Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder but not panic disorder at age 15 years increase the risk of depression at 18 years in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) differ in their biology and co-morbidities. We hypothesized that GAD but not PD symptoms at the age of 15 years are associated with depression diagnosis at 18 years. METHOD: Using longitudinal data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) birth cohort we examined relationships of GAD and PD symptoms (measured by the Development and Well-Being Assessment) at 15 years with depression at 18 years (by the Clinical Interview Schedule - Revised) using logistic regression. We excluded adolescents already

Prediction of Areal Bone Mineral Density and Bone Mineral Content in Children and Adolescents Living With HIV Based on Anthropometric Variables.

Children and adolescents living with HIV have low bone mass for age. There are reliable and accurate methods for evaluation of bone mass, however, alternative methods are necessary, especially, for application in limited-resource scenarios. Anthropometry is a noninvasive and low cost method that can predict bone mass in healthy youths. The aim of the study was to develop predictive equations for bone mineral content and bone mineral density in children and adolescents living with HIV based on anthropometric variables. Forty-eight children and adolescents of both sexes (24 females) from 7 to 17

Developmentally adapted cognitive processing therapy for adolescents and young adults with PTSD symptoms after physical and sexual abuse: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although childhood sexual and/or physical abuse (CSA/CPA) is known to have severe psychopathological consequences, there is little evidence on psychotherapeutic interventions for adolescents and young adults suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Equally sparse are data on moderators of treatment response on PTSD-related epigenetic changes, health care costs and loss of productivity, alterations in cognitive processing, and on how successful interventions affect all of these factors. Early treatment may prevent later (co)morbidity. In this paper, we present a study p

The gaming of concussions: a unique intervention in postconcussion syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To present the case of 2 adolescent high school student-athletes who developed postconcussion syndrome with protracted and limiting visual complaints that markedly affected academic, social, and athletic activity for a year after the onset of symptoms. Both had significant improvement soon after a unique intervention was administered. BACKGROUND: A 14-year-old female soccer and softball player sustained 2 concussions in the same week. She had persistent symptoms for a year that affected her grades and precluded athletic participation. A 15-year-old male football player sustained a

Psychiatric disease in late adolescence and young adulthood. Foetal programming by maternal hypothyroidism?

OBJECTIVE: Lack of maternal thyroid hormones during foetal brain development may lead to structural abnormalities in the brain. We hypothesized that maternal hypothyroidism during the pregnancy could programme the foetus to development of psychiatric disease later in life. DESIGN: Danish nationwide register study. PARTICIPANTS: Singletons live-born 1980-1990. MEASUREMENTS: Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) with 95% confidence interval for offspring redemption of ≥2 prescriptions of a psychiatric drug from age 15 to 31 years. RESULTS: Among 542

Dairy food consumption and body weight and fatness studied longitudinally over the adolescent period.

OBJECTIVE: Although research suggests that adolescents, particularly girls, may avoid dairy products due to concerns that these foods are 'fattening,' the longitudinal relation between consumption of dairy foods and relative weight status during adolescence has not been explored. Using data from the MIT Growth and Development Study, a longitudinal study designed to assess the metabolic, dietary, and behavioral factors that predict changes in body composition with growth and development in girls during the adolescent period, the current analysis was undertaken to examine the relation of dairy f

Validity of self-assessment of sexual maturation in adolescent male patients with cystic fibrosis.

PURPOSE: Self-assessment of sexual maturity by healthy male adolescents has been found to correlate closely with physician ratings. Data are lacking, however, in adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF), where an altered body image may affect self-assessment. Delayed sexual maturation occurs in many patients with CF, particularly those with severe disease. We hypothesized that self-assessment of sexual maturation by adolescents with CF would agree with physician ratings. METHODS: Using Tanner's standard photographs for pubic hair (PH) and genital (G) development, we compared self-assessment of s

Neurofunctional Correlates of Hostility in Adolescents With Externalizing Disorders: Implications for Clinical Assessment and Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Previous neuroimaging studies have rarely investigated hostility as a distinct cognitive-emotional dimension of aggression. Most research has focused on overall aggressive behavior without differentiating hostility from other behavioral components. Specifically, the neural correlates associated with hostility in adolescents diagnosed with externalizing disorders have not been thoroughly investigated. To fill this void, the current research focused on hostility- a fundamental psychological element of violence-and its neurofunctional foundations in adolescents. METHODS: This study

The Hidden Injury: Behavioral Health's Role in Pediatric Orthopaedic Outcomes-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The psychological toll of injuries in youth athletes is often overlooked, even while these injuries continue to increase in incidence. Research exploring the role that psychology plays in recovery from these injuries demonstrates that not addressing them can be detrimental to return-to-sport and postoperative outcomes. There are limited studies investigating these questions and the role that integrated care pathways can play in optimizing these outcomes in pediatric athletes undergoing orthopaedic surgeries. METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed, Cochrane, and Ovid MEDLINE was do

Contributions of Genetic Liability and the COVID-19 Pandemic to Rising Psychopathology Among Youth in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health issues were surging during COVID-19 pandemic. Yet it is unclear whether the pandemic amplified pre-existing vulnerabilities for psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Using the longitudinal data from Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study© (n = 7,560, 2~3 waves of assessments before pandemic and 2~3 waves after first nation-wide pandemic lock-down), we evaluated associations of the pandemic, genetic liabilities to psychiatric disorders, and their interactions with 20 different measures of psychopathology. Genomic common factor models aggregated genom

Investigation of Sickle Cell Retinopathy in Pediatric and Adolescent Patients Enrolled in a Large Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Sickle cell disease results in vaso-occlusion and hemolysis, leading to ophthalmic and systemic complications. In the eye, these processes initiate retinal ischemia and neovascularization resulting in sickle cell retinopathy (SCR). Hydroxyurea therapy increases fetal hemoglobin (reducing ischemia), and chronic blood transfusions (CTXN) reduce strokes in children with abnormally high intracranial vessel velocities. It is not known if these treatments reduce retinopathy. Our hypothesis is that hydroxyurea and CTXN lower the risk of the development and slow the progression of retinopathy

Early targeted heart rate aerobic exercise versus placebo stretching for sport-related concussion in adolescents: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Sport-related concussion is a public health problem, particularly in adolescents. Quality of life is reduced in adolescents with persistent post-concussive symptoms (symptoms >28 days). We replicated a previous randomised controlled trial to validate the safety, efficacy, and generalisability of, and objective adherence to, prescribed early targeted heart rate subsymptom threshold aerobic exercise compared with placebo-like stretching exercise for adolescent recovery from sport-related concussion and for reducing the risk of persistent post-concussive symptoms. METHODS: This rando

Adolescent Helicobacter pylori Screening for Gastric Cancer Prevention: Current Evidence and Future Perspectives.

Helicobacter pylori infection is a major cause of gastric cancer, and eradication before advanced precancerous gastric changes develop provides a biologically plausible opportunity for primary prevention. Adolescence represents a strategically favorable, although not universally established, window for intervention in Japan because persistent childhood-acquired infection can be identified before extensive mucosal damage while school-based programs provide organized access to defined birth cohorts. This narrative review evaluates the evidence supporting population-based adolescent H. pylori scr

Not coping with stress and screen-time: mixed methods.

Mental health problems are increasing among adolescents, where stress, screen time, social media and sleep deprivation are contributing factors. The aim of this study was to explore adolescents' understanding and self-reporting of health for further development of the screening tool HEILUNG. Mixed-method study design based on qualitative (focus groups) and quantitative data (cross-sectional study) was used. The participants in both studies were adolescents in upper secondary schools across Iceland. The framework method was used in the data analysis for the focus groups and descriptive statisti

Digital-Media Use and Mental Health in Children and Adolescents.

Digital media have become a central part of children's and adolescents' daily lives, with increasing usage time and decreasing age of first exposure in recent years. While digital technologies offer opportunities for social participation, access to information, education, and therapeutic support, they are also associated with several risks to mental health. These include problematic use patterns, cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content and hazardous contacts as well as commercial exploitation through manipulative design practices ("dark patterns"). This evidence review summarizes current re

The role of masculinity in HIV disclosure among adolescent South African boys living with HIV.

HIV transmission among adolescents remains a pressing public health challenge in South Africa. Onward HIV disclosure to sexual partners can reduce transmission, but disclosure is low among adolescents. Adherence to hegemonic masculine norms may create a barrier to disclosure among boys. Repeated measures designs are necessary to more accurately capture disclosure, which is an ongoing behavior shaped by multiple processes. 251 South African adolescent boys living with perinatally-acquired HIV and in an intimate relationship were enrolled between 2020-2023. They completed a survey capturing thei

Mentalization-based therapy for personality disorder in adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mentalization-based therapy for adolescents (MBT-A) is a treatment approach that aligns well with dimensional models of personality disorders. This article reviews recent literature on mentalizing and MBT, proposing ways in which findings may inform future research and clinical innovations. RECENT FINDINGS: There have been few new treatment studies and meta-analyses, and the evidence generally does not support the superiority of MBT-A over other well structured treatments for personality disorder in adolescents. Long-term follow-up studies suggest heterotypic continuity of
