Inhibitory failures in cocaine use disorder: Not paying attention when there is a need to be cautious.

BACKGROUND: Stimulant use disorders, such as cocaine use disorder, are associated with significant impairment in inhibitory control, which has in turn been linked to difficulties maintaining abstinence following treatment. Here, we combine the Dynamic Belief Model (DBM) and a Hierarchical Drift Diffusion Model (HDDM) to examine whether individuals with cocaine use disorder have both strategic response updating and tactical speed accuracy trade-off problems during inhibitory control. METHODS: Twenty-seven individuals with cocaine use disorder and twenty-seven healthy control participants compl

Substance use and suicide outcomes among self-injured trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates alcohol (AUD) or substance (SUD) use disorders and acute alcohol or drug use serve as risk factors for suicidal behaviors and death both distally and proximally to a suicidal event. However, limited research has investigated these relationships among medically serious suicide attempters at the time of injury without relying on cohorts of substance users only or by examining suicide decedent characteristics. METHODS: Data were collected from the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) for 2017. The sample comprised patients who engaged in suicidal and self-injurious act

Poisonings by substances of abuse at the Oslo Accident and Emergency Outpatient Clinic 2014-18.

BACKGROUND: Poisonings by substances of abuse are potentially dangerous and indicate risky substance use behaviour. To be prepared to handle patients with poisonings by substances of abuse, we need updated knowledge about the kinds of substances we can be expected to encounter. Most substance use-related poisonings in Oslo are treated at the OAEOC, and we describe the poisonings observed there in the period 2014-2018. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We included all patients treated for poisoning by substances of abuse at the OAEOC in the years 2014-18, with the exception of lone ethanol poisonings. For

VOICES: An efficacious trauma-informed, gender-responsive cannabis use intervention for justice and school-referred girls with lifetime substance use history.

BACKGROUND: Girls have unique developmental pathways to substance use and justice system involvement, warranting gender-responsive intervention. We tested the efficacy of VOICES (a 12-session, weekly trauma-informed, gender-responsive substance use intervention) in reducing substance use and HIV/STI risk behaviors among justice- and school-referred girls. METHODS: Participants were 113 girls (Mage = 15.7 years, SD = 1.4; 12 % White, 19 % Black, 15 % multi-racial; 42 % Latinx) with a history of substance use referred from juvenile justice (29 %) and school systems (71 %). Polyvictimization and Substance Use Among Sexual Minority Cisgender Women.

Violent victimization and substance use are higher among sexual minority cisgender women (SMCW) than heterosexual cisgender women. Unknown, however, is how polyvictimization-experiencing multiple types of violent victimization-affects substance use among SMCW. Purpose/Objectives: This study explores the relationship between polyvictimization and substance use among a small sample of SMCW. Methods: An exploratory secondary data analysis was conducted on data from a convenience sample of 115 SMCW currently in relationships (70.4% lesbian, 73.9% non-Hispanic white) via a cross-sectional survey. Use of urinary naloxone levels in a single provider practice: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Urine drug monitoring for medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) such as buprenorphine can help to support treatment adherence. The practice of introducing unconsumed medication directly into urine (known as "spiking" samples) has been increasingly recognized as a potential means to simulate treatment adherence. In the laboratory, examination of the ratios of buprenorphine and its metabolite, norbuprenorphine, has been identified as a mechanism to identify "spiked" samples. Urine levels of naloxone may also be a novel marker in cases where the combination buprenorphine-naloxone

Sexual Activity and Substance Use Among Adolescents and Young Adults Receiving Cancer Treatment: A Report from the PRISM Randomized Controlled Trial.

Purpose: Despite health implications, sexual activity and substance use among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) receiving cancer treatment are understudied. Methods: AYAs 12-25 years of age participated in a randomized controlled trial testing the efficacy of a resilience intervention. They were fluent in English and either diagnosed with new cancer (NC) or advanced cancer (AC). At baseline and 6 months, participants self-reported sexual activity and substance use. We describe the percentage of AYAs who endorsed each behavior and a count of total behaviors endorsed by each respondent. We des

Curvilinear associations between sexual orientation and problematic substance use, behavioural addictions and mental health among young Swiss men.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It is well documented that individuals with a minority sexual orientation face greater risks of problematic substance use (e.g. heavy episodic drinking, alcohol use disorder) and mental health problems. Far less is known about how that risk varies within this population and their risk of behavioural addictions. This study estimated the risks of problematic substance use, behavioural addiction and poor mental health across the spectrum of sexual orientation. SAMPLE AND METHOD: A sample of young Swiss men (N = 5294; mean age = 25.5, SD = 1.25; representative of 21 of Switze

Longitudinal Associations Between Sexual Victimization and Substance Misuse Among High School Youth in Colorado.

There are consistently high rates of sexual victimization and substance misuse among youth in the United States. Although there is a known relation between sexual victimization and substance use, there is a gap in the research regarding the magnitude and temporality of these associations. This study examined whether latent classes of sexual victimization and help-seeking attitudes longitudinally predict intentions of future substance misuse 7-10 months later. Students from nine Colorado high schools (N = 533; M = age 16 years) completed surveys across two consecutive school semesters. Latent c

Online Narratives of Methamphetamine Use and Risky Sexual Behavior: Can Shame-Free Guilt Aid in Recovery?

Methamphetamine (meth) use is a recurring public health challenge in the U.S. In 2016, approximately 1.6 million Americans reported using meth. Meth use is associated with a number of adverse outcomes, including those associated with users' sexual health. In particular, meth use is linked to an increased risk for sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies. While studies have examined associations between substance use of various types-including meth use, and shame and guilt-few studies have examined relationships among substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and shame and guilt. Barriers to treatment of infectious and other somatic comorbidity in drug users.

BACKGROUND: Intensive use of illicit drugs in general and drug injecting in particular are associated with higher somatic co-morbidity, especially of infectious aetiology. The treatment participation of drug users is complicated by a number of barriers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: At the end of 2013, a cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted on a non-random sample of 240 drug users (188 men and 52 women) recruited in low-threshold drug services in Prague based on their willingness to participate in the study. Drug injecting sometimes in their lifetime was reported by 237 respondents (98.8

Polysubstance use among frequent marijuana users: an examination of John Henryism Active Coping, psychiatric symptoms, and family social support among African American incarcerated men.

Incarcerated African American men who use marijuana are vulnerable to polysubstance use, which is associated with greater risk for negative health and psychosocial outcomes than marijuana use alone. It is imperative to understand risk and protective factors for polysubstance use among this vulnerable population to inform the development of culturally tailored substance use interventions. The current study examined the association between John Henryism Active Coping (JHAC), family social support, psychiatric symptoms, and polysubstance use among African American incarcerated men who frequently

Misuse of prescription medicines is as prevalent as the use of recreational drugs and novel psychoactive substances in Singapore: an unrecognised public health issue?

INTRODUCTION: Misuse of prescription medicines and the harms associated with such use are growing threats across the world. There is currently, however, limited data on the extent of prescription medicine misuse in Singapore and whether this is a current threat in the country. METHODS: An online survey, limited to 1,000 individuals (aged 21 years and over) who were residents in Singapore, was administered through a survey panel company in September 2015. The survey collected information on participant demographics, and their awareness, self-reported lifetime and past-year misuse of commonly a

Current status of immunotherapies for addiction.

The treatment of substance use disorders has always been challenging because multiple neurotransmitters mediate addiction. However, with smoking being the leading cause of preventable death and the recent opioid epidemic in the United States, the search for novel solutions becomes more imperative. In this review, we discuss the use of antibodies to treat addictions and highlight areas of success and areas that require improvement, using examples from cocaine, nicotine, and opioid vaccines. Through each example, we examine creative problem-solving strategies for developing future vaccines, such
