A systematic review and meta-analysis of the impact of transcranial direct current stimulation on cognitive function in older adults with cognitive impairments: the influence of dosage parameters.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies have demonstrated the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on cognitive function in the older people. This study further explores the impact of tDCS and its dosage parameters on cognitive enhancement in older people with cognitive impairments. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published through November 2023 were retrieved from databases including PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, EBSCO, and the Cochrane Library. Participants were older adults with cognitive impairments, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a

Advances in Evaluation of Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Cushing's Disease.

Cushing's disease (CD) is a relatively rare disease, characterized by pathological hypercortisolism secondary to excessive adrenocorticotrophic hormone that is secreted by pituitary adrenocorticotrophic hormone adenoma or hyperplasia. In addition to the typical clinical symptoms such as moon face, buffalo hump, and central obesity, the CD patients may also experience mental disorders and cognitive dysfunction. This review mainly focuses on the cognitive state of CD patients, the mechanisms of cognitive impairment caused by high cortisol levels, and the imaging findings (especially magnetic resonance

Structural Fingerprinting of the Frontal Aslant Tract: Predicting Cognitive Control Capacity and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms.

White matter of the human brain is influenced by common genetic variations and shaped by neural activity-dependent experiences. Variations in microstructure of cerebral white matter across individuals and even across fiber tracts might underlie differences in cognitive capacity and vulnerabilities to mental disorders. The frontoparietal and cingulo-opercular networks of the brain constitute the central system supporting cognitive functions, and functional connectivity of these networks has been used to distinguish individuals known as "functional fingerprinting." The frontal aslant tract (FAT)

Eating Disorders in Adolescents and Young Adults: A Program Evaluation of a Canadian Eating Disorder Treatment Program.

BACKGROUND: Current treatments for adolescents with eating disorders (ED) show limited effectiveness, emphasizing the need for enhanced therapeutic approaches. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has emerged as a potential alternative. A derivative of this approach, group cognitive behavioral therapy (G-CBT), has been shown to reduce treatment costs and increase treatment accessibility when compared to CBT. This program evaluation aimed to assess the effectiveness of G-CBT in adolescents and young adults diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) and experiencing comorbid anxi

Verifying the Japanese version of the Healthy Aging Brain Care Monitor self-report tool for evaluating post-intensive care syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) requires the use of multiple assessment tools because it affects multiple domains: Cognitive, Functional, and Behavioural/Psychological. Therefore, this study translated the self-report (SR) version of the Healthy Aging Brain Care Monitor (HABC-M), spanning multiple domains, into Japanese and analysed its reliability and validity in a post-intensive care setting. METHODS: Patients aged 20 years or older and admitted to the adult intensive care unit from August 2019 to January 2021 were included and surveyed by questionnaire. The 21-item Dementia

Specific and generalized neuropsychological deficits: a comparison of patients with various first-episode psychosis presentations.

OBJECTIVE: Overwhelming evidence suggests that compromised neuropsychological function is frequently observed in schizophrenia. Neurocognitive dysfunction has often been reported in other psychotic disorders, although there are inconsistencies in the literature. In the context of four distinct diagnostic groups, the authors compared neuropsychological performance among patients experiencing their first psychotic episode. METHOD: Data were derived from a population-based, case-control study of patients with first-episode psychosis. A neuropsychological test battery was administered to patients

Sleep Interventions and the Prevention of Pediatric Anxiety: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Anxiety disorders are prevalent in children, adolescents, and young adults. As many youth either do not receive adequate intervention or do not achieve remission, prevention of anxiety disorders is a public health priority. Sleep problems are a modifiable risk factor that precedes anxiety. This systematic review includes recent pediatric sleep interventions and anxiety outcomes, and introduces anxiety sensitivity as an understudied mechanism. RECENT FINDINGS: In 21 intervention and experimental studies, sleep intervention reduced anxiety symptoms/disorders and the onset of

Intensive treatments for children and adolescents with anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders have a significant negative impact on youth. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is recommended and established as effective first-step treatment, but persistent symptoms and non-response are common. Intensive psychological treatments deliver more or longer sessions over a shorter time span, with fewer session gaps. However, an understanding of their effectiveness, characteristics, acceptability, and feasibility is lacking. Systematically searching five databases yielded four controlled and 36 uncontrolled studies (N=2707) involving youth with primary

A phenomenological comparison of auditory hallucinations between borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) with auditory hallucinations (AHs) may inadvertently be misdiagnosed with a primary psychotic disorder, such as schizophrenia (SZ). This misidentification can lead to challenges in providing effective psychological treatment. This review therefore aims to identify the phenomenological characteristics of AHs in BPD in comparison to SZ, as well as psychological interventions that explicitly target AHs in BPD. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to summarise the existing evidence base regarding the phenomenological similarities and differen

Peritraumatic dissociation and posttraumatic stress symptoms: the moderating role of perceived threat.

Background: Although peritraumatic dissociation (PD) is viewed as a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prospective studies taking into account other well-known risk factors for PTSD have been scarce, and the exploration of potential moderators within the relations between PD and PTSD has been lacking. Objective: Filling this gap, this prospective study explored the moderating role of perceived threat within the relations between PD and PTSD, above and beyond age, gender, education, and early trauma-related symptoms.Method: A convenience sample of 200 Israeli civilians filled

Gene-environment pathways to cognitive intelligence and psychotic-like experiences in children.

In children, psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are related to risk of psychosis, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. Maladaptive cognitive functioning, influenced by genetic and environmental factors, is hypothesized to mediate the relationship between these factors and childhood PLEs. Using large-scale longitudinal data, we tested the relationships of genetic and environmental factors (such as familial and neighborhood environment) with cognitive intelligence and their relationships with current and future PLEs in children. We leveraged large-scale multimodal data of 6,602 children fro

Bipolar Camouflage: A Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome Case Report.

The cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome is a neuropsychiatric syndrome composed of affective (anxiety, depression, euphoria, and emotional lability) and cognitive symptoms (executive, attentional, and visuospatial deficits) that was described in the 1990s. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman with a history of an acute neurological episode at the age of 28, after which she reported a change in personality, brief and alternating periods of depression, hypomania, and mixed episodes, and cognitive impairment that had a major impact on her personal and occupational level of functioning.

The Difficulties of Grandiose Delusions: Harms, Challenges, and Implications for Treatment Engagement.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Grandiose delusions may entail difficult responsibilities and detrimental actions for patients. Recognition of these consequences by patients may provide an avenue for engagement in treatment. Furthermore, when patients carry out actions within the delusional system ("immersion behaviors") or spend considerable time thinking about their grandiose beliefs this may contribute to the persistence of the grandiosity and further harmful consequences. We, therefore, investigated grandiose-related subjective harm, immersion behaviors, and perseverative thinking. STUDY DESIG

A review of the cognitive impact of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric associated copy number variants.

The heritability of intelligence or general cognitive ability is estimated at 41% and 66% in children and adults respectively. Many rare copy number variants are associated with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions (ND-CNV), including schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders, and may contribute to the observed variability in cognitive ability. Here, we reviewed studies of intelligence quotient or cognitive function in ND-CNV carriers, from both general population and clinical cohorts, to understand the cognitive impact of ND-CNV in both contexts and identify potential genotype

Huntington disease-like 2: insight into neurodegeneration from an African disease.

Huntington disease (HD)-like 2 (HDL2) is a rare genetic disease caused by an expanded trinucleotide repeat in the JPH3 gene (encoding junctophilin 3) that shows remarkable clinical similarity to HD. To date, HDL2 has been reported only in patients with definite or probable African ancestry. A single haplotype background is shared by patients with HDL2 from different populations, supporting a common African origin for the expansion mutation. Nevertheless, outside South Africa, reports of patients with HDL2 in Africa are scarce, probably owing to limited clinical services across the continent. S
