Boredom and psychotic disorders: cognitive and motivational issues.

CHRONIC BOREDOM and the conditions that induce boredom are associated with a host of undesirable outcomes. It is proposed that the course and treatment of schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses (SMI) that require extended care in community-based treatment facilities are often complicated by such outcomes. Brief case studies are used to illustrate how sustained boredom can contribute to (1) postpsychotic mood disturbances, (2) increased risk-taking and substance-seeking behaviors in the residual phases of the illness, (3) the exacerbation of positive symptoms such as paranoia and hallu

Promoting sexuality across the life span for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Sexuality is a human right that is important to all individuals regardless of age, gender, orientation, or developmental level. Sexuality is closely related to a person's self-concept and self-esteem. Individuals with I/DD have a right to sexuality and sexual expression. Nevertheless, persons with I/DD have historically been denied this right, and many structural and attitudinal barriers exist to their healthy sexuality. Paradigms in sexuality education have shifted toward recognizing sexuality as a human right, a major life resource, and an integral part of one's makeup. To broadly address th

Risks factors for homelessness among people with psychotic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although it is widely accepted that rates of severe mental illness amongst single homeless people are high, little is known about the reasons these individuals become homeless. This study aimed to identify risk factors for homelessness among people with psychotic disorders. METHODS: A matched case-control study of homeless and never homeless people with psychotic disorders was carried out, with respondents recruited from mental health services (N = 39 pairs). Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and from medical records. RESULTS: A number of social and behavioural ri

[Can psychosomatic concepts make a contribution in surgery?].

All medical reasoning and action is based on a medical theory. Johannes Müller, the renowned 19th century physiologist, stated: "What we experience with our senses is not a mirror of objects characteristics, but rather depends on the living organism's interpretation of sense-receptor stimulation." A mechanistic model of medicine which does not reflect on and include individual reality and the influence of personality and personal history subjects patients to the danger of surgery; psychosomatic concepts reduce this danger. If the surgeon integrates (not adds!) the psychological and social dime

The moral challenge of children at risk: protective policies and pediatrics. A report of the Children's Services, Inc. Task Force of Greater Cleveland.

Social workers and pediatricians are among the professionals who share a society-wide concern with current public policies regarding the placement of children at extreme risk. A healthcare professional may successfully treat a child, only to learn later that this same child was the victim of a tragic incident of domestic violence after returning home. Such events are not uncommon, create considerable frustration for pediatricians, and demand an integrated interprofessional and interdisciplinary response. This report emerged from 6 months of task force dialogue with leaders of children's servic

Reduction of severe behavior problems in the community using a multicomponent treatment approach.

Problem behavior often prevents community integration of people with developmental disabilities. Therefore, we evaluated a multicomponent approach for remediating problem behavior in public community settings (specifically, supermarkets). We selected treatments based on hypotheses about the variables controlling the problem behavior (hypothesis-driven model). The multicomponent intervention included choice making, embedding, functional communication training, building tolerance for delay of reinforcement, and presenting discriminative stimuli for nonproblem behavior. Treatment progress was mon

Effect of labeling and teacher behavior on children's attitudes.

Seventy-eight fourth-grade subjects from a rural school containing an integrated special-education program viewed one of two videotapes that depicted a child demonstrating various kinds of academic and social behavior. On one tape, the teacher reacted positively to the child's behavior; on the other, negatively. The subjects were told that the child on the tape was either a "normal," mentally retarded, or learning-disabled fourth grader. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of two teacher conditions (positive or negative) and one of three labeling conditions. After viewing the videotape,

LGBTQIA+ sexual health: a SITCC clinical framework for integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy and sexual medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQIA+) individuals experience significant sexual health disparities shaped by minority stress processes, trauma exposure, mental health burden, and historically heteronormative and cisnormative clinical frameworks. Although international guidelines, standards of care, and professional guidance documents increasingly endorse affirmative and evidence-informed care, their integration into routine sexual medicine and psychotherapeutic practice remains inconsistent, particularly in the assessment and clinical management of sexual dysfunctions in LGBTQIA+

Nursing home residents' perspectives on oral health: An in-depth interview study.

BACKGROUND: Oral health is associated with general health and care dependency, but is often neglected in nursing homes. Integration of oral care into general care is necessary, but is hampered by multiple barriers at different levels. This study is part of research into the implementation of the new Oral Health Section for use within the interRAI Long-Term Care Facilities instrument, which is used to assess care needs of nursing home residents. This new Oral Health Section evaluates nine aspects of oral health and results in two Collaborative Action Points. OBJECTIVE: To identify residents' p

Learning from the community: early medical students' territory-based immersion with community health agents in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Early immersion of medical students in Primary Health Care (PHC) settings is vital for fostering socially accountable medical education. In Brazil, PHC is territorially organised, and Community Health Agents (CHAs) play a central role in mediating healthcare delivery. However, pedagogical descriptions of supervised, CHA-led student immersion experiences remain limited. This study addresses this gap by presenting an interpretive qualitative analysis of a structured, territory-based immersion designed for first-year medical students. METHODS: Between March and October 2025, seventy-

Measuring Fatigue in Multiple Sclerosis: A Rapid Review.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is one of the most prevalent and debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS), as people with MS describe it. It has a complex pathogenesis and often precedes the clinical symptoms of MS and potentially indicates disease progression. Given its prevalence, impact, and intricate connections to disease pathology, accurate measurement is crucial to manage and study fatigue in people with MS; however, current measurements often lack content validity. A mismatch between key aspects of fatigue and existing fatigue scales will limit these scales' ability to capture the full sco

Exploring Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in youth mental health: reflections from researchers and young people.

BACKGROUND: Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) promotes inclusive, anticipatory, and reflexive research practices that respond to societal needs. While widely applied in technological fields, its application in youth mental health remains limited. This study aimed to explore how RRI principles are understood and enacted within a large interdisciplinary programme on digital youth mental health in the United Kingdom, focusing on the perspectives of both researchers and young people. METHODS: An online survey was conducted with 21 researchers and 5 young people (mean age = 21 years, stand

Feasibility of the Golf Recreational Exercise for Enhanced Survivorship in prostate cancer survivors undergoing hormone therapy.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) survivors undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) experience significant physical and psychosocial side effects that negatively impact quality of life. Although exercise is effective in mitigating these effects, adherence to traditional programs remains low. The Golf Recreational Exercise for Enhanced Survivorship (GREENS) program was developed as a novel multimodal recreational activity (MRA) integrating structured exercise with golf to enhance engagement and sustainability. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of the GREENS program in PCa survivors

Embodied Sensory Deprivation Hypothesis (ESDH): An Evolutionary Model of Sensory Malnutrition Linking Interoceptive Dysregulation, Anxiety, and Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction.

The human nervous system evolved in environments characterized by continuous exposure to rich, multimodal bodily inputs, including locomotion, manual activity, physical effort, social touch, sexual contact, environmental variability, thermal fluctuations, and complex proprioceptive challenges. In contrast, modern lifestyles have progressively reduced many of these embodied sensory exposures through sedentarism, automation, climate-controlled environments, cushioned footwear, reduced manual labor, digital socialization, and diminished physical contact. Here, we propose the Embodied Sensory Depr

Development of BreeZe: a self-management support intervention for burn survivors informed by evidence, theory, and stakeholder co-creation.

BACKGROUND: Following a severe burn injury, individuals embark on a lifelong process of managing and integrating the physical, psychological, and social consequences, including functional limitations, fatigue, altered body image, and psychological trauma. To aid in this process, healthcare professionals can provide self-management support. To date, however, no self-management support intervention has been developed to meet the unique needs and preferences of burn survivors within the context of burn aftercare. In this article, we describe the process of developing a self-management support int

Reimagining Dementia Care: A Complex Intervention Systematic Review on Optimising Social Prescribing (SP) for People Living With Dementia (PLWD) in the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is a complex medical condition that poses significant challenges to healthcare systems and support services. People living with dementia (PLWD) often face complex needs, exacerbated by social isolation and difficulty accessing support. Social prescribing (SP) has been increasingly integrated into the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) as a means to connect individuals with non-clinical services to address these challenges. However, current research provides limited detail on specific SP interventions tailored to dementia care, leaving gaps in understanding th

Suubi4Her: a study protocol to examine the impact and cost associated with a combination intervention to prevent HIV risk behavior and improve mental health functioning among adolescent girls in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Asset-based economic empowerment interventions, which take an integrated approach to building human, social, and economic capital, have shown promise in their ability to reduce HIV risk for young people, including adolescent girls, in sub-Saharan Africa. Similarly, community and family strengthening interventions have proven beneficial in addressing mental health and behavioral challenges of adolescents transitioning to adulthood. Yet, few programs aimed at addressing sexual risk have applied combination interventions to address economic stability and mental health within the tradi
