Group antenatal care positively transforms the care experience: Results of an effectiveness trial in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: We developed and tested a Centering-based group antenatal (ANC) model in Malawi, integrating health promotion for HIV prevention and mental health. We present effectiveness data and examine congruence with only the Group ANC theory of change model, which identifies key processes as supportive relationships, empowered partners in learning and care, and meaningful services, leading to better ANC experiences and outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial at seven clinics in Blantyre District, Malawi, comparing outcomes for 1887 pregnant women randomly

Developing a Strengths-Based, Culturally Grounded Intervention for Black Women Living With HIV and Intimate Partner Violence: A Formative Study of 1MoreStep.

Black women in the United States face intersecting challenges of HIV and intimate partner violence. Few programs integrate safety planning with HIV care engagement while addressing strengths and contextual factors that sustain resilience. We developed 1MoreStep, a strengths-based intervention grounded in a cognitive behavioral approach and an HIV stigma framework. Formative work included 12 in-depth interviews, seven focus groups, and a six-member Community Advisory Board. Findings revealed multilevel barriers, including internalized and anticipated stigma, isolation, and structural service ga

Explaining the attitude-behaviour gap in adolescent sexual and reproductive health service utilization: A cognitive dissonance perspective from rural Uganda.

Adolescents in low-resource settings hold positive attitudes toward sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, yet fail to use them. This study presents a theoretical reinterpretation of mixed-methods data (N = 408 adolescents, aged 13-19) from Uganda's Busoga region, through Festinger's Cognitive Dissonance Theory. Quantitative findings showed health-seeking attitudes predicted SRH service utilization (β = 0.910, p < .001) and future intentions (β = 1.976, p < .001), but 52% of adolescents had no SRH service contact in past year, and mean uptake scores remained below 2.0 on a 5-point scal

Negotiating Stigma: Comparing the Experiences of Self-Identified and Clinically Diagnosed Men with OCD in Russia.

This cross-sectional qualitative study investigates how Russian men with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience and manage mental health stigma, focusing on differences between those with a clinical diagnosis and those who self-identify with the disorder. Through in-depth interviews with eleven participants, the research explores meaning-making, disclosure practices, coping strategies, and the impact of masculine norms on help-seeking. Findings reveal that self-identified men often leverage the OCD label for personal understanding and peer support, while clinically diagnosed men gain v

Trends in Suicidal Behaviors among Hispanic Individuals: Differences by Sexual Orientation, 2015-2019, USA.

Suicide is the 11th-leading cause of death in the U.S., contributing significantly to healthcare burdens. Recent data indicate alarming increases in suicidal behaviors among Hispanic individuals, with a 38.6% rise in suicide rates from 2011 to 2021. This study utilizes pooled data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) to examine trends in suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts among Hispanic adults, stratified by sexual orientation identity. Our analysis reveals higher odds of suicidal behaviors among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) Hispanic individuals, particu

[Expert consensus on the clinical application of efficient intelligent chromosomal karyotyping precise auxiliary diagnosis system].

Chromosomal karyotyping analysis has been considered as the gold standard for cytogenetic diagnosis and an effective measure for preventing birth defects. However, conventional karyotyping analysis relies heavily on manual recognition, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. The application of an efficient intelligent chromosomal karyotyping precise auxiliary diagnosis system in clinical practice can significantly reduce the analysis time and greatly improve the efficiency, increase the detection rate for low-percentage mosaicisms, and promote homogenization between laboratories. This can

Experimental paradigms in personality disorder research: A review of covered RDoC constructs, methodological issues, and future directions.

Studies using experimental paradigms have been paramount in research on psychopathological processes in personality disorders (PDs). We review 99 articles that report experimental paradigms and that were published between 2017 and 2021 in 13 peer-reviewed journals. We structure the study content according to the National Institute of Mental Health Research Domain Criteria (RDoC), and report details on demographic variables, experimental design, sample size, and statistical analyses. We discuss unequal representation of the RDoC domains, representativeness of the recruited clinical groups, and

Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus: Review and Considerations for Older Populations.

Though more common earlier in life, increasing attention is being focused on the development of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) in patients with advancing age. Studies show that CLE is more common in older populations than previously thought, and all CLE subtypes are possible in this group. Just like patients in the third or fourth decade of life, CLE may appear alongside or independent of systemic lupus erythematosus. Older populations manifesting CLE for the first time seem to have a lower risk of progression to systemic disease than younger peers, and are more commonly White. CLE must b

Diagnostic ultrasound of the residual limb: A narrative review.

Globally, 57.7 million people lived with traumatic limb loss in 2017, with the prevalence of amputation in the United States alone expected to reach 3.6 million by 2050. Pain is a common complication after limb loss, with up to 59% of patients experiencing residual limb pain (RLP). Although RLP is often due to a structural etiology, it is difficult to treat because the exact structure involved is frequently not apparent on history and physical examination alone. This narrative review aims to summarize the available literature on diagnostic ultrasound of the residual limb and examine the utilit

A longitudinal study investigating the relationships among multicultural receptivity, sense of community, and self-esteem of Korean adolescents.

The relative homogeneity in ethnicity and language of native Koreans and their highly competitive lifestyle, especially among adolescents preparing for college, have limited their solidarity with heterogeneous ethnic groups, which may cause problems in this global era. This study uses the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey to explore the relationships among multicultural receptivity, sense of community, and self-esteem for Korean adolescents over three time points. For this purpose this study conducted an autoregressive cross-lagged path analysis, controlling for covariates such as gender,

Aberrant prefrontal cortical-striatal functional connectivity in children with primary complex motor stereotypies.

Motor stereotypies are rhythmic, repetitive, prolonged, predictable, and purposeless movements that stop with distraction. Although once believed to occur only in children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, the presence and persistence of complex motor stereotypies (CMS) in otherwise typically developing children (primary CMS) has been well-established. Little, however, is known about the underlying pathophysiology of these unwanted actions. The aim of the present study was to use resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate functional connectivity within fron

Achieving Equity in Informed Consent: A Culturally-Informed Perspective for the Consideration and Consent of Minority Patients for Electroconvulsive Therapy.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is highly efficacious to treat severe depression in older adults. Yet, patients of ethnic and racial minorities are consistently underrepresented amongst those who receive ECT across all age groups. One strong hypothesis to explain this disparity is that minority patients are less likely to trust medical professionals and are therefore less likely to consent for ECT. Increasing participation of depressed, elderly, minority patients is uniquely challenging. Senior minority individuals have survived decades of medical and social injustices that no other demographi

A Systematic Review of Psychiatric and Psychosocial Comorbidities of Genetic Generalised Epilepsies (GGE).

Psychiatric disorders and associated poor psychosocial outcomes are recognised to be a common sequelae of epilepsy. The extent to which this is true of genetic generalised epilepsies (GGE), particularly syndromes other than juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is unclear. This systematic review synthesises findings regarding psychiatric and associated comorbidities in adults and children with GGE. Systematic review yielded 34 peer-reviewed studies of psychiatric and psychosocial outcomes in adults and children with GGE. Clinically significant psychiatric comorbidity was reported in over half of a
