Encephalocraniocutaneous Lipomatosis Associated with Orbital Cyst: A Variant or New Entity?

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL), also known as Haberland or Fishman syndrome, is an extremely rare congenital neurocutaneous disorder that characteristically involves ectomesodermal tissues such as the central nervous system, eyes, and skin. The etiology of the disease remains unknown. Here we present a rare case of ECCL associated with bilateral eye involvement and orbital cyst from Sub-Saharan Africa. A 3-year-old boy presented with cystic right eye swelling since birth. Physical examination showed alopecia on right side of the scalp, ipsilateral ocular cyst, and microphthalmia w…

Unilateral Ptosis, Proptosis, and Orbital Myositis After Shingles Vaccination.

Vaccinations for shingles are recommended for most adults over 60 years of age and are typically well tolerated. The present case describes acute onset of unilateral ptosis, proptosis, and orbital myositis developing within days after administration of shingles vaccination. The episode resolved to baseline after 1 week of treatment with steroids. To the authors' knowledge, this is first reported case of orbital inflammation following shingles vaccination. Given the temporal relationship and rapid response to treatment, this may represent an autoimmune reaction to the shingles vaccine.

Resolution of refractory orbital cellulitis in an immunocompetent child: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Orbital cellulitis in children is a potentially fatal emergency and develops rapidly, leading to severe visual loss and life-threatening complications. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a 16-month-old girl who presented to the emergency department unconscious with a four-day history of a swollen right eyelid. CT scan revealed soft tissue swelling at the superior and inferior palpebral region with bilateral maxillary sinusitis. She had a severe sepsis and received intravenous antibiotics. After her general condition improved, she underwent surgical drainage in conjunction…

Hemicentral Retinal Artery Occlusion: A Rare Complication of Orbital Cellulitis.

A 14-year-old boy presented with acute vision loss and swelling of the right eye. An anterior segment examination revealed a relative afferent pupillary defect, severe proptosis, and ophthalmoplegia in his right eye. The fundus examination revealed inferior hemicentral retinal artery occlusion. Although the authors proceeded with systemic medical treatment, the findings did not improve. An endoscopic orbital decompression was performed. With both medical and surgical treatment, the orbital cellulitis resolved and the patient's visual acuity improved. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2020;57:e…

Ossifying fibroma in the maxilla and orbital floor: report of an uncommon case.

Benign fibro-osseous lesions occur when normal bone is replaced by cellular fibrous connective tissue and mineralized structures. One rare type of these lesions is the ossifying fibroma (OF). The aim of this study is to report an unusual case of OF in a 57-year-old female. Physical examination showed facial asymmetry without any tenderness, fluctuation, ocular pain, or ophthalmoplegia. Imaging exams revealed a solid mass involving the left maxilla and orbital floor. Surgical resection was performed without any complications or sequelae, and the histopathological results confirmed OF. Although …

Traumatic Cranio-Orbital Injury: Reconstruction Using Extraocular Muscles.

Cranio-orbital trauma is an uncommon yet devastating injury, especially one in the setting of a high-energy gunshot wound. Such injuries were historically reported in the setting of military conflict, and are associated with vision-threatening complications, often resulting in anophthalmos. The authors report a case of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the eye, which requires orbital enucleation with exposed frontal lobe dura. To address the exposed dura, the extraocular muscles were utilized from the enucleation procedure to cover the defect in the acute setting prior to final staged reconstr…

[The surgical removal of orbital foreign bodies: double case report].

The surgical procedure of orbital foreign bodies with its complications is not yet solved in Hungary. Despite the fact that many specialities are involved, until the present day, an orbital surgical centre was not developed. The main goal of this case report is to highlight the importance of these events, to develop a surgical approach, to recognize and solve the complications if they are present even in the cases of organic foreign bodies affecting more head and neck anatomical regions and structures. Orv Hetil. 2020; 161(21): 889-894.

Eyeball deviation by orbital mucocele after midface sinus injury.

A mucocele is an epithelium-lined, mucus-filled cavity in the paranasal sinuses. Mucocele may develop due to scarring and obstruction of the sinus ostium caused by midface sinus trauma, such as orbital bone fracture or endoscopic sinus surgery. The authors report two cases of orbital mucocele as complications following midface sinus injury (endoscopic sinus surgery in one case, and orbital fracture repair in the other). In both cases, imaging studies showed a large orbital mucocele accompanied by bony erosion and orbital wall remodeling, compressing the ocular muscle. Using an open approach, t…
