The reliability and validity of the dichotomous thinking in eating disorders scale.

The Dichotomous Thinking in Eating Disorders Scale (DTEDS) is a short, self-report measure that can be used to assess the presence of a rigid, "black-and-white" cognitive thinking style. It was originally developed for use in a study of psychological predictors of weight regain in obesity. The DTEDS consists of two subscales. Items on the Eating subscale assess dichotomous thinking with regards to eating, dieting or weight, and items on the General subscale assess dichotomous thinking more generally. This study aimed to examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the DTEDS in a

Clinical correlates of psychiatric comorbidity in bipolar I patients.

As we move into the 21st century, cutaneous tuberculosis has re-emerged in areas with a high incidence of HIV infection and multi-drug resistant pulmonary tuberculosis. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, and the BCG vaccine cause tuberculosis involving the skin. True cutaneous tuberculosis lesions can be acquired either exogenously or endogenously, show a wide spectrum of morphology and M. tuberculosis can be diagnosed by acid-fast bacilli (AFB) stains, culture or polymerase chain reaction (PCR). These lesions include tuberculous chancre, tuberculosis verrucosa cutis, lupus vulga

Blockade of cholinergic muscarinic receptors by pirenzepine and GHRH-induced GH secretion in the acute and recovery phase of anorexia nervosa and atypical eating disorders.

In view of the important role played by the cholinergic system in the neural regulation of growth hormone (GH) secretion, the ability of pirenzepine, a selective antagonist of muscarinic cholinergic receptors, to blunt the GH response to GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) was studied in adolescent females with anorexia nervosa in the acute (AN-AP) five AN-AP patients, administration of GHRH 1-40 (1 microgram/kg IV) evoked a significantly higher GH response than in controls at established intervals, whereas in eight AN-RP and seven AED patients it was higher than in controls at only one (150-min) and

Examining the association among eating disorders and borderline personality disorder: evidence from youth in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex psychiatric condition manifest by persistent instability in emotions, relationships, self-perception, and behavior. Eating disorders (EDs) are multifaceted neuropsychiatric conditions involving dysfunctional eating behaviors and psychological impairments, leading to adverse health outcomes and reduced quality of life. They are also associated with some of the highest mortality rates in psychiatry. EDs are typically classified to three main types: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). Personal…

Risk of non-fatal self-harm and premature mortality in the three years following hospitalization in adolescents and young adults with an eating disorder: A nationwide population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders (ED) are associated with high rates of suicide attempts and premature mortality. However, data in large samples of adolescents and young adults are limited. This study aims to assess the risk of self-harm and premature mortality in young people hospitalized with an ED. METHODS: Individuals aged 12 to 25 years old hospitalized in 2013-2014 in France with anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa as a primary or associated diagnosis were identified from French national health records. They were compared to two control groups with no mental disorders, and with any ot…

Frequency of symptoms and the associated factors of eating disorders in a group of dental students in Medellín, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are considered a public health problem. Scientific research has focused on teenagers due to their higher prevalence in this population. However, other groups, such as university students, may be exposed to suffering from EDs due to their academic, social and personal characteristics. Identifying the magnitude of EDs and the associated characteristics may impact the generation of prevention strategies. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to establish the prevalence of the risk of EDs (anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN)) and the associated…

Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders - Development and feasibility evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) are severe psychiatric conditions, characterized by decreased quality of life and high mortality. However, only a minority of patients with ED seek care and very few receive treatment. Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) has the potential to increase access to evidence-based treatments. AIMS: The aims of the present study were to (1) develop and evaluate the usability of an Internet-delivered guided self-help treatment based on Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT-E) for patients with full or subthreshold bulimia nervosa (BN) or bing…

Infra-Low Frequency Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Patients With Chronic Eating Disorder and Comorbid Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The treatment of patients suffering from an eating disorder and a comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder is challenging and often leads to poor outcomes. In a randomized control trial, we evaluated to what extent adding Infra-Low Frequency (ILF) neurofeedback could improve symptom reduction within an established inpatient treatment program. In a randomized two-group design, patients suffering from an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder) and comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (N = 36) were examined while attending an inpatient treatment program in …

Differential mesocorticolimbic responses to palatable food in binge eating prone and binge eating resistant female rats.

Binge eating is a key symptom of many eating disorders (e.g. binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa binge/purge type), yet the neurobiological underpinnings of binge eating are poorly understood. The mesocorticolimbic reward circuit, including the nucleus accumbens and the medial prefrontal cortex, is likely involved because this circuit mediates the hedonic value and incentive salience of palatable foods (PF). Here we tested the hypothesis that higher propensity for binge eating is associated with a heightened response (i.e., Fos induction) of the nucleus accumbens and media…

Neurotransmitter and imaging studies in anorexia nervosa: new targets for treatment.

Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa are disorders of unknown etiology that invariably begin during adolescence and near in time to puberty in young women. These disorders are associated with aberrant eating behaviors, body image distortions, impulse and mood disturbances, as well as characteristic temperament and personality traits. It is well known that malnutrition produces changes in neuroendocrine function. More recently, disturbances in neuronal systems have been found to play a role in the modulation of feeding, mood, and impulse control. These neuronal systems include neuropeptides (CRH, opioi…
