The principles according to modern views and practical needs of classification of acute leukemia are discussed on the basis of morphological properties of the leukemic cells after panoptic staining and of their cytochemical reactions. This form of classification gives some indications for the choice of treatment and for the prognosis. It is also the permission for the evaluation of therapeutic results, as are the other factors relevant for the prognosis.

The fine structure is illustrated of plasma cells containing Russell bodies. The material is from chronic inflammatory cell infiltrates in human gastric mucosa and thyroid glands in Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It is noted that the Russell bodies lie in distended cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum and are easily distinguished from less electron-dense ;secretory granules' covered by a smooth membrane that are situated in the Golgi complex.

Two methods used for the electron microscopic detection of glycoproteins were applied to a variety of cell types in the rat; one involved successive treatment of sections with periodic acid, chromic acid, and silver methenamine; and the other, a brief treatment with a chromic acid-phosphotungstic acid mixture. Enzyme-altered foci (EAF) develop in rat liver in response to carcinogen treatment. Our hypothesis is that EAF adapt to genotoxic stimuli by lowering their expression of p53 and that such decreased p53 expression confers a growth advantage on the hepatocytes present in EAF.
