Outbreak of BVDV-1b associated with persistent infection, reproductive losses, and congenital malformations in beef cattle in Southern Brazil.

An outbreak of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in a herd of 218 beef cattle resulted in 15 late-term abortions and the birth of two weak calves. Neonate 1, at 28 days of age, exhibited ataxia and paresis, while Neonate 2, at one day of age, was underdeveloped. Neonate 1 presented with cerebellar hypoplasia, hydrocephalus, and porencephalic cysts. Histological examination revealed foliar dysgenesis and ectopic Purkinje neurons. Neonate 2, weighing 7 kg at birth, showed no histologic lesions. A single fetus at six months was necropsied and showed no gross lesions. However, histopathology reve…

Rumen microbiome profiles of dairy cattle are affected by the presence of, and vaccination against, the abomasal parasitic nematode Ostertagia ostertagi.

Ostertagia ostertagi is a highly prevalent nematode that affects grazing cattle and impacts performance and welfare by reducing appetite and hindering weight gain. Despite its economic significance, the influence of the abomasal parasite O. ostertagi on the rumen microbiome remains unexplored. We examined the effects of subclinical O. ostertagi infection and vaccination on the rumen microbiome at taxonomic and functional levels. In an experimental trial, calves treated with vaccine or adjuvant-only were orally challenged with O. ostertagi larvae daily for 25 days; 4 groups of animals (UNF: unv…

Major differences in the dynamics of haematological and biochemical variables between trypanotolerant and susceptible cattle during Trypanosoma congolense infection.

BACKGROUND: Animal African Trypanosomosis, caused by protozoan blood parasites mainly transmitted by Glossina, is a threat to livestock health in Africa. Whilst African zebu and European taurine suffer from trypanosomosis, West African taurine, such as N'Dama, exhibit trypanotolerance and remain productive in enzootic areas. Trypanosomosis affects haematological and biochemical variables in cattle. However, joint characterization of the temporal dynamics of these variables during trypanosomosis in tolerant or susceptible cattle had yet to be carried out. The purpose of this study was to show p…

Comparative performance of tuberculin and defined-antigen cocktails for detecting bovine tuberculosis in BCG-vaccinated cattle in natural settings.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a threat to cattle health and public safety. The current control programs are hampered by wildlife reservoirs and socioeconomic barriers. Vaccinating cattle with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) effectively reduces transmission, offering a potential solution for controlling bTB. A key requirement for vaccination strategies using BCG is the validation of defined antigens to differentiate infections among vaccinated animals (DIVA). We compared tuberculin with DIVA peptide cocktails (ESAT-6, CFP-10, and Rv3615c) in 67 unvaccinated and 67 BCG-vaccinated cattle exposed to…

Effect of multispecies swards on ruminal fermentation, methane emission and potential for climate care cattle farming - an in vitro study.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock ruminants, particularly methane (CH4), nitrous oxide, and indirectly ammonia (NH3) significantly contribute to climate change and global warming. Conventional monoculture swards for cattle feeding, such as perennial ryegrass or Italian ryegrass, usually require substantial fertiliser inputs. Such management elevates soil mineral nitrogen levels, resulting in GHG emissions and potential water contamination. Mitigating the environmental footprint of these farming practices requires sustainable alternative feeding strategies for cattle production. Mul…

Exploring the impact of high-energy diets on cattle: Insights into subacute rumen acidosis, insulin resistance, and hoof health.

Cattle lameness remains a significant concern, causing economic losses and compromising animal welfare. Claw horn lesions have been identified as a major cause of lameness in dairy cows, but their correlation with high-energy diets and ruminal acidosis remains unclear. Hence, the primary objective of this study was to assess the effects of a high-starch diet and a conventional diet on the rumen environment, acute-phase proteins, and metabolic alterations, with a particular focus on insulin resistance and the consequent implications for the histology of the hooves in Holstein steers. A total of…

Patterns of variation and relationships among fat, protein, and milk yield of individual dairy cattle in a Thai multibreed population.

This study systematically examines the patterns of milk yield (MY, kg), fat (FAT, %), and protein (PROT, %) in a diverse population of Thai multibreed dairy cattle, considering the tropical environment's impact on lactating cows. Using a dataset of 47,205 monthly test-day records from 4,440 first-lactation cows across 446 farms, we analyze variations and interrelationships through mathematical averaging and introduce the fat-to-protein ratio (FPR) to assess acidosis (FPR < 1.1) and ketosis (FPR > 1.5) risks during lactation. Pearson correlation analysis elucidated trait associations. The findi…

First Report of Benzimidazole Resistance in Field Population of Haemonchus contortus from Sheep, Goats and Cattle in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Haemonchus contortus is a globally significant parasitic nematode in ruminants, with widespread resistance to benzimidazole due to its excessive and prolonged use. Given the extensive use of benzimidazole anthelmintics in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we hypothesized that resistance is prevalent. The aim of this study was to identify the presence of anthelmintic resistance to benzimidazole in H. contortus from naturally infected sheep, goats and cattle in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the detection of the Phe/Tyr polymorphism in the amino acid at position 200 of the β-tubulin protein. From 19 locat…

Screening for Japanese Black cattle herds at risk of bovine leukemia virus transmission based on the presence of persistent lymphocytosis.

This study aimed to develop a screening method to identify Japanese Black (JB) cattle farms at high risk of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) transmission. We introduced a recently established lymphocyte count (LC) cut-off to detect cattle with persistent lymphocytosis (PL). To identify high-risk farms, we examined the relationship between the proportion of cattle with PL and the mean blood proviral loads (PVL) per farm. The results showed a strong correlation between the proportion of cattle with high LC, higher than the LC cut-off values for JB cattle, and the mean blood PVL per farm. This indicat…

Resistance to natural tick infestation varies with age and coat and hair traits in a tropically adapted beef cattle breed.

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus causes considerable livestock production losses. Knowledge of the traits that influence tick resistance contributes to the development of breeding strategies designed to improve herd productivity. Within this context, this study evaluated the resistance of Caracu, a tropically adapted cattle breed, to R. microplus. Tick count, hair length, coat thickness, and coat color were evaluated in 202 naturally tick-infested females (cows and heifers) over a period of 18 months. Blood samples were collected from all animals during the winter season for hematological a…

Rosa roxburghii tratt residue: A novel feed resource for cattle indicated by the non-deleterious performance and blood metabolites.

Rosa roxburghii tratt residue (RRTR) is a regional and uncommon byproduct in Guizhou. Little information is available on whether RRTR can be used as feed for ruminants. In this study, the feasibility of using RRTR as a new feed resource for cattle was investigated by chemical composition analysis, in vitro gas production (Trial 1) and animal feeding experiments (Trial 2). In trial 1, compared to the commonly used fruit residues, RRTR had a proximate nutrient level; the in vitro gas production curve and dynamics fell within the normal range. In trial 2, 16 cattle were allocated to the control a…
