Self-motion illusions from distorted optic flow in multifocal glasses.

Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are ophthalmic lenses to correct presbyopia by providing improvements of near and far vision in different areas of the lens, but distorting the periphery of the wearer's field of view. Distortion-related difficulties reported by PAL wearers include unnatural self-motion perception. Visual self-motion perception is guided by optic flow, the pattern of retinal motion produced by self-motion. We tested the influence of PAL distortions on optic flow-based heading estimation using a model of heading perception and a virtual reality-based psychophysical experiment.

Cadaveric feasibility study of a teleoperated parallel continuum robot with variable stiffness for transoral surgery.

Robot-assisted technologies are overcoming the limitations of the current approaches for transoral surgeries, which are suffering from limited vision and workspace. As a result, we develop a novel teleoperated parallel continuum robot with variable stiffness for collision avoidance. This paper focuses on the feasibility study on a cadaveric model for the robotic system as a first trial. We introduce the configuration of the robotic system, the description of the processes of the trial, including the setting of the robotic system, the test of stiffness, and the action of the manipulation. The c

Takayasu's arteritis: Ischaemic retinal arterial occlusion as a possible initial presentation.

Ocular manifestations are observed in 25% of patients with Takayasu's arteritis. Its signs and symptoms can be very variable. The case is presented of a 41-year-old woman with progressive vision loss in her right eye secondary to ischaemic retinal arterial occlusion. After a systematic study, a protein purified derivative (PPD) skin test compatible with tuberculosis was found to be the only alteration. After ruling out other causes, and based on the initial suspicion of tuberculous retinal vasculitis, treatment was started with antimicrobial agents and systemic corticosteroids, without any the

Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy: Visual Recovery in a Patient With the Rare m.3890G>A Point Mutation.

A 15-year-old boy experienced painless vision loss in the left eye of unknown duration. Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) was suspected, despite negative testing for the 3 most common pathogenic gene mutations and idebenone 300 mg 3 times daily was prescribed. Nine months later, the patient developed right eye involvement. Complete mitochondrial genome analysis revealed 2 rare variants-m.3890G>A of the MT-ND1 gene and m.8417C>A of the MT-ATP8 gene. The former has been described in severe infantile Leigh syndrome and LHON; the latter is of unknown significance. The patient experienced pr

[Atrial myxoma with clinical signs of systemic inflammatory disease].

Atrial myxomas are detectable in 0.3 % of all autopsies and women are affected three times more often than men. The overall incidence of myxoma is relatively rare with 0.5 per one million inhabitants per year. Clinical signs, such as palpitations, dyspnea, dizziness and syncope or thromboembolic events may be found. Microembolic infarction or a higher expression of interleukin 6 may lead to misdiagnosis, such as vasculitis. This article presents the case of a 25-year-old woman with arthralgia, dysesthesia, staggering vertigo, cutaneous nodules and disturbed vision. Diagnostic procedures did no

The thromboembolic risk in giant cell arteritis: a critical review of the literature.

Giant cell arteritis is a systemic vasculitis characterized by granulomatous inflammation of the aorta and its main vessels. Cardiovascular risk, both for arterial and venous thromboembolism, is increased in these patients, but the role of thromboprophylaxis is still debated. It should be suspected in elderly patients suffering from sudden onset severe headaches, jaw claudication, and visual disease. Early diagnosis is necessary because prognosis depends on the timeliness of treatment: this kind of arteritis can be complicated by vision loss and cerebrovascular strokes. Corticosteroids remain

Persistent ocular motor manifestations and related visual consequences in multiple sclerosis.

Abnormal eye movements in multiple sclerosis (MS) are often persistent and known to be associated with general disability. However, there is no precise knowledge concerning their incidence and resulting visual handicap. The aim of our study was to describe the persistent ocular motor manifestations in MS and relate them to visual functions tested with visual acuity and with a vision-related questionnaire. We selected 24 MS patients complaining of persistent visual disability associated with ocular motor manifestations without any anterior visual pathway deficit. Internuclear ophthalmoplegia wa

Mitochondrial dysfunction due to Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy as a cause of visual loss during assessment for epilepsy surgery.

Assessment for epilepsy surgery may require invasive measures such as implantation of intracranial electrodes or the Wada test. These investigations are commonly well tolerated. However, complications, including visual disturbances of various etiologies, have been reported. Here we describe two patients with pharmacoresistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) who displayed loss of vision in the context of presurgical assessment and in whom mutations associated with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) were detected. Genetic analysis revealed in one patient the frequent mitochondrial G11778A L

Language skills in a child with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy following intrathecal chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The language skills of a male child with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and coincidentally treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with intrathecal chemotherapy at the age of 3 years 8 months were comprehensively evaluated twice over a 6-month period approximately 5½ years after diagnosis of ALL. Despite marked chemotherapy-related leukoencephalopathic changes documented on magnetic resonance imaging, the child presented with stable language skills, which were generally average to above-average based on the normative data from a comprehensive language test battery. Recent clinical findings with memantine should not mean that the idea of neuroprotection in glaucoma is abandoned.

Loss of vision in primary open-angle glaucoma (glaucoma) is caused by retinal ganglion cells dying at a seemingly steady and variable rate in different patients. Present treatments for all glaucoma patients are inadequate and a goal to rectify this is to discover appropriate drugs or chemicals (neuroprotectants) that can be taken orally to slow down retinal ganglion cell death and have negligible side-effects. It was therefore of great disappointment to learn earlier this year that the one clinical trial conducted to test the efficacy of memantine as a neuroprotectant for glaucoma was unsucces

Paradoxical fusion of two images and depth perception with a squinting eye.

Some strabismic patients with inconstant squint can fuse two images in a single eye, and experience lustre and depth. One of these images is foveal and the other extrafoveal. Depth perception was tested on 30 such subjects. Relief was perceived mostly on the fixated image. Camouflaged continuous surfaces (hemispheres, cylinders) were perceived as bumps or hollows, without detail. Camouflaged rectangles could not be separated in depth from the background, while their explicit counterparts could. Slanted bars were mostly interpreted as frontoparallel near or remote bars. Depth responses were mor

Dry eyes: etiology and management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Until recently, the cause of dry eye syndrome was uncertain and the treatment was palliative. Since discovering that dry eyes are caused by inflammation, there has been an abundance of research focusing on anti-inflammatory therapies, other contributing causes, and better diagnostic testing. This review summarizes some of the interesting published research on ocular surface disease over the past year. RECENT FINDINGS: The definition of dry eye now highlights the omnipresent symptom of blurry vision. The re-evaluation of ocular surface staining, tear meniscus height, and vis
