks and progressive physical therapy, was pursued with the elbow at 90 degrees flexion. At the 6-month follow-up, the elbow was pain-free with functional range of motion (ROM) being achi
