STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study of personal risk factors for first-time low back pain.
OBJECTIVES: To construct and validate a multivariate model to predict low back pain.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Various physical and psychological factors have been reported to increase the risk of low back pain, but conflicting results may be attributable to inaccurate "clinical" measures and to poorly validated statistical models.
METHODS: A total of 403 health care workers aged 18-40 years volunteered for the study. None had any history of "serious" back pain requiring medical attention or time off

The objective of this study is to analyze the evolution of the vibration perception threshold (VPT) following a short duration exposure to vibration. The literature reports experiments with 3 to 10 min exposure to vibration after which a steady state is not necessarily reached. The temporary threshold shift (TTS) of the VPT is extrapolated from data recorded during the recovery period. The assumption of a linear decrease with the logarithm of time gives erroneous results for the TTS extrapolated at the end of the exposure. 81 experiments were conducted on 9 young subjects without any neurologi

Neurofeedback (NF) is a promising intervention for improvements in motor performance in Parkinson's disease. This NF pilot study in healthy participants aimed to achieve the following: (1) determine participants' ability to bi-directionally modulate sensorimotor beta power and (2) determine the effect of NF on movement performance. A real-time EEG-NF protocol was used to train participants to increase and decrease their individual motor cortex beta power amplitude, using a within-subject double-blind sham-controlled approach. Movement was assessed using a Go/No-go task. Participants completed

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of information regarding visuospatial (VS) and visuomotor (VM) task performance in patients with chronic right fronto-parietal lobe stroke, as the majority of knowledge to date in this realm has been gleaned from acute stroke patients. The goal of this paper is to determine how VS and VM performance in chronic stroke patients compare to the performance of healthy participants.
METHODS: Nine patients with stroke involving the right fronto-parietal region were evaluated against match controls on neuropsychological tests and a computerized visuomotor assessment tas

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The question whether patients with essential tremor (ET) have slowed movements as part of their clinical manifestations is still a matter of controversy. We analyzed basic motor function in patients with ET and in healthy matched controls.
METHODS: We studied 61 patients with ET and 122 age- and sex-matched controls. Evaluation included four timed tests (pronation-supination, finger tapping and movement between two points, all with both hands, and walking test); and three tests performed on a personal computer (speed for pressing repetitively a key - frequency, visual

Previous research with adult animal models links the presence of cortical neuromigrational anomalies (i.e., microgyria similar to that found in brains of dyslexics) with rapid auditory processing (RAP) impairments. RAP impairments are in turn found in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and also in individuals with dyslexia. Gap detection, a simple measure of auditory temporal acuity, appears to be impaired in children with SLI but not in dyslexic adults, even though both groups exhibit impaired processing on more complex, rapid auditory tasks. In the current study, juvenile rats

Although auditory stimuli can enhance target perception and attentional shifting during attentional blink (AB), the effect on restrained eaters facing food and the role of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in this process remain unclear. Experiment 1 used food as the first target (T1) and presented auditory tones synchronized with the second target (T2) to explore sound's effect on AB in restrained eaters with food attentional bias. Results showed auditory tones improved AB, but successful restrained eaters (SRE) still had stronger AB than failed restrained eaters (FRE). This may be due t

PURPOSE: This study investigated cognitive resilience in response to a repetitive motor-cognitive reactive agility exercise in high-level athletes.
METHODS: Thirty-seven (26 males, 11 females) high-level team ball sports athletes (mean age: 25 y) were tested on cognitive executive performance during rest (baseline) as well as immediately following 6 repeated all-out reactive agility runs of varying distances (2 × 50 m, 2 × 100 m, 2 × 150 m) with 90-second break in between. Reaction time, error rate, and inverse efficiency score were calculated using the SKILLCOURT technology to determine cogn

Humans possess a remarkable ability to recognize visual objects with high fidelity, supported by complex neural mechanisms underlying memory retrieval. ERP studies have identified two key neural signatures of recognition memory: the parietal old/new effect and the frontal old/new effect. Despite extensive research on these ERP components, the extent to which these components reflect distinct memory processes remains debated. In the present study, we investigated how repetitive learning modulates these ERP components. Participants repeatedly studied a fixed list of 32 real-world images across u

OBJECTIVE: In addition to a gap detection threshold, an auditory gap detection task also provides information on response time. This study investigated the association of response time from an adaptive gap detection task with two validated measures of cognitive processing speed as well as scores from a cognitive screener, while accounting for the effects of age, peripheral hearing ability, and HIV status.
DESIGN: Participants (age 17-45 years) were from a prospective cohort study in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with normal hearing ability and no reported neurological diseases. The final sample inc

We introduce a novel modulation of broadband sounds which eliminates correlations between all frequency pairs close to the tinnitus frequency, to reduce cross-frequency neural synchrony and thereby quieten tinnitus. Fifty-three unselected participants completed a blinded randomised crossover trial, which was run completely online using their computers or smartphones, comparing active to perceptually-near-identical sham stimuli, comprising two 6-week listening periods and 3-week washout periods. Results showed a significant, persisting, reduction in self-rated tinnitus loudness after the active

Drivers are still required to perform the takeover task in highly automated vehicles. This task, which is cognitively and physically demanding, may present challenges for older adults due to general age-related declines in perception and cognition. Tactile modalities that may not be occupied by many non-driving-related tasks could serve as a potential solution for delivering takeover requests. Among these, directional vibrotactile stimuli presented via a wrist-worn device represent a promising approach. However, the effects of the two common types of directional vibrotactile patterns, dynamic

Individuals with hoarding disorder (HD) typically perform worse than peers on neuropsychological tasks involving visual perception. Functional neuroimaging shows diffusely increased activity in the visual cortex, consistent with inefficient visual processing in HD. The temporal locus of these inefficiencies in HD is unknown. This study examined the temporal unfolding of visual event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to help better define the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying visual dysfunction in HD. Thirty-three individuals with HD and 35 healthy controls (HC) were assessed using a 64-ch

Purpose The study sought to determine whether the onset of canonical vocalizations in children with cochlear implants (CIs) is related to speech perception skills and spoken vocabulary size at 24 months postactivation. Method The vocal development in 13 young CI recipients (implanted by their third birthdays; mean age at activation = 20.62 months, SD = 8.92 months) was examined at every 3-month interval during the first 2 years of CI use. All children were enrolled in auditory-oral intervention programs. Families of these children used spoken English only. To determine the onset of canonical s

Influential theories suggest that humans predict others' upcoming actions by using their own motor system as an internal forward model. However, evidence that the motor system is causally essential for predicting others' actions is meager. Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), we tested the role of the inferior frontal cortex (IFC), in action prediction (AP). We devised a novel AP task where participants observed the initial phases of right-hand reaching-to-grasp actions and had to predict their outcome (i.e., the goal/object to be grasped). We found that suppression by cathoda

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has emerged as a promising tool for modulating cortical oscillations. In previous electroencephalogram (EEG) studies, tACS has been found to modulate brain oscillatory activity in a frequency-specific manner. However, the spatial distribution and hemodynamic response for this modulation remains poorly understood. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has the advantage of measuring neuronal activity in regions not only below the tACS electrodes but also across the whole brain with high spatial resolution. Here, we measured fMRI signal w

The experience of being in control of one's actions and thier outcomes is called the sense of agency. This is a fundamental feature of our human experience, and may underpin important social functions such as morality and responsibility. Sense of agency can be measured explicitly, by asking people to report their experience, or implicitly by recording the perceived time interval between actions and outcomes (intentional binding). The current studies used transcranial direct current stimulation to assess the role of left and right temporoparietal junction in both implicit and explicit sense of

Perceiving the sensory consequences of one's own actions is essential to successfully interact with the environment. Previous studies compared self- (active) and externally generated (passive) movements to investigate the processing of voluntary action-outcomes. Increased temporal binding (intentional binding) as well as increased detection of delays between action and outcome have been observed for active compared to passive movements. Using transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) it has been shown that left hemispheric anodal stimulation decreased the intentional binding effect. However, whet
