Denis Burkitt's was a remarkable career. A surgeon in the Colonial Medical Service in Uganda, his keen observation of the incidence of jaw tumours in children led him to describe a new form of lymphatic cancer. He confirmed, for the first time in man, that a cancer was caused by a virus and, most remarkable of all, he discovered a cure--low-dose chemotherapy. The condition was named after him--Burkitt's lymphoma--and with this came membership of a select group of eponymous Irishmen, including Graves, Colles and Corrigan. His ability to link the incidence of disease with geographical distributi

Listeriosis is a disease found in most animal species but is relatively uncommon in fish. We studied the relationship between Listeria and zebrafish by injecting Brachydanio rerio intraperitoneally with different Listeria strains having pathological or food-stuff origins. We then compared these results with those obtained in Swiss mice. Experimental Listeriosis in Zebrafish differs greatly from that observed in mice. The 50% lethal dose (LD50) previously determined was much higher than that observed in mice. In fish, a good correlation exists between infection found in renal tissue, an importa

Cockroaches are inhabitant of sewers and frequent visitors of kitchen and stores in the night to feed on left over. It is liable to disseminate a number of pathogens by contaminating kitchen surface, feeding vessels and food items left open. Salmonella paratyphi B var Java a common pathogen of man and animal was used in the study to evaluate its survival and excretion in cockroaches. The host when fed on semisolid feed containing 1 x 10(7) CFU of S. paratyphi B var Java g-1, it was found that the pathogen was eliminated earlier from the live than euthanized cockroaches.

Four brands of commercially available powder denture adhesives were tested for microbial contamination. Sterile Petri plates that contained either brain-heart infusion (BHI) or Sabouraud's (SAB) agar were inoculated with 0.5 gm samples of each adhesive. The BHI plates were incubated aerobically and anaerobically at 35 degrees C and the SAB plates aerobically at 30 degrees C for 2 weeks. The sterility of these procedures was confirmed by incubating uninoculated control plates. All bottles of powder denture adhesive tested contained microorganisms. Both bacterial and fungal growth were noted. Th

Carboplatin is well suited to dose escalation because its major dose-limiting toxicity is myelosuppression when given in 1,200 mg/m2 doses without marrow support. Repeated 800 mg/m2 doses can be given in an investigational setting. With autologous bone marrow rescue the maximum tolerated single-agent dose is approximately 1.8 to 2 g/m2, with dose-limiting toxicities being hepatitis, renal dysfunction, and ototoxicity. Combinations of carboplatin with other agents plus bone marrow rescue are now being investigated in germ cell tumors, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and small cell lung cancer. H

The basis for a rational diagnostic work-up of urinary tract infections is a detailed history and a maximally standardised examination of the urine, with test strips measuring, measurement of specific density, microscopic examination of the sediment, and determination of the bacterial count in the urine employing dipstick procedures are recommended for use in the doctor's office. Isolation and identification of pathogens and the preparation of an antibiogram require a special knowledge of microbiological techniques. A requirement for the evaluation of the urine and its constituents is a knowle

A 45-year-old man with right hypochondralgia and marked leukocytosis was found to have Borrmann type II carcinoma of the sigmoid colon and its metastasis to the liver. The peripheral leukocyte count gradually increased up to 150 X 10(3)/mm3 according to the tumor enlargement. The patient died of hepatic insufficiency, and autopsy revealed carcinoid of the colon and its metastasis to the liver. Leukemoid reaction has been reported in various kinds of malignancies. However, the present case seems to be of particular interest because of the rare association with carcinoid and marked leukocytosis

The mechanism of neutropenia was studied in 6 patients with pernicious anemia. While the peripheral blood of these patients disclosed neutropenia, the number of myeloid committed stem cells in the bone marrow was increased when compared with values obtained from 15 patients with undisturbed granulopoiesis. In 2 of 3 patients investigated, the number of circulating stem cells was also elevated. In 2 patients the number of stem cells was monitored during treatment with vitamin B12: A rapid decline of stem cells was observed, which was followed by an increase in mature granulocytes. These studies

The establishment of international sanitary institutions, which took place in the context of rivalry among the great European powers and their colonial expansion in Asia, allowed for the development of administrative systems of international epidemiological surveillance as a response to the cholera epidemics at the end of the nineteenth century. In this note, I reflect on how a historical analysis of the inception of international epidemiological surveillance and pandemic management helps us to understand what is happening in the COVID-19 pandemic today.

We report on a 77-year-old male patient with neutropenic fever as a result of a newly diagnosed agranulocytosis. The patient was taking metamizole, which is a well known cause of agranulocytosis. The diagnosis of metamizole-induced agranulocytosis as an underestimated side-effect of metamizole could be confirmed by a bone marrow biopsy. The bone marrow and the blood count recovered completely after stopping the therapy with metamizole and administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF).

People in colonial New York adopted inoculation for smallpox as quickly and as thoroughly as did people anywhere in the British Atlantic world. Such adoption was not dependent upon the authority of formal medicine, but rather upon everyday epistemology. Inoculation became accepted as local knowledge because ordinary New Yorkers integrated it imaginatively into common ideas about the body and disease, reconceptualized its theological meaning, and incorporated it into familiar social relations of healing.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis was found in a small cluster of cases in Tejuçuoca, Ceará, Brazil. Tests were carried out to determine its phenotypic characteristics: colony morphology on Ashdown agar and MacConkey agar, biochemical profile in conventional biochemical tests and API 20NE, arabinose assimilation and susceptibility testing by disk diffusion, comparing with data in the literature. This study confirms the presence of B. pseudomallei in Brazil and describes its characteristics.

Four mutants of the Sporothrix schenckii lung isolate IFM 41598 were isolated by their inability to form colonies on a Sabouraud glucose agar plate incubated at 37 degrees C for 4 days. In contrast to the parent IFM 41598, these thermo-intolerant mutants were all defective in producing fatal visceral infections in mice, even though they retained infectivity in footpad tissues with a small fungal inoculum (approximately equals 10 cfu).

Two patients diagnosed as Behçet's disease (BD) were found to be neutropenic. Chronic benign neutropenia commonly presents with symptoms that mimic BD. Here, it is important to decide whether neutropenia is a complication of BD or if the symptoms should be attributed to neutropenia. In our patients, symptoms improved after the treatment of neutropenia with granulocyte colony stimulating factor. Both patients had high antistreptolysin O titers denoting a recent streptococcal infection.

Thrombosis of the internal jugular and subclavian vein is often caused by central venous catheters. We report on a 39-year-old patient suffering from clinically suspected thrombosis of the internal jugular and subclavian veins. Thrombosis was confirmed by B-mode-sonography. The development of thrombosis in this case as a consequence of a central venous catheter and of an additional continuous i.v. treatment with human granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is discussed.

Four adolescents with polycythaemia are described where symptoms typical of the disease had already existed in childhood. Three patients fulfilled the criteria of a polycythaemia vera. In one female patient the possibility of familial erythrocytosis is discussed. Polycythaemia vera mononuclear cells formed erythroid colonies in cultures in the absence of erythropoietin. The patients were phlebotomized to maintain haematocrit readings of 40 to 45%. No case has yet progressed to myeloid metaplasia or acute leukaemia.
