Nasal airway measurements in children treated by rapid maxillary expansion.

BACKGROUND: Rapid maxillary expansion is an orthodontic procedure that is commonly used to widen the maxilla. It is generally admitted that this technique is effective to correct palate narrowing, whereas there has not been agreement on the effect of this procedure in nasal parameters. The availability of a reliable and objective technique to assess the geometry of nasal cavities, such as acoustic rhinometry, stimulated the present investigation. METHODS: Twenty-seven children, undergoing rapid maxillary expansion, were evaluated by rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry. Postero-anterior rad

Experimental verification of the quasi-steady approximation for aerodynamic sound generation by pulsating jets in tubes.

Voice production involves sound generation by a confined jet flow through an orifice (the glottis) with a time-varying area. Predictive models of speech production are usually based on the so-called quasi-steady approximation. The flow rate through the time-varying orifice is assumed to be the same as a sequence of steady flows through stationary orifices for wall geometries and flow boundary conditions that instantaneously match those of the dynamic, nonstationary problem. Either the flow rate or the pressure drop can then be used to calculate the radiated sound using conventional acoustic ra

Deficits of respiratory-cardiac coupling in heavy drinkers.

1. Physiological evidence of chronic alcohol abuse prior to the onset of clinical signs of alcohol dependence is difficult to obtain The purpose of this study was to search for possible non-invasive indicators for chronic alcohol consumption yielding information in addition to conventional biological markers. 2. The authors investigated the relationship between respiratory-cardiac coupling and blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in male subjects who lost their driver's license from drunk driving. 3. We found that subjects who had a high BAC level (0.16-0.31% at the time of offense) show altered

[Differential diagnosis of unilateral hearing loss].

There are two main kinds of hearing disorders: sensorineural and conductive. Sensorineural hearing loss is a common disorder that results from damage to the inner ear in over 95% of all cases; therefore, retrocochlear hearing disorders are rare and cannot be differentiated from sensory losses by clinical symptoms alone. Unilateral hearing loss entails many problems in hearing during the entire life of the affected patients. Conductive deafness has a readily determined etiology in most cases. In contrast, unilateral sensorineural hearing loss requires more refined and extensive investigation. T

Unusual breast lesions: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Unusual lesions of the breast can present a diagnostic challenge. These lesions include systemic diseases, benign tumors, and primary and metastatic malignancies. Lymphadenopathy is the most common mammographic finding associated with collagen vascular disease. Wegener granulomatosis may manifest as an irregular, high-density mass simulating breast cancer. Diabetic fibrous mastopathy manifests at mammography as very dense breast tissue and at ultrasonography (US) as an irregular, hypoechoic mass with striking posterior acoustic shadowing simulating malignancy. Fibromatosis simulates malignancy

Usefulness of heavily T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in patients with cerebellopontine angle tumors.

OBJECTIVE: Heavily T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been reported to be useful for the diagnosis of lesions of the inner ear or its central connections. We evaluated the usefulness of heavily T2-weighted MRI in 18 patients with cerebellopontine angle tumors. METHODS: The lesions were acoustic neuromas in 14 patients and meningiomas in 4 patients. The findings of heavily T2-weighted MRI were compared with those of three-dimensional T1-weighted gradient field echo MRI. RESULTS: An accurate description of the situation of the tumor in the internal auditory canal (IAC) was possib

Calcium and calmodulin inhibit phosphorylation of a novel auditory nerve protein.

The growing use of cochlear prosthetic devices and demonstrations of direct ototoxic insult to spiral ganglion neurons make it imperative to gain an understanding of intracellular biochemical regulation in primary sensory neurons. Calcium and calmodulin regulate many aspects of neuronal cellular physiology through stimulation of protein kinase activity. We have previously demonstrated the presence of calmodulin-dependent protein kinase substrates in the guinea pig modiolus and, additionally, the presence of two proteins (12 kDa and 81 kDa, designated as p12 and p81) whose phosphorylation is bl

[Experimental studies on the suppression of the stapedius reflex in comparison with EMG-results in idiopathic facial paresis].

The recording of intra-aural muscle reflexes elicited by acoustic stimulation is a routine method in clinical audiology. The most important quantitative examinations of the reflex dynamic, i.e. Metz recruitment and reflex decay in low frequencies, allow the judgement of function of the afferent pathway in the stimulated inner ear and acoustic nerve. Quantitative determinations of the efferent branch were carried out by several authors in a few normal subjects and in several patients with multiple sclerosis or facial palsy. Absolute acoustic impedance - a method yielding wide scattering - was u

Frontal-auditory cortical interactions and sensory prediction during vocal production in marmoset monkeys.

The control of speech and vocal production involves the calculation of error between the intended vocal output and the resulting auditory fe … l activity correlated with both vocalization-induced suppression in AC as well as the structure and acoustics of subsequent calls, such as fundamental frequency. Furthermore, bidirectional auditory-frontal interactions emerged during experimentally altered vocal feedback and predicted subsequent compensatory vocal behavior. These results suggest that FC com …

Anatomic development of the upper airway during the first five years of life: A three-dimensional imaging study.

PURPOSE: Normative data on the growth and development of the upper airway across the sexes is needed for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired respiratory anomalies and to gain insight on developmental changes in speech acoustics and disorders with craniofacial anomalies. METHODS: The growth of the upper airway in children ages birth to 5 years, as compared to adults, was quantified using an imaging database with computed tomography studies from typically developing individuals. Methodological criteria for scan inclusion and airway measurements included: head position, histog…

Vowel Formant Dispersion Reflects Severity of Apraxia of Speech.

BACKGROUND: Apraxia of Speech (AOS) has been associated with deviations in consonantal voice-onset-time (VOT), but studies of vowel acoustics have yielded conflicting results. However, a speech motor planning disorder that is not bound by phonological categories is expected to affect vowel as well as consonant articulations. AIMS: We measured consonant VOTs and vowel formants produced by a large sample of stroke survivors, and assessed to what extent these variables and their dispersion are predictive of AOS presence and severity, based on a scale that uses clinical observations to rate gradi…

Time-Dependent Pressure and Flow Behavior of a Self-oscillating Laryngeal Model With Ventricular Folds.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to better understand the pressure-flow behavior of a self-oscillating vocal fold model at various stages of the glottal cycle. METHODS: An established self-oscillating vocal fold model was extended to include the false vocal folds (FVFs) and was used to study time-dependent pressure and velocity distributions through the larynx (including the true vocal folds [TVFs] and FVFs). Vocal fold vibration was modeled with a finite element method, laryngeal flow was simulated with the solution of unsteady Navier-Stokes equations, and the acoustics of the vocal t…
