Maternal self-perceptions of well-being and of satisfaction and competence in the parental role were examined in 50 mothers of children diagnosed with spina bifida. Adult companionship and social support were found to be highly correlated with maternal satisfaction, while quality of family environment significantly predicted maternal competence and well-being.

[Klinefelter syndrome in 1993. Results of a multicenter study on 58 cases and review of the literature].

A retrospective multicenter study found 58 cases of Klinefelter syndrome of which 23 (39%) were diagnosed before puberty. Although as common as Down syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome is underdiagnosed and often recognized only in adulthood. Suggestive manifestations in infants, children, and teenagers include facial dysmorphism, micropenis, and delayed speech and should lead to examination of the karyotype. Early recognition of Klinefelter syndrome could be achieved by routinely measuring the size of the testes in school-boys aged 11 to 15 years and performing a karyotype in boys with a volume of

Relation of childhood socioeconomic status and family environment to adult metabolic functioning in the CARDIA study.

OBJECTIVE: Low SES and a conflict-ridden, neglectful, or harsh family environment in childhood have been linked to a high rate of physical health disorders in adulthood. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate a model of the pathways that may help to explain these links and to relate them to metabolic functioning (MF) in the Coronary Artery Risk Development In Young Adults (CARDIA) dataset. METHODS: Participants (n = 3225) in the year 15 assessment of CARDIA, age 33 to 45 years, completed measures of childhood socioeconomic status (SES), risky early family environment (RF),

From exclusion to care: Colonial society and the treatment of mentally ill women in the Federated Malay States, 1930-1950.

This article examines the shift in social reactions toward women with mental illness in the Federated Malay States between 1930 and 1950, tracing the complex intersections between colonial medical policy, gender norms, and community attitudes. Using archival sources such as British medical department reports, asylum records, and administrative correspondence, the study identifies three distinct phases in public responses: exclusion and isolation (1930-1933), growing reliance on institutional treatment (1936-1940s), and the emergence of limited social support (1950s). In the early period, menta…

Disclosure of HIV Positive Status and Network Characteristics Among a Cohort of People Living with HIV in Western Kenya.

Disclosure of HIV serostatus is critical in managing the health and well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), yet the decision to disclose is shaped by complex interpersonal and contextual factors. The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of HIV status disclosure and social support, and to characterize disclosure networks among a cohort of PLWHA in Kenya. We conducted a cross-sectional egocentric social network analysis of 174 PLWHA and their network members to examine whether characteristics of participants (egos), their networks, and network members (alters) were associated…
