Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) cells, with their defective double-strand break (DSB) repair processes, exhibit high sensitivity to low-LET radiation such as X-rays irradiation and gamma beams. Whole cells of Mycobacterium phlei were shown to actively accumulate proline, leucine, lysine, tryptophan, histidine, glutamine, and glutamic acid to different steady state levels. Topical application of a 2.5 per cent indomethacin (IM) solution to the sunburned skin of humans and guinea pigs resulted in a marked decrease in ultraviolet light (UVL) -induced erythema. In humans, a decrease in skin temperatute and hyperalgesia to near normal levels was also observed. Epidermal responses to UVL injury such as keratinocyte cell death and altered DNA synthesis proceeded unmodified by IM. Although many chemicals, including cocarcinogens, DNA-binding agents, and steroids, inhibit repair replication of ultraviolet-induced damage to DNA in human lymphocytes and proliferating cells in culture, none of these chemicals is specific. Our results show that all the chemicals than they inhibit repair replication. There is thus no cocarcinogens are specific inhibitors of DNA repair or that any of the chemicals studied might be useful adjuncts to tumor therapy merely because of specific inhibition of radiation repair mechanisms.

Actively induced experimental autoimmune thyroiditis in inbred Lewis rats was comparable using standard Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) and Perrin's modification of FCA. However, adoptively transferred disease using lymph node cells from rats immunized with Perrin's FCA was significantly more severe. With this adjuvant, and pertussis vaccine as co-adjuvant, transfer was uniformly successful when at least 480 × 106 lymph node cells were taken 10 days after immunization and recipients were killed 3 days after transfer.
