In essence, endodontics as a clinical discipline is concerned with the prevention and treatment of pulpal and periapical infection. In recent research the infective process has been investigated as well as the mechanisms by which the pulp and periodontium deal with microbial insults. With regard to the pulp, findings on the hemodynamics of pulpitis suggest that the inflammatory response in this tissue is much less influenced by the special anatomic environment of the tooth than was previously believed. Pulpal diseases are being underdiagnosed, mostly because of inadequate examination methods.

The study comprised 544 persons aged 60 yr or more from two urban Residential Areas and one rural village (including a nursing home) of Beijing area. Overall, the sample accounted for 81% of the total population of elderly aged 60 yr or more in the village/areas so defined. BACKGROUND: Loss-of-function variants in MME (membrane metalloendopeptidase) are a known cause of recessive Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy (CMT). A deep intronic variant, MME c.1188+428A>G (NM_000902.5), was identified through whole genome sequencing (WGS) of two Australian families with recessive inheritance of axonal CMT using the seqr platform. MME c.1188+428A>G was detected in a homozygous state in Family 1, and in a compound heterozygous state with a known pathogenic MME variant (c.467del; p.Pro156Leufs*14) in Family 2.

BACKGROUND: Delayed diagnosis of hypothyroidism may result in atypical presentations. Here, we report a case with decreased serum level and activity of von Willebrand factor due to untreated profound hypothyroidism.
OBSERVATION: A 9-year-old girl, presented with prolonged gingival bleeding after dental extraction. Clinical findings of the case were consistent with hypothyroidism, and the laboratory workup results revealed decreased serum level and activity of von Willebrand factor associated with profound hypothyroidism. Restoration of euthyroidism normalized the coagulation parameters.

Mutations in Mitofusin2 (MFN2) associated with the pathology of the debilitating neuropathy Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2A (CMT2A) are known to alter mitochondrial morphology. Randomly selected 1,611 individuals aged 18 years formed a nationally representative sample from all provinces of Poland. Developmental defects of the enamel (DDE) and caries were assessed using the modified DDE index, molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) Treatment Need Index (MIH-TNI), FDI and WHO criteria by 22 trained and calibrated dentists. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mitofusin 1 (MFN1) and MFN2 are outer mitochondrial membrane fusogenic proteins regulating mitochondrial network morphology. MFN2 mutations cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2A (CMT2A), an axonal neuropathy characterized by mitochondrial fusion defects, which in the case of a GTPase domain mutant, were rescued following wild-type MFN1/2 (MFN1/2WT ) overexpression.
