Postexercise blood pressure and autonomic responses after aerobic exercise following anodal tDCS applied over the medial prefrontal cortex.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is acknowledged to modulate autonomic cardiac activity and hemodynamic responses at rest and during exercise. However, its potential to optimize postexercise hypotension (PEH) has not been investigated. This study investigated the effects of anodal tDCS applied over the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) upon blood pressure (BP) and heart rate variability (HRV) throughout 60 min following acute aerobic exercise. Fifteen young men (27.5 ± 5.2 yrs; 72.9 ± 8 kg; 170 ± 0.1 cm; 124.1 ± 1.9/67.7 ± 2.1 mmHg) underwent three counterbalanced experimental sess

Heart rate variability in patients with agoraphobia with or without panic disorder remains stable during CBT but increases following in-vivo exposure.

Patients with anxiety disorders have a lower heart rate variability (HRV) than healthy controls. Low HRV is associated with cardiovascular disease and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The aim of the present study was to investigate if HRV in patients with agoraphobia with or without panic disorder can be influenced by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). 73 patients with agoraphobia with or without panic disorder were included in the study. Heart rate (HR) and HRV were recorded at rest before and after CBT and during in-vivo exposure. No changes in HR and HRV were observed thr…

Eye Tracking Effort Expenditure and Autonomic Arousal to Social and Circumscribed Interest Stimuli in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The social communicative deficits and repetitive behaviours seen in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may be affected by altered stimulus salience and reward attribution. The present study used eye tracking and a behavioural measure to index effort expenditure, arousal, and attention, during viewing of images depicting social scenes and subject-specific circumscribed interests in a group of 10 adults with ASD (mean age 25.4 years) and 19 typically-developing controls (mean age 20.7 years) Split-plot and one-way repeated measures ANOVAs were used to explore results. A significant difference betwee

Reduced gray matter volume and respiratory dysfunction in Parkinson's disease: a voxel-based morphometry study.

BACKGROUND: The respiratory dysfunction of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) has drawn increasing attention. This study evaluated the relationship between gray matter volume (GMV), as determined by voxel-based morphometry (VBM), and respiratory dysfunction in patients with PD and correlated it with systemic inflammatory markers. METHODS: Whole-brain VBM analysis was performed on 3-dimensional T1-weighted images in 25 PD patients with abnormal pulmonary function (13 men, 12 women; mean age: 62.9 ± 10.8 years) and, for comparison, on 25 sex- and age-matched PD patients with normal pulmonar

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity syndrome caused by fat embolism syndrome.

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity represents an uncommon and potentially life-threatening complication of severe brain injuries, which are most commonly traumatic. This syndrome is a clinical diagnosis based on the recurrent occurrence of tachycardia, hypertension, diaphoresis, tachypnea, and occasionally high fever and dystonic postures. The episodes may be induced by stimulation or may occur spontaneously. Underdiagnosis is common, and delayed recognition may increase morbidity and long-term disability. Trigger avoidance and pharmacological therapy can be very successful in controlling th

Direct Recording of Cardiac and Renal Sympathetic Nerve Activity Shows Differential Control in Renovascular Hypertension.

There is increasing evidence that hypertension is initiated and maintained by elevated sympathetic tone. Increased sympathetic drive to the heart is linked to cardiac hypertrophy in hypertension and worsens prognosis. However, cardiac sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) has not previously been directly recorded in hypertension. We hypothesized that directly recorded cardiac SNA levels would be elevated during hypertension and that baroreflex control of cardiac SNA would be impaired during hypertension. Adult ewes either underwent unilateral renal artery clipping (n=12) or sham surgery (n=15). Two

[EEG spectral characteristics during heart rate variability biofeedback in healthy people].

AIM: To evaluate changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral characteristics during a single session of heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV BF). MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty adolescents, aged 16-17 years, were studied. Adolescents of the BF-group (n=110) conducted HRV BF session to enhance vagal influences on the heart rhythm. Adolescents of the control group (n=40) remained in relaxed resting state. EEG was recorded with eyes closed before and after BF training. EEG absolute spectral power values of parts without artifacts in each frequency band were determined. RESULT

[Nonplatelet Effects of Ticagrelor].

This review summarizes current knowledge concerning "nonplatelet effects of P2Y12 receptor antagonist ticagrelor. We show the experimental and clinical evidence that ticagrelor increases plasma concentration of adenosine as a potential mechanism of additive effects of ticagrelor. In addition, we sought to compare the clinical profile of ticagrelor with pharmacological effects of adenosine and discuss from this point of view the effects of ticagrelor on vascular tone, cardiac electrophysiology, ischemia/reperfusion injury, immunity and inflammatory reactions, peripheral nerves.

Recent advances in the understanding of the mechanisms underlying postural tachycardia syndrome in children: practical implications for treatment.

Postural tachycardia syndrome is defined by a heart rate increment of 40 beats/minute (bpm) (or a heart rate that exceeds 125 bpm) within 10 minutes of change from the supine position to an upright position in the absence of obvious orthostatic hypotension. There are multiple pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie postural tachycardia syndrome, including peripheral denervation, β-receptor supersensitivity, hypovolaemia, and impaired muscle pump. Some children afflicted with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and hypovolaemic dysregulation have been found to have perturbed renin-ang

[A case of paroxysmal sympathetic storm after acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and hypoxic encephalopathy responding to clonidine hydrochloride].

We report the case of a 17-year-old woman with paroxysmal sympathetic storm (PSS), which was successfully treated with clonidine hydrochloride. The patient was hospitalized for acute disseminated encephalomyelitis in June 2006. Dysphagia led to severe aspiration pneumonia in September 2006, and she suffered cardiopulmonary arrest. She survived but had severe brain damage, with her brain MRI showing diffuse hypoxic encephalopathy. From October 2006, she had several episodes of profound tachypnea (> 60/min), tachycardia (160 to 170 beats/min), hypertension (> 140 mmHg), hyperthermia (39°C), and

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity: Autonomic instability and muscle over-activity following severe brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Children who suffer from moderate-to-severe brain injury can develop a complicating phenomenon known as paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH), characterized by autonomic instability and identified clinically as a cluster of symptoms that can include recurrent fever without a source of infection, hypertension, tachycardia, tachypnea, agitation, diaphoresis and dystonia. Studies with adults have demonstrated that this cluster of symptoms is associated with poorer clinical outcomes (prolonged hospitalizations, poorer cognitive and motor function). However, there have been limited

Neuronal chromatolysis in the subgemmal plexus of gustatory papillae in horses with grass sickness.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Diagnosis of equine grass sickness (EGS) can be challenging. We hypothesised that subgemmal plexus neurons are chromatolytic in EGS. If correct, histopathological examination of gustatory papillae biopsies could aid premortem diagnosis of EGS, and EGS could represent a spontaneous model of subgemmal neuronal chromatolysis to facilitate study of the pathology of structures involved in taste. OBJECTIVE: To compare subgemmal plexi and gustatory papillae in EGS and control horses. STUDY DESIGN: Observational study. METHODS: Conventional histology and immunohistoche

Detecting autonomic response to pain in Rett syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify pain response in girls affected by Rett syndrome (RTT) using electrodermal activity (EDA), a measure of skin conductance, reflecting sympathetic activity known to be modulated by physical and environmental stress. METHODS: EDA increase, heart rate (HR) increase and Face Legs Activity Cry Consolability (FLACC) values calculated during venipuncture (invasive) and vital signs collection (non-invasive) events were compared with values calculated during a prior baseline and a RTT clinical severity score (CSS). RESULTS: EDA and HR increase were significantly higher than base

Norepinephrine deficiency in Parkinson's disease: the case for noradrenergic enhancement.

The dramatic response of most motor and some nonmotor symptoms to dopaminergic therapies has contributed to maintaining the long-established identity of Parkinson's disease (PD) as primarily a nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) deficiency syndrome. However, DA neurotransmission may be neither the first nor the major neurotransmitter casualty in the neurodegenerative sequence of PD. Growing evidence supports earlier norepinephrine (NE) deficiency resulting from selective degeneration of neurons of the locus coeruleus and sympathetic ganglia. Dopaminergic replacement therapy therefore would seem to neg
