Eustachian tube-tensor veli palatini muscle-cranial base relationships in children and adults: an osteological study.

OBJECTIVE: The vector relationships between the Eustachian tube, Tensor veli palatini muscle and cranial base constrain the efficiency of middle ear pressure-regulation and are required parameters for computational modeling of Eustachian tube function. Here, those relationships were reconstructed from skulls and compared between children and adults. METHOD: Reconstructions were made using modifications of previously described techniques for 18 child skulls aged 3-4 years and 20 adult skulls (10 females, 10 males; >18 years). Measured and calculated variables were compared between groups using

Creating morphological diversity in reptilian temporal skull region: A review of potential developmental mechanisms.

Reptilian skull morphology is highly diverse and broadly categorized into three categories based on the number and position of the temporal fenestrations: anapsid, synapsid, and diapsid. According to recent phylogenetic analysis, temporal fenestrations evolved twice independently in amniotes, once in Synapsida and once in Diapsida. Although functional aspects underlying the evolution of tetrapod temporal fenestrations have been well investigated, few studies have investigated the developmental mechanisms responsible for differences in the pattern of temporal skull region. To determine what the

New reconstruction and morphological description of a Homo erectus cranium: skull IX (Tjg-1993.05) from Sangiran, Central Java.

Skull IX (Tjg-1993.05) was unearthed from the upper stratigraphic zone (Bapang-AG levels) of the hominin-bearing sequence in Sangiran. This remarkably complete cranial specimen of Homo erectus from the early Pleistocene of Java preserves substantial portions of the vault and face. However, the distortion present in the original reconstruction has hampered detailed documentation of its morphological characteristics. We here report a new reconstruction of Skull IX that successfully recovers the original morphology and significantly differs from previous reconstructions. Detailed morphological de

The utility of 3D medical imaging techniques for obtaining a reliable differential diagnosis of metastatic cancer in an Iron Age skull.

In this report we present a case of neoplastic disease affecting an Iron Age skull that provides some of the earliest evidence of metastatic cancer (MC) in Western Europe. The cranium comes from the indigenous site of Baucina (Palermo, Sicily) and was recovered in a multiple burial context dated to the 6th-5th centuries BCE. The skull was attributed to an adult female and was characterized by numerous perforating lytic lesions. CT and 3D imaging analyses were crucial for obtaining a diagnosis of MC. Based on the morphology of the lytic lesions and the biological profile of our specimen, we can

Automated pediatric brain tumor imaging assessment tool from CBTN: Enhancing suprasellar region inclusion and managing limited data with deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Fully automatic skull-stripping and tumor segmentation are crucial for monitoring pediatric brain tumors (PBT). Current methods, however, often lack generalizability, particularly for rare tumors in the sellar/suprasellar regions and when applied to real-world clinical data in limited data scenarios. To address these challenges, we propose AI-driven techniques for skull-stripping and tumor segmentation. METHODS: Multi-institutional, multi-parametric MRI scans from 527 pediatric patients (n = 336 for skull-stripping, n = 489 for tumor segmentation) with various PBT histologies were

Beyond the Dura - Massive Hyperostotic Response from a Convexity Meningioma: Systematic Review & Illustrative Case Example.

Introduction Meningiomas account for approximately 41% of primary CNS neoplasms, a minority of which are associated with paracrine-induced cranial hyperostosis. We report a unique systematic review of this rare phenomenon alongside an illustrative case of a woman with 14 years of progressive pan-calvarial hyperostosis attributable to a bilateral parasagittal meningioma. Methods A novel case of massive cranial hyperostosis treated surgically and an associated PRISMA-compliant systematic review are presented. Searches of OVID MEDLINE and EMBASE (keywords "Hyperostosis" and "Meningioma") on April

Bilateral ossification of the carotico clinoid ligament: clinical and surgical considerations.

INTRODUCTION: The carotico clinoid foramen (CCF) is an anomalous foramen that is formed due to ossification of carotico clinoid ligament (CC … iological investigations and might pose difficulty in neurosurgical access and interventions in the skull base. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the modest prevalence of carotico clinoid ligament across all major races, preoperative recognition of the same in imaging studies is warranted before approaching any parasellar intra- cranial lesions.

Repair of Frontoethmoidal Encephalocele in the Philippines: An Account of 30 Cases Between 2008-2013.

BACKGROUND: Frontoethmoidal encephalocele is a congenital abnormality of the anterior skull base involving herniation of cranial contents through a midline skull defect. Patency of the foramen cecum, along with other multifactorial variables, contributes to the development of frontoethmoidal encephaloceles. Because of limited resources, financial constraints, and lack of surgical expertise, repair of frontoethmoidal encephaloceles is limited in developing countries. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2013 an interdisciplinary team composed of neurosurgeons, craniofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists, pl…

Development of convergent adaptations reveal highly conserved early ontogenetic skull shape in fishes with amphibious vision.

The development of skeletal elements in fish is strongly influenced by the functional demands and environmental constraints they face during different life stages but mostly occurs during their larval development. One example of late modifications within the skeletal system is the adaptation of the skull and eye morphology that allows for amphibious vision in the four-eyed fishes Anableps spp. Another species that is equally capable of simultaneous aquatic and aerial vision, Rhinomugil corsula, has been widely neglected in this field of research, although it presents great opportunities for co
